Switch to MSN Messanger?

Nope. They are different products completely. I certainly didn't go to that. It's about the only major IM protocol I don't have :D

XP? Then do this:

Start-->Run-->services.msc

Scroll down to "messenger" and disable it. You can go through the whole list and turn off all the crap you don't use that windows runs in the background. :)

Quite true, although be careful what you disable - some stuff in there _need_ to run. :)

What gets me is does anyone actually buy something to stop spam from a company that sent you spam in the first place?

What's next? Ambulance chasing lawyers running people over so that they can join forces and sue the lawyers motor insurance company?

I haven't even looked at the page :p I didn't suggest buying anything... lol Especially not such a piece of crap.

Say, do you have a list of what does what (and what can be disabled)? I have a long list of stuff but don't want to tinker incase I accidentally screw it up.

there are descriptions and needs in properties

Post by: Fineus on November 14, 2003, 08:25:55 am
True, but I cant be sure that turning it off is a good idea based on those alone...

There's a lot of stuff that you can get rid of just from the description - a lot of the network and comms stuff is just eating up resources. If you go into the properties of each thing, you can view it's dependencies (what it relies on, what relies on it) and make a judgement as to whether you need it or not. You can always try just stopping something (rather than disabling it) to see what happens, and restart if it screws something up. :)

What I do is: If I don't know what it is but it sounds vital, then I leave it alone! You can probably find a list of stuff somewhere, but I'm not sure myself.

well as said the start->run->services.msc is an easy way to do it, it actually blocks all "netsend" messages sent at you :p
I'm sure probably one of you here has been to a lan party and been flooded with netsend messages (quite easy to flood with it :P) doing that will block that from happening, but you can still use netsend to send out ;7

You should get to know Win2k and XP better. Especially learn the services.

For you beginners out there (read: Ashrak) there's one good guide for services tweaking.
http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm

With that guide you should be able to get rid of useless services. Advantages? Less security holes, more memory available for other processes and Win starts up faster.

Best, and most permanent, is to just uninstall the bastard.  It's in the Add/Remove Program dialog under the Windows Components Tab.

Micro$oft left it turned on by default so their corpaorate Sysadmins and Netadmins could use it to comunicate with all the connected computers at once.

Nice wallpaper, BTW.

no! the simple and esiest way of getting rid of it is to disable it not unilstall it. Go to Control Panel --> Administrative Tools --> Services
and find the Messanger service. Disable it.
It will never run on your machine again unless you turn it back on....

What if you disable it, then uninstall it? Then it won't run, and hopefully that disabled value will be saved in case you mistakingly install it again.:D

A friend of mine (a great PC expert by the way) sent me a list of all the apps and services that should be turned on and which should be tuned off. I can upload it somewhere. Belive me...it's awesome. Plus it saves a lot of RAM when you shut down some services. Belive it or not, Win XP can run with only 8 active services.
Oh and by the way...if you don't have any Anti Virus or Firewall software installed, you must do it immediatley.

Actually you can't uninstall messenger simply from Add/Remove programs. It will just remove all default shortcuts to Messenger, the program will remain.

And I can't believe, people are using an OS they don't even know well. Oh well, I guess it's not possible for everyone to have same curiosity in hardware and operating systems as I do.

I kept on getting messages with the heading "From Fat_Guy to Skinny_Guy" or something like that before I killed the service. However, my free ZoneAlarm firewall has been hit nearly 10k times since I installed it, which I feel is a bad thing....

Most of the hits are registered as using the ICMP protocol, with a few TCPs thrown in.
