Title: extracting models from games.
Post by: Stunaep on November 28, 2003, 12:52:04 pm
I'm working on a rather huge model, which requires lots of low-poly people running around in military uniforms. And I thought, that rather than delving into the complexities of low-poly character modelling (texturing! arggh!), I'll just rip some from games.

Which turned out to be rather more complicated than I expected.

So, give me some names of games and tools, from which I could easily extract models into a commmon format.

You mean games you own or could aquire 'legally' I suppose. AvP2 seems fairly mod freindly, and has absolutely tons of stuff in the data archives. That might be a little posh for your project, mind.

Low poly people? How about... any FPS with any kind of communty site still running since Quake? If you want military uniforms, go Soldier of Fortune, or Sci Fi Military uniforms go JK 1 or summat - there'll be a crapload of models out there.

yeah but Modelview only works for Descent games... he's talking about other (non Descent / non Freespace) games...

I'd guess Doom3 and HL2 have some fairly thievable 3d-people.

I am?

Well, actually, I am. I don't have descent 3.

SoF is actually an excellent idea. Someone point at the modding tools.

They're not very low-poly.

note: When I mean low-poly, I naturally mean, something under the 10 000 poly mark.

Now, someone point me at the most convienient Q3 editing tools.

I-War ships? The ones from the original, real Independence War don't have extraction tools, and they just look pooey anyways, seeing as they're practically from the Stone Age. Ones from the heretical lie that was I-War 2 were well beyond FS's range until recently. Well, most of the cool ones were. And there's really no point in bothering- why port the worse ships to the worse engine, instead of vice versa?

Because seeing a Commonwealth Cruiser getting hit by Beams and then stuffing the GTVA destroyer with its own cannons might be nice ;)

told j00 :p :D

i could tell, because he said extracting models from "games" (plural)... also he wanted people running around, and instead of making his own, he'd "rip them from games".
