Title: Movies?
Post by: Johnmike on November 23, 2003, 08:08:50 am
Alright, I've been asking a lot of questions lately, but I'm trying to get a grasp on this whole project.  All I have to ask is if the movies are the ones you see in the briefings (not individual mission briefings, the ones where you are addressed by someone like an admiral) or if there are ones that I am missing.  And I don't think I see the intro movie.  Can you tell me when I would see it?

the movies most talked about are the cutscenes, available on the ftp server found in the sticky in gen FS.. the command briefing any's are always played, since they are stored as ani files, that FSO always played, instead of MVE, with all it's copyright stuff.

Uh, it's not playing the cutscences.

ah, do you have the HOTU version? in that case, there are no cutscenes, go to the ftp.
if you have a store bought version, you do have the cutscenes, but FSO can't play them due to it not having an mve decoder, because interplay is very protective about that codec. again, go to the ftp server to get the avi files.

place the avi's in the same dir as the freespace dexe, and enjoy. do note that there are some problems with movie playback in FSO, see the threads somewhere in this forum for details.

Er, I think the problem is that I can't play avi's.  If I download DivX it won't set itself as the default player.  x.x

It doesn't need to. All that is required is the codec itself to be installed, not the player application.

Just run the standard DivX install.
Make sure you have the avi files mentioned above in the fs2 directory, the latest fs open executable, and IIRC there's a modified campaign file that plays the avi's in game. :)

So FS2 Open will -play- it (as in Windows Media Player won't) but I need the codec?

if WMP doesn't then FSO wouldn't

I just got the DivX Codec.  It does, it fact, work.  With WMP.  And FS2 Open.  Also, can you tell me what movies I missed?  Basically the movies that are played up to The King's Gambit.  The one where you destroy four ships trying to run a blockade.

I can't remember which ones you've missed off the top of my head. You can figure it out by looking at the campaign file in FRED (there's a corrected one in my FAQ).

Actually this is something that should go in the FAQ anyway :D
