Hi,
I'm trying to make the "simulated" speech work. I downloaded that executable:
I have downloaded http://mysite.freeserve.com/thomaswhittaker/c_code/freespace/fs2_open_r.rar (http://mysite.freeserve.com/thomaswhittaker/c_code/freespace/fs2_open_r.rar) and the 5.1 MS SDK Voice pack thing...
No matter what I check or uncheck in the launcher, it doesn't work. :sigh:
BTW, I'm using Windows XP.
Any idea or suggestion ?
-
I forgot to write that all 3 voices work in the launcher...
-
same here, nobody had a look at my problem yet, either :)
Problem occurs to Win98 SE, speech installed and works fine in the launcher but in-game it's not there - its NOT in the tech room, NOT in briefings and NOT in-mission.
-edit-
i thought it was a win98 SE specific problem but now... i think it could be soundcard specific. I'm using a SB PCI 128, if that helps :)
-
that one might not have the speech in the preprocessor definitions. Are you sure the that build runs speech?
-
I'm running the latest builds, should work properly. doesn't.
-
Generally non official builds dont get speech compiled in because it requires an SDK that not everyone has, I dont think that one did because it was a test exe I made for something. I will try to find time to compile an exe with support, I'll post a link here if I do.
Nice to see someone knows my speech feature exists.
-
I've updated the exe linked at the top of the thread.
Lightspeed, if it works in the launcher it should work ingame.
E-mail me directly if you still cant get it working.
-
but how to enable it in-game ?
-
it works automatically. if there is no message designated in the mission file then it automatically plays the text. try the tech room. most likly you will here "affectionatly known as the bat..."

email sent, doesn't work (as I suspected). I can listen to it in the launcher and it works (except for the volume slider that doesnt affect the volume), but in-game it's not working at all.
-
with this one it works...
but why isn't this included in the "official" FSO build ?

edit: I apologize I misunderstood the question. they probably don't because not all have the SDK obviously and not all have XP or 2000. I don't think you can get it to work with 95 or 98.

GOT ALL THREE VOICES WORKING!
http://www.bytesoflearning.com/UltraKeyProduct/Installers/Windows/SAPI5/SAPI5VoiceInstaller.msi
-
The new exe is working, nice, thanks RandomTiger !
-
I have the SDK installed. The voices work. The voices won't work in-game. shucks.
-
Lightspeed, did you get the new EXE from the file I linked in the first message of this thread ?
-
The voices should only work if theres not a wav file for that message. Make sure you have ticked the 'ingame' box in the launcher.
If its still not working tell me where in the game it doesnt work.
-
I have the build posted above. There are no voice files attached to the tech room or the personas of the MODs i play currently. The checkboxes are ticked. I can hear the voice in the launcher. I do not hear the voice in the tech room, i do not hear the voice in briefings and last but not least i do not hear it in mission.
-
Hmm... tell me all the values of the speech******* variables in your freespace registry. I'll make you an exe that gives us some more info at the weekend.
-
SpeechBriefings =1
SpeechIngame =1
SpeechTechRoom =1
SpeechVolume =99
-
I can get the first voice to work. I've downloaded the installer that LLL linked to but I still can't see anything in the launcher that let's me choose another voice. How do I do it?
-
I'm not sure how that installer works but if you have 2000 or XP follow the link provided in the launcher (v3.1), that takes you to an installer for extra voices.
karajorma, please e-mail me, I want to discuss that gamma problem.
-
@karajorma - what os are you rinning? Those are the voices that come with windows and if you're running win98 for example, may be there aren't other voices installed. In XP you get 3 of them, in other wins - I don't know...
-
I'm on XP. I'll try the launcher link RT suggested.
-
You get MS Mary, Sam, and Mike. There's also Sample TTS, but it says every word, save for a few, is said 'blah.'

In my experience a fresh install of XP will only give you one voice.
Sample TTS is a sample voice and only comes with enough words to say the phase in the control panel tab.
-
The installer works fine actually. I've just noticed that I wasn't using the latest version of the launcher (which is odd cause I only downloaded a week or so ago).
-
That reminds me, shouldn't the old ones be taken off of http://fs2source.warpcore.org/exes/ and, maybe, latest versions added? :)
Same goes for other files there, there's too much unneeded old stuff.

Is it hurting anything. Is there any forseable consequences to it being posted there? We have plenny of space.
-
Of course there's plenty of space, but it'd be nice if the stuff most people actually *need* (latest stable, latest build (for real), latest launcher and latest media vp) were in a tidier bunch somewhere. You could put the old ones in a separate directory.
The reason I mention this is that I recently reinstalled FS2, hadn't messed with it for a long while and had to redownload all the SCP stuff (HD crash months ago). That got me thinking how a newbie would see things, and frankly, it's a mess. :)

Has much as I hate to talk agains people doing projects like this, they really need to do something about that !
I don't even think the latest launcher is on the web site, and the exe needs it (for registry stuff) !
I mean, it would take what, an hours at most to fix it ?
PS: What up with the Terorist pun, I don't get it... :wtf:
-
Not surprisingly. :-) It's a very old pun (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,346.0.html), and I've kept it because... 1) I can't bother changing it 2) I don't post much anyway 3) if it annoys overly sensitive and politically correct people, then great! I haven't bothered with gaming (least of all cs) for a couple of years now, but I'm going to stick to this tradition.
If I just had a surge of motivation, I would put together some sort of very concentrated primer page to the wiki that would contain clear instructions to get all needed stuff together for playing with fs2_open, but... I guess I'd like to wait for the situation to clear up a bit, like after getting the next stable release and a single media vp with all that is currently ready for it but not yet added. Such notions tend to mean that you never get started though... Besides, I feel I'm a bit out of the very latest stuff myself, so I might not be up to it.
-
Do it. If you make mistakes people will correct them. It's a lot quicker for them to do that than start with a blank page. :)
-
Would it be possible to implement speech in build 12_01_2003 and not only in that specific build version?
-
Did you read the thread?
RT said: Generally non official builds dont get speech compiled in because it requires an SDK that not everyone has
[/size]Whether or not speech is included depends on if the maker of the builds has speech SDK libraries. Some don't, so if you, for example, try out some Bob's graphics thingy testing build, it's a safe bet it doesn't have speech enabled.
I believe RT will keep providing us with them, when he has the time to build them. :)
-
Sorry about that, I must have overlooked it, thanks for clearing it up. :)
-
Besides since it's already 12_02_2003 it looks unlikely :D
-
I still want speech to work on my system :(
The launcher and everything shounds so good, but in game it simply refuses to work.
-
It only worked for me once. Never again...
-
Crap, forgot to make that debug build, I'll get onto that.
Please make sure you've tryed the one at the start of the thread.
If it works in the launcher theres is no reason it shouldnt work ingame (its exactly the same code).
-
Your build works prefectly for me RT, no problems at all. :p
-
OK, heres a new build that has speech compiled in.
You the flag -query_speech and it will give an assement of any problems if it doesnt work.
Post any problems here.
