Title: Cruiser WIP
Post by: mikhael on November 17, 2003, 10:10:24 pm
Its a crappy cruiser WIP. I don't know if I like it enough to finish it. Comments and ideas greatly appreciated.

Sorry, no lvlshot. I couldn't figure out how to make the damn thing work and I'm too tired to screw with it.

eh, it is prety crapy...
maybe more detail on the top, it doesn't look like a cruser, looks more like a good base for a gunship, not as good as the mjol

Truthfully, Bob, I don't know what it is. Just something either large or very small.

This isn't meant to be like the Mjolnir. That took over a week to get the high poly model done. Turning that into an SCP model was never even planned. It just sort of happened.

This is more like what happens when I have a concept I like and see what comes from it. In this case, its pretty crappy. I might just ditch it and  go back to work on some other stuff.

well it does have good points I do like the front of it, it's just it's like a bunch of decent ideas and a hand full of good ones glued together poorly, you would not beleve how many of these things I have on my HD

I happen to like it very much. If you should decide to finish it, I have use for just such a design. Not Terran, Vasudan, or Shivan though.

it's not completely bad, and I also appreciate when someone study the shape so that some specific parts have a defined function.
I also like some parts of the design (the nose for example, very matsumoto style) but the overall feeling I have is "nice but simple" (and I'm not talking about the amount of details)
Some suggestions (that may cause the ship to look worse obviously, they are just things that you can try and then check if you like the result):
1-you can try to make the bridge asymmetrical, placing it not in the middle but, for example, on the left (almost over the tube on the left). I mean like a naval carrier: if the hole under the bridge is an hangar, when texturing you could make a small section of the dorsal polys like a runway (and you could also add it as a model detail)
2-from the side view, the ship seems a bit fat in the middle. You may try to increase the lenght of the middle section.
A radical solution could also be to erase the middel section and connect the front and the rear with a thin struct, maybe some tubes, or something else. The result would be to have the ship like if built by 2 separated parts (do you remember the film event horizon?).
Another solution could be to work on the rear ventral section, making it very  thin, so that the middle ventral section will be in diagonal
3- probably it's stupid but it could be nice to have top/down asymmetric engines

Officer: "Colonel? You'd better take a look at this radar..."
Colonel: "What is it son?"
Officer: "I don't know Sir. But it looks like a giant.."
Pilot: "Dick?"
Dick: "Yeah?"
Pilot: "Take a look out of starboard"
Dick: "Oh my God! It looks like a huge..."
Bird watcher: "Pecker!"
Bird watcher 2: "Oh where?"
Bird watcher: "Wait! That's not a woodpecker. It looks like someone's..."
Drill instructor: "Privates! We have reports of an unidentified flying object. It is a long, smooth shaft complete with..."
Back stop: "Two balls! What is that? That looks just like an enormous..."
Teacher: "Wang! Pay attention!"
Wang: "I was distracted by that enormous flying..."
Musician: "Willie?"
Willie Nelson: "Hm?"
Musician: "What's that?"
Willie Nelson: "Well, it looks like a giant..."
Colonel: "Johnson?"
Johnson: "Yes sir?"
Colonel: "Get on the horn to British Intelligence and let them know about this."

I like the design. It has potential.
My suggestions:
1. Make it longer - it would make a great corvette or destroyer
2. make the engine things longer( more extruded towards the front)
3. You could try adding a micro-bridge on the front section
4. What KARMA said under 2)

EDIT: Nice one IP!

That's one cool model. It reminds me of the Murphy class destroyers from Wing Commander Secret Ops. Perhaps that's why I like it to begin with;)

Cool, if a bit Homeworld-ish. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing, mind you.

You are aware of the torrent of jokes about the shape of your penis you're opening yourself upto if you continue down this line aren't you IP? :D

Not to mention the danger of a custom title :D

It's cool.:)

Make the main hull and engines longer [about 35%-40% for main hull and 25%-30% for engines], and it will look kickass with good textures and good turrets.

It could use more detail, some of those polies would be too big.  otherwise it looks like a capable missile frigate, or possibly a freighter of some sort.

I kinda like the general design... but more detail is always good :)

But of course, it is a WIP yet

Aside from my earlier comments I do actually love the design of this ship. It's well worth finishing and I'm guessing it'll look 10x cooler than it already does once textured.

What would happen if you pulled the engine pod off one side and replaced it with a fighterbay, or a beam cannon, or a tall vertical sensor array, or something else?

For that matter... yeah. Put a big vertical set of antennae on it, then enlarge the front indentation and add some storage tanks on the sides. Make it a gas miner. :)

Eh, I like it. It would serve as a great carrier-class ship, if the port(?) in the front was turned into a fighter bay, one you could fly partway into. Second, I would increase detail on the top of the ship and put a lot of anti-fighter gun turrets on the top and bottom. I would add maybe only one or two anti-fighter beams and only two small anti-ship beams.

I would also add a sensor array (antennas) to the nose of the craft, along that ridge. Lastly, I would add strength to the engine supports, they look a little weak.

Overall, a good design.

Hmm, has potential. My first thought was of this guy:
Destroyer from Starshatter (http://www.starshatter.com/shots/s01.jpg)
