Since I was disgusted with the other design, I started work on another this morning. I have no earthly idea what class it is, what fleet it works with, and I don't much care. Its not a terribly 'Freespace' style design. It does have a fighter launch ramp on the front that leads back to a hanger area inside the ship. Its also got a giant recovery bay on the back beneath the engines.
Here's some pics:

Need to smooth out some of the lines of the main hull so that it flows more evenly.Turrets are probably too big, too.
-
Much better.
Although, it seems like this one should be a cruiser IMO. It just looks small. Probably your turrets like you said.
Would make an excellent Gunboat.

It's a little biased in its firepower isn't it? What, 3 turrets topside to 8 underneath? It looks like an invasion support ship; like something that would hover over a city providing a launch ramp for fighters and pounding ground targets with heavy firepower. The turrets are a bit big IMHO, especially for a ship of that size, and top turret #2 has some line-of-fire issues, but it's a cool mesh. Could we get a couple of shots unturreted to show off the hull?
-
It is indeed nice.
-
-
Holy crap. Its only suppose to have TWO turrets on top. That third one is just kind of floating in space. I must have not been paying attention when I put that up there.
The turrets are big, and can but shrunk down with some effort (mainly involving shrinking the turret bases). I kind of wanted them large though. I don't know why. I might change the upper forward hull and put battleship style turrets there. :D
I like the idea of a planetary assault ship though.
Oh, and LLivingLarge, nice name, but I tend to name my own ships. Thanks anyway. :)
Nonturreted pics coming up.

That is absolutely gorgeous!
One of the most unique designs I've seen in a long time, very well done! Forget the smoothing, leave it boxy, it looks powerful with heavy armour. The only suggestion I would make is to make the turrets smaller, but you are already going to do that.
Very, very nice piece of work! Keep it coming. :D

Does look like a planetary assault ship as the turrets can pound away, and the fighter launch ramp is protected by most of the bottom part of the ship.
I like it.
-
Niiiiice, but fs2 can't handle that many multipart turrets, i think the limit is at 6
-
very very nice. It reminds me somehow a futuristic submarine.
very nice btw

:blah: Is that so? Well that explains why none of them work on the corvette I'm working on. Nads...

You never told me that, Narol. :D
I'll just have to rework it to have only four on the bottom.
-
I like it alot. Props mikhael!
Cheers!

There's a limit on those too? ..... ****. :blah:
-
its 25. or at least i think it is. i could have sworn bumping it from 10
-
It's higher than most people think. The most :V: used was 6. However, the Raynor, as you'll remember Mikhael, has I think 9 or 10 multiparts, and they all worked fine even in standerd FS2. I'd say lose the one that's pointing into the conning tower, but leave the rest. Especially if you use it for an assault ship
Oh, and naked model = cool :yes:
-
Now with smaller, more evenly distributed turrets. Still don't know where I'm going to put beams or AAAF turrets.

Woah, that helped immensely! Not that it was a bad model to begin with, but it looks even better. I like the radar dish in place of the bridge-targeting turret, and it's firepower is distributed in a way now that looks like it would make a good warship.
-
thats SO COOL i think it would be better if it would be a HW2 style corvette :)
-
That ship looks like it could kick A$$ and take names.

You couldn't get this working in HW2, I think. Its close to 4k polygons.
Glad everyone likes it. Should I finish it up and release it for texturers to have fun with?

Didn't the colossus have 10 big 2-part turrets that fire Terran Huge Turret lasers at default?

mik, that thing rules

indeed

ooh pretty. you may want to show that to the guys at the Freespace Upgrade Project

Hell, yes! :nod::yes:
Very nice model - how do you come up with all these great ships? I'm referring in part to some stuff that I can't mention here :D, but that stuff is all amazing too. Respect to you, sir! :)

Ask Trashman. I remember him bumping up against it. If it was changed it was at his request.

Generally, I start with someone else's work, Pyro. Usually, Narol or someone will show me an idea and I'll run with it from there. I'm absolute ****e for starting a model from scratch, generally. Almost all of my best work actually started out as someone else's model. The Raynor is a great example of this. There's also Ryx destroyer model that I tweaked to hell and back. Almost all of the ITN/158th stuff is actually Narol's original ideas with me doing sick things to them.
I keep a directory on my hard drive full of reference pics. Whenever I get stuck for an idea, I go and look at other people's work. I don't ever out and out copy it, but sometimes you can see something that sparks off a new idea for the model you're working on.
-
Um, the Momship in HW2 has nearly 8k polys.

Exactly what I do. Except that I do out and out copy the pics but end up with something different cause I'm not that good a modeller :D
-
I did not know that. Maybe I should load up and examine those meshes sometime. :D I was under the impression that HW2 was similar to HW1 in that it was a low poly popcorn fest.
-
mikhael, is there any chance to have you making some high poly models for the SW conversion?:)
-
Not too terribly likely, Karma. I only have so much time and I really do give most of my work to Narol for the 158th. If there's specific models here or there, I can see what I can do, but I can't make any promises.
Besides, there's lots of higher poly models of Star Wars craft out there by artists far far better skilled than I.
-
I'd still like to see your take on the F/A-38 Mustang. :D
Edit: I canna' spell.
-
well, i just tryed:)
btw, indeed there are many SW models out there, but usually they are not designed to be used in game, and expecially in fs2:)
thanks anyway:)
-
He did offer to do specific models there Karma. There are a lot of specific models that would come in very handy - mostly medium sized starfighter carriers or small Imp ships...
-
the front hull section I think should be smoothed more,
but other than that (well actualy, even includeing that) , looks great
-
BW, actually I'd really, really like someone to do an high poly nebulon-b (as for many other ships), but he also said that he doesn't have much time, and I don't like to "force" others. Whenever he (or any other) will be willing to help us or feel to have enough time to do something, he knows where we are:)
back on topic:
I agree with Bob, but I think he said that he was going to smooth many parts. The engines for example could be more rounded too
-
I chose not to round the engines, because I like the octagaonal look. I might go back and round them anyway, though. I'm seriously considering rebuilding the forward hull from scratch so that I can maintain the smoothness better. Because a lot of the way I work is point and poly tweaking, smooth surfaces get creased, and there's only so much you can do to clean that up without rebuilding the piece from scratch using the finalized shapes.
Karma, the Nebulon-B is one of my favorite models, but I have reservations about working on it (or any other Star Wars model--indeed, most any canonical model for anything): there are certain expectations the audience has about a canon ship, so there's only so far you can tweak it before it becomes something else.
-
Incredible model!
If you're not gonna use that for something, can I have it for my campaign? It's not very Freespacy, which is what I need :D
-
Once I have it LODded and have the debrid done, I will be releasing it under the same terms as I did the Mjolnir: free for public use so long as the resulting POF is released publicly.
-
Excellent quality mikhael, as always :)
