Okay guys, on January 7, we turn 3 years old. I got this idea a while ago, but I missed our 2nd birthday, so I thought we could try this feather-brained idea in 2004. ;)
Here's the idea. On January 7, we try and break the online users record. Now, to try and get as many people as possible, we should try and co-ordinate our time zones and stuff. This is how we can get all our local times converted to GMT so we can compare and work out what works best.
[q]I am AEDST, which is GMT+11.
When GMT is 12PM, AEDST is 11PM.
I prefer to be online between 6PM and 1AM AEDST, which is between 7AM and 2PM GMT.[/q]
Include any time you can be online - I, for example, can only have my dial-up connected after office hours and into the early morning. If you can be on during the morning times as well, include both morning and night sessions, then convert to GMT.
-
i'll be there ...
amazing, i've been here pretty much since day one
-
Dude, put down your times. :)
-
Well I could hardly miss it could I ;)
I am GMT, which is GMT+0
When GMT is 12PM, GMT is 12PM. (... )
I prefer to be online between 7PM and 3AM GMT, which is between 7PM and 3AM GMT.
However, this is flexible - and since I'm on DSL I don't actually have to be present at my computer for my name to be a part of the record. I can leave my PC on if I am elsewhere.
Groovy
-
i am a litle confused around these timezones but hey i'll be here as allways.
-
Windows has a clock that should explain it - choose where you are on the drop down list (or the time zone that applies to you) and next to it it should say "GMT +X" where X is the time that is added on. So where it's 1AM GMT, and you are GMT+6, it is 7AM where you are at that time. See? :)
-
i am GMT+9:00 hours

I dunno, man. I think you ought to check your numbers there, the math might be wrong. :D
Kal's right there, btw Wind. Put up your times please sir. :)
HIG, include the times you can be online. ;)

same as you man... same as you.. AEDST
-
GMT+1, and i can be on from 17:00 on weekdays and from 10:00 on weekends, both untill 22:00.
please, use 24 hour time, it makes it easier to add GMT stuff, am/pm is confusing.
-
4pm to 2am
but i am check if i am still in Australia then it's same as you

I know, but what times do you mind being online? Exactly the same? :)
I usually use 24hr, kasperl, but I know twice as many people who are confused by 24hr than by 12hr. By all means, add up your numbers in 24hr, then convert back to 12hr.
-
[q]GMT-2 (due to summer time).
When GMT is 12PM, right here it's 10PM.
I'm online from 9AM to 6PM then from 7PM to 1AM, which means from 7AM to 4PM then from 5PM to 23PM in GMT.[/q]
Which means that probably I'll be online anyway.
-
times available: what steak said.

Lol, pull an all-dayer? :D Good on ya. I might try the same. ;)
-

and i can't miss party ;)
and that day would be good idea but my site online
-
hmmm... *considers drawing special b-day thingy for HLP*
-
GMT +1 can be online around 18:00 or 20:00
-
EET, GMT +2
And I'm online... err... most of the time for now :p
So I might be able to be there anytime.
I'll keep this updated if things change
-
January 7th, I'll be there.
I am EST, which is GMT+2.
When GMT is 12PM, AEDST is 02AM.
I am usually online between 7PM and 1AM EST, which is 5PM and 11PM GMT.
However, on Januray 7th, I prefer to be online between 6PM and 3 AM , which is 3PM and 1AM, GMT
-
I am Australian Western Standard Time, which is GMT+8.
When GMT is 12PM, my clock says 8PM.
I prefer to be online between 5 PM and 2AM, which is between 9AM and 6PM GMT.
On the day though, well, if I'm not working or somewhere else I can't leave, I'll be here whenever we decide to have it :) Guaranteed.
-
I'll probably be on anyway! :D
-
I did this on Freespace one time... back in Novemer 2001. we hit over 40 people in a channel at one time... try to beat that nowadays on Freespace...
anyhow, i'll be there :D
-
7AM to 8AM GMT that day. Bloody school.
-
jan 7th is a wednesday, i don't know when the next semester starts
either way im EST (US) which is GMT -5
I prefer to be online between 3PM and 9PM EST, which is between 8PM and 5AM GMT
-
hm... I can be there around 1500 to 1800 GMT, as I am GMT -5... Someone post an anouncement several days prior, to remind everyone...
-
6pm - 11:00pm ish on GMT :)
-
GMT -5 here... but I have cable, so I can be on whenever... It's a Wednesday, eh? I'll see. :)
-
I'm GMT -5, but I can't say when I'll be free that day. First day of classes and all of that, not to mention a home Basketball game the night before.
And this might be easier said than done, we absolutely smashed the previous record last month. But I'm all for trying to do it again :D
-
we should have it on the weekend... preferably saturday
-
I'm in GMT-8, so... when it's 15:54 (like now) it's 23:54 in UTC.
I prefer 17:00-23:00 in my zone, so 1:00-7:00 UTC.
-
Errr, actually I think my clock is adjusted to TAI, so that 23:54 is not accurate for UTC! ;)
-
it's 8- GMT here. So pretty much whenever setekh is on, it's ****ing early in the morning.
Maybe I'll just leave my computer on that day.
-
I'm GMT -6! :D
-
just checking, GMT-5:00 is the east cost of the US right?
-
Yep, yep.
-
By the way, you can just have everyone use Opera for a day and set Opera to refresh the "who's online" every 5 minutes. That'll make it easier to organize. :p
-
I can probably idle through the whole day if I remember to. T'ank you, Cox Communications.
-
I am GMT +1 nad can be around 20.00 and 21.00
-
Blast, won't be back on my dorm connection 'til the following Tuesday...
And assuming I still have an internet connection at home, I'm GMT -5, and can be on pretty much anytime between local-noon and local-'wee hours of the next day,' which translates into anytime after 5PM GMT.
Assuming, of course, I can get online at all. :P
-
I'll be there from 10:30AM to...5PM GMT
-
I'll be there, and I'll be on from around 11am onwards (GMT)
-

doesn't the "Who's Online" automatically refresh itself every few minutes?
-
Indeed it does, Stealth. Anyway, this is good - keep the ball rolling, guys, we're going to need more than this if we want to break the record. ;)
-
I think im going to make a peicewise graph showing when people will be online... to determine the most likely time...
-
Well, I was going to do that when more people had posted, but you're free to give it a stab. :)
-
for me make it any timezone and i'll be sure to be here ;)
-
January 1st - 5th would be cool, 7th looks bad :(
Potential-Online-Times:
Timezone: CET (GMT+1)
Mondays: 7 PM - 10 PM
Tuesdays: depends
Wednesdays: 5 PM - 1 AM <-- this is what the 7th would be, sucks
Thursdays: 2 PM - 1 AM
Fridays: 2 PM - 3 AM
Saturdays: 1 PM - 4 AM
Sundays: 1 PM - 1 AM
January 1st - 5th is still holidays here so that would be perfect :)
Holidays: 24/7 ;)
-
I'll just saunter in at some point, as usual
-
actually 5th would be the best, as lightspeed already suggested. It's weekend so people have more free time.
-
yes, so true. It should be weekend. And 5th means i still have holidays, so even bettar ;)
-
But the 5th... isn't symbolic. :p
Come on, guys, that's less than 50 people. We're not going to break the record with that!
-
make it the 5th and you will have plenty more :)
Oh, and time to start a list who'll be there and who not.
-
7th is just fine because in 5th is weekend and some want do something more than surf in net
-
7th is my first school day after new year. meh.
-
if you can get 60 people to say they'll be there, you'll break the 77 record easily, because there's always a few dozen guests and other members on.
-
oh yeah, right, that.
7th it is.
-
I can be online anytime between 10am-6pm, and possibly 7 or 8pm on through midnight, GMT +2.
-
I still think the weekend woulde be best.
Seketh's prefered times are bang in the middle of the morning, when I'm at work. Between 6 and 10pm (2200) BST are my prefered times
maybe I could book a day off. As good as an excuse as any..
-
hm... guests are counted as online users... someone could just set their IE homepage to the forums, and then logout, and open hundreds of browsers...
-
Anytime, GMT -06:00
-

naaa, wouldn't work. as long as you're still on the same IP, the forums have no way of knowing whether you have one window or 400 windows open
-
I am PST, which is GMT-8.
When GMT is 12PM, AEDST is 4AM.
I prefer to be online between 6PM and 12AM PST, which is between 2AM and 8AM GMT.
I feel so individual-less. Now even my posts are standardized. :p
-
It shouldn't be any later like the 9,10 or 11th as that is the military weekend and users like me have reserve duty... But then again I don't see delaying it.
I am sleeping or at work during the week so if I have Cable and just leave my comp connected is that good enough? ;)
-
Im at GMT-6. I usually like being on from 9-ish to 1 AM, and since its on a saturday I should be on.
-
I am free from 11AM EST (GMT-5) to 4PM and again from 9PM to 4AM for at least the next few months. We need one of those spam threads that grow at like five posts a minute when lots of people are online that day. :D
-
hm... what if everyone set their school/work homepages to the forums? :p
-
That's not the point, really, now is it?
-
Is it? I'm really not sure anymore.
-
Steakman, looks like your times are causing the problems. Keep it on the 7th and move your time where everyone else can get to it. Sorry Steakman, you have to suffer a little or otherwise it looks like a no-show.
So if you board monkeys can make the 7th, post your times... we'll go for the most popular one.
Happy 3rd HLP! :D
I'll make time. Will you? :p
-
16:30..21:30 GMT
-
I'm GMT+1, I'm taking a test (again) on jan 7, so I won't be here that much in person. but I guess I could leave the comp on refreshing the hlp forum main page from about 06.00 GMT (that's in the morning) to whatever time the computer melts down or I decide it's too noisy.
or whatever.
-
Yeah, I figured as much, Impurial. Me thinks I'll be pulling an all-nighter of sorts... them's the breaks being AEST. ;)
-
I think that if you want to gain more attention wouldn't it be a good idea to place it on the home page
GMT8+ I'll be around if necessary :p
-
Ok, I'm Gmt +1.00 (Sarajevo, Skopie, Sofia, Warsaw)
-
I am GMT -08:00. Online time varies, usually here at night though.
-
my computer is almost always on, so i can just leave the browser on the forums, though i'll try to actually be there.
-

Interesting idea. Suppose we create just such a thread, and we ask everyone to make at least one post in it. Then, at the end of the day, we can compare the number of unique posts to the number of people online. :)
-
Or, for something new, we could replace thread with forum, and posts with threads. :drevil:

Or we can ask Shrike to start another Road Trip thread, which has pretty much the same effect.

Actually, that's just what I thought of doing. Come the 7th, I'l post the thread. Or something.
-
that's tomorrow, isn't it. the 7th, i mean.
-
From what I can tell, yeah, we really need to spread the word on this if it's going to work out
-
Indeed...
You know what, if people forget, we'll just let it slide to the weekend. It is a Wednesday, after all. ;)
-
it is? Today is a tuesday for me... of course, i just got banned from the computer for 2.5 years for an F on a progress report... :'( So this'll be the only time im online for a while... :'(
-
that's a while..
-
So...er, yes?
-
No.
-
:(
