what's the white tube sticking out the top?

I'm not entirely sure. Something to do with lighting in TS. It isn't part of the model itself.

I've made two variants. I'm going to put them on my SAAB carrier, and perhaps try and bribe the Homeworld people with my uberised version (though probably their engine won't handle it...)

The white thing is the universal light that Truespace likes to plop right in the middle of the model (looks like the Truespace5.1 infinite light, but I can't be 100% sure of that).  Rendering the scene will take that out of there, or you can adjust the display properties to not display lights.  Either way, please learn to get it out of there :p

One question: should the turret be hollow?  I know most modern ones have some kind of covering over the slots where the barrels rotate vertically, and in the vacuum of space I'd think it would be all the more important.  And the slots shouldn't extend past the maximum vertical elevation of the guns; if the target moves behind it the whole turret will turn around.  Nice work though.

Rightmouse click on the lights and a little box with a slider will pop up. Pull it to the bottom and that light will put out no actual light.

Cool......the turret base looks like a Hermes escape pod:D

It's basically a big armoured shell covering the gun mounting. I made the slots go 180 across on the basis that FS turret barrels will do that yesno? I'm sure they can move in both directions from the horizontal...

Click on File --> Display Properties

When the window pops up, there'll be a button with a light, click and hold it to find the pic with a red x over the light (I think, it's pretty obvious if it isn't how I described it)

You can also choose the default texture size for OGL and DX display modes, so things look nicer. And you can lose the ugly grid too. :D

no. If the turret is tracking something flying over it, the barrels will tilt up to a vertical position, then the entire assembly will rotate 180 degrees, then the barrels will track down again. So you only need the slots going halfway across.

Nifty turret, though. I would suggest printing something on the side, though; I dunno, something bold and simple like GT01 or T-7B. Making a seperate texture for each turret, so you can see which gun mount is which even outside of FRED, would be innovative and extremely cool. ;)

Glad we're seeing more detailed turrets; it adds a lot to the game.

Right, I'll give it an edit later. The extra texture idea is good, but the UEF carrier is at its tex limit already... I'll have to shop some of the lower LOD texes. Oh, if the Homeworld people ask, I didn't just say that - right?

Teh new and improved!

This one's a machine gun variant for air defense. It took me ages but I cut all those slots in to the barrels (well, I did it once then duplicated it :D). Do you lot reckon I ought to take the blur out of the number on the side? Looks a bit... naff to me

Have you tried rendering the scene?  Truespace3 is notorious for using low-res textures as stand-ins in the active windows, simply because the rendering algorithm is so horribly inefficient.  Rendering the scene might clear it up completely.

TS 5.1 sir! I may not be any good with these programs but that doesn't mean I won't shell out 500 dollars!

You... paid? :ha:
Title: Yay!
Post by: StratComm on November 15, 2003, 06:01:38 pm
hmm, then you either need higher resolution textures or some serious fiddling with the settings.  The low res throughout looks far too cheap, IMHO.  And although I see now that you do have TS5.1, looking at the bounding box, it's doing a visual render as though it was TS3.

It's either OGL or DX mode. I told him how he could up the size of the texture maps being used for these displays.

Unless he's actually using a 128x128 map, or smaller... :doubt:

:wtf: Yes that's right, I paid hundreds of dollars for a program I can barely use. I'm that stupid.

(anyone who puts that in a sig is in trouble)

Anyway, my texture resolution thingy is set at 512 at the mo. The map in the previous pic was only 64x64, see. Since it's caused such a kerfuffle, here's the new super duper crispy hi-res version:

Tell that to the SAAB for Homeworld people, if you're feeling brave. They actually look pretty damn hot in-game. I think it was Blackie that PM'ed me a while back to compliment the textures...

That's quite a nice turret DG.

As for paying for TS5.1 it kind of gives you a real incentive to get better doesn't it :D

Those are the uber turrents I've been lookng for!

Now just make vesions of it with 1 and 2 barrels! I take it that grey rectangle on top is for the number texture?

For a numbering system we can do somethig like gtn01.pcx (meaning gun turrent number) to gtn??.pcx ect...

DG would you mind other people placing that sexy piece of work on some models I have that need guns? As for the 2 and 1 barrel version I think they should be a tiny bit smaller, size and power are relative like the 2 barrel version should be around 3/4 the size of the 3 barrel, and the 1 barrel should half the size of the 3 barrel. Sound good?

I am soo stoked! I watched my Cosmo Warrior Zero DVD's last week and it made me beg for more... Here are some screenshots of the movie ships. Maybe you like their turrents?

Old style Patrol vessel with 3 man guns, and one front missile battery. http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-3-4-1072432736?m=0&pg=4&ro=2&co=3

Automated Patrol vessel (robots) http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-3-5-1073688002?m=0&pg=4&ro=2&co=4

Two types of pirate vessels (yes Death Shadow shows up later!)http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-4-1-1073687971?m=0&pg=4&ro=3&co=0

Pirate main guns http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-4-2-1073688150?m=0&pg=4&ro=3&co=1

Pirate secondary guns http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-4-3-1073688179?m=0&pg=4&ro=3&co=2

One of the most beautiful anime ships I have ever seen the space battleship Kariyu!!! (pronunced Kaa-Ree-you, and it is more a carrier than just a battleship cause it is twice as big as the argo almost...http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-4-4-1073688255?m=0&pg=4&ro=3&co=3

Kariyu firing one it it's 4 front main guns! http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-4-5-1073688285?m=0&pg=4&ro=3&co=4

Secondary gun turrent banks and side missile tubes! http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-5-1-1073688320?m=0&pg=4&ro=4&co=0

Weapon of last resort, teh Saint Elmo's Fire. Next generation of wave motion gun, the Saint Elmo's creates a positive and negative reaction charge from it's fusion engines. It fires both beams at the same time with them intertwine and combine into an anti-matter beam disintergrating the target (or something like that! http://photo.starblvd.net/Star_Dragon/5-5-2-1073688357?m=0&pg=4&ro=4&co=1

I hope this inspires someone named DG,

Well, sure thing is, Matsumoto has always been much more inspired creating starships than characters :)
But whatever ship you'll do, nothing can be the most beautiful ship ever, the Arcadia:

That's the one grief I have against Matsumoto:
he doesn't give a damn about consistancy. The Death Shadow featured in Zero is the first version of the Arcadia, as depicted in the first harlock series. In the second harlock series, the Arcadia is the ship I posted above, while the death Shadow ( yes, it appears in that series, and was the ship Harlock was supposed to have commanded before turning into a pirate... ) looked that way:

Right on!

I remember that ship , it was very dark and hard to see but yeah that's the one he crash landed into the Earth spacce port to mess with the Ilmedes and totally wreck his ship to deprive them of it and carve up as much as the runway as possible to piss them off! That was so freaking ballsy...

"yeah I'll surrender, LIKE THIS!" CRASH! hehehe... Loved that guy ever since... Believe it was Vengence of the Space Pirate

MY main gripe was they needed to shoot that black bird in the head after the third chorus of "Brother Zol, come back to Tocarga!" Sweet Jesu! It nearly drove me insane!!! ;7

Have you modeled THAT version ? Not the Arcadia, but the TRUE DeathShadow...
Title: Yay!

Nah, only made the arcadia. Well, the death shadow isn't really a modelling challenge, you gotta admit :p
