Title: New Comp - What do I need to do for the SCP
Post by: Black Wolf on November 17, 2003, 10:29:23 am
Right. I'm getting a pretty much new computer tomorrow, primarily so I can play FSO. This will be my new(ish) kit.

 - 2000+ Athlon XP
 - 512 Meg DDR Ram
 - G-Force 2 (Integrated, so it's sapping 32 megs of ram)
 - Win XP SP1

OK. Now, I've been following the development of the SCP, but I'm a total newb to setting it up and such like, so I'd really like to hear any advice ror special tweaks I'm going to need to get a decent FSO version running. A good (stable) build recomendation'd be nice too.

I'd stick with XP if you want to play some older games. As far as I know, 2k has no compatibility (spelling?) mode (I think there is a specific problem with FS aswell, just can't remember what).

you mean the ugly Luna, or the somewhat better classic?

the first thing i did on this XP Home (don't ask) laptop was off Luna.

Glad I'm not running the XP theme!

As for the computer setup, everything except the Graphics card WILL work with SCP. The Graphics card will as well, but doesn't support HT&L if I remember correctly?

Nope. FS2 runs perfect on 2k. No problems at all. Ditch XP, it's crappah, and sheetah at the same time.

GeForces are a burnout waiting to happen their design produces too much heat for them to be stable

not to mention their rendering pipelines is inferior in capability and video quality - their only 'feature' is a higher framerate in some cases, caused by slashing rendering quality, and overclocking their cards directly in their own drivers.

Number of ATI/ATI-based video cards i've seen burn out (EVER - that's around 1993 to present) One[/i]

Number of nVidia-based video cards i've seen burn out in the last three years: around fourty

not to mention XP thinks it knows better than you about driver versions, and a million ohter things

and it's the biggest spyware laden monopoly-lock-attempting piece of horse **** i've seen in a while

I cannot wait until FS2Open works in linux with full capabilities - i can switch completely over (*grins* i am developing FS Dev Studio as a cross platform app)

Ugh. Hardware thread. First off, you all have to realize - I'm not a techie person. I use computers, but I don't really understand an awful lot about what makes them tick. So most of these claims and counterclaims mean nothing to me. However, I'm sure you're all enjoying your arguments, so don't let me stop you :)

Second of all, this is the system I'll have to work with for the next several years. Depending on the availability of money, I may be upgrading the video card, or adding more Ram within a month or twelve, but this is all determined on the availability of cash. As it is, the money for all the gear I bought to upgrade came from either my brother or my parents, and has to be paid back before I even consider an upgrade. So yeah. This is what I have to work with. So, apart from upgrading, or changing OSes, is there anything I should do apart from download the various exes and VPs to get the optimum performance out of the SCP, on this hardware?

I had a broken mother board. :p  The slot broke on the first move from NY to FL.  But the card fit, somehow during the night it shifted... Sucks, too, cuz the card was sweet.

Well, the only changes I'd suggest as I said before is that the Graphics Card might need changing to fully take advantage of the SCP, though you will be able to play SCP on it for 6-12 months it takes to upgrade if needed.
Memory is ok, though Freespace is a thirsty game, it wouldn't hurt to throw an extra 256Mb+ in there at some point, but the computer will function adequately without it.
The only other major concern is Hard Drive Space, make sure you've got around 80Gig+ if possible, especially if you are running XP, which I do, and it runs Freespace fine, regardless of any other faults it may have.

more memory would be good, but I would still say getting a better video card should be your top priority

For whoever is performing any upkeep (or planned upkeep) of the SCP home page, it might be a good idea to display a listing of minimum system requirements for all features, as well as a recommended system specs for full enjoyment.  Or perhaps, when it comes to which video card you recommend, have a grid that displays chipsets along the top, features along the left, and a rating like, unsupported, partial functionality, fully supported, etc.  Obviously, these specs would need to be updated from time to time to include new features in FSO, and new hardware becoming available.  Just an idea.

Later!
