Which should help with gameplay and graphics.

Just stick two lights on the front on a fighter. They could be turned on or off. They would pretty much be like lasers in the way that they light up things that they get close to, only they always stay on your ship instead of shooting off.
Think about it. It could illuminate dark ship sides facing away from the sun, so low ambient lighting would be more playable. And it would just look cool.

Eh... I think there's a type of glowpoint that can do this. It looks like a searchlight.
-
yes and synchronize that with "L" for hud light. "L" on = lights on, "L" off = lights off...
Like that, it'd make sense
oh, and make it semi-opaque in full nebulas.
-
this would be very nice for some specialty asteroid mining pods, and perhaps some SOC fighters and stuff. but how would the AI use it's headlights?
-
turned on/off in FRED, and switchable by a SEXP
-
cool.
i would love to see this, we could then combine it with a large hollow asteroid with some openings. outside, your lights would stick out so that the enemey could see you, inside, you'd need them not to fly into the walls.

I like that. Gets over the huge pain of having everything black with the shadows in HT&L, too. :D
-
Do it. Now. :D

Now tell us how to use it. ;7

I remember they were supposed to have head lights in Freelancer, but they didn't. Of course there were a lot of things that were supposed to be in Freelancer that weren't

no glow point casts lights
and this would be hugely system draining like you wouldn't beleve
-
why? is it a huge system drain when you fire a laser?
-
yes it is, but you only have it on one or two ships so you don't realy see it. and spot lights are way far way lot whole lot much more (get the point yet) expensive than all other types of lights put together. and our light management system isn't designed for them, and we'd have to make suport for it in FS's light management code, and the old software T&L system,
alowing every fighter in the game to have a consistant spot light able to turn on when ever they want, it makes me dizzy just thinking about it, our light managment code should be able to handel as much lighting as you want to through at it, but it would probly cut the framerates down to about 1/4th what it is now, as many many ships would have to invoke the multi-pass lighting method wich currently is rarly called into action largely becase it's slow.

Ohhh, ouch. If there's no other way, maybe not then.

not to be a spoil sport or anything

Nah, it's OK. We need you guys to give us dreamers reality checks. :)
