How should I know... I'm not a coder.

Hello, im a newbie to these forums, but not to fs2.....
just spent last hour or so browsing thru these forums, you ppl done some amazing stuff here.
downloaded 3.5.5 fs2 open source installed and works fine with launcher. then i found the 32 bit new 3.5.6vp downloaded and installed that.
fs2_open.exe wont let me use the -t32 flag , that the readme356 says to use, comes up with this error :
Error: Unrecogzined command line parameter -32
File:E:\Languages\Visual Studio Projects\Visual C++\fs2_open\code\Cmdline\cmdline.cpp
Line: 540
Call stack:
------------------------------------------------------------------
kernel32.dll 77e814c7()
------------------------------------------------------------------
if anyone knows how to stop it doing that please let me know...
thanks
-
make sure you didn't make a typo.
also, you need one of the latest buids, 355 doesn't feature HT&L
-
he fixed it, look at his other post
-
i see that now too.
-
yeah soz guys forgot bout this one, the d3d 32 bit stuff is very nice :D
will the 32bit eyecandy be implemented in opengl soon? or is it already there?
i tried the hl&t it was very fast but very buggy, but the hl&t ppl know bout the bugs already...
-
HT&L isn't finished in OGL.
HT&L is a WIP, but D3D is far enough done to somewhat work.
-
ht&l isnt THAT buggy anymore... It's playable.
Although theres been massive slowdown on the latest builds. Even HT&L is not really "ubar-fast" anymore. I tried to find out what exactly causes the slowdown, but i didnt manage to find out what the heck the lines commandline was (2 people have posted one, but neither of both works)...
-
Is it normal that the shinemaps don't work in ht&l? I have a feeling some other people have the same problem (Turnsky?)...
-
I think it's not implemented in Radeon cards below the 9600 level, but I may be wrong. I had a 9200, and it didn't work, sadly.
But my GeForce2 does it nicely...
-
They should work fine ... annnnnnddddd
(http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/images/welcome2hlpbb.gif)
-
Depends on his card, you can't just assume it will.
-
Thank you for the welcome :)
And yeah well I have a Radeon 8500 so I guess thats the prob...will have to get a better card soon.
-
if it works without HT&L, it should work with HT&L too...
oh... and if someone who knows spots this thread... I'm still looking for the lines command line :P
and no... "-timebar" does not work.
-
Yeah, maybe its possible to fix then after all?
-
no idea, hopefully some coder will pay this thread a visit... and even more hopefully he can even answer my lines question :p
-

Um... no. Without HT&L, Software is renderring it, and the PC itself is adding the shinemapping. With HT&L it's all on card, and that's where it varies by card... Right?
-
Probably. Also, would reducing the texture file sizes lead to a performance improvement, or are thy stored decompressed on the GFX card memory anyway?
-
Now that I have no idea about... I'm using the extent of my hardware knowledge with that last post I made...
But it'd probably help to have smaller sized, or resolution files, as long as you don't kill the detail.
-
I asked because that might be my performance drain; I have all those neat 32bit TGA files.... (>100 MB) Would it help to convert them to jpg (<20 MB) or wouldnt it make any difference because the graphics card stores the textures in an uncompressed way anyway (>100 MB again) ?
Wheres the coders when you need them :P
-
in hl&t in d3d the main bug that casued it to be unplayable was that the direction of fire of the guns stayed in the same direction all the time, when i moved the mouse to aim elsewhere the guns stay aimed in the one direction...
weird bug...
-
ah got rid of that bug soz, tried diff setting and it worked right...
-
in d3d hl&t mode 1024x768 32bit -t32 -cell and vsync off the fps i got didnt go below 40, most stayed around 70-100.
i have 2500xp barton, nforce2 mobo, 1gb ddr400, geforce4 ti4200 128mb.
btw i think the bug i described relating to hl&t before was in opengl.....
the only probs i can see with it in d3d, are :
the targeting window in bottom left corner of screen, dont look right, not detailed enough, all u see is shape of ship no detailed textures....
in briefing - ship selection bit, the window where it shows u the ship selected, only shows a small part of the ship - and is very pixellated - looks like it just need to be zoomed out lots and lots.
hope this info is useful...
-
do you use all my 32bit stuff?
Also, why do you use cell shading? O.o
On latest builds i get 70 FPS when theres not much happening (i'm v_synced to 70), 56 FPS when theres only minor stuff, 15-35 FPS when theres lots of action.
I used to get steady 70 FPS on HT&L, so something must really drain LOTS of performance.
i-p4 2.4 GHz (800 MHz FSB)
Radeon 9800 128 MB
512 MB RAM (DDR400, dual channeled)
Asus P4C800 Deluxe Mainboard
-
Bugger, if I'm staring at blank space I get 35 fps. If I'm moving through empty space I get 30, and if I'm looking at one decent sized capship, I'm lucky to get about 24fps... It's usually at about 6... And this is in standard mode. 32bit kills my PC.
-
Something in the newer builds is even making the cursor move "slow" in the menus. And I have an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128mb, gig of DDRAM, and a 1.8GHz P4. What is it that's slowing everything down so much?
-
thats why i need that -lines thing... Anyone know the command line? Or even better, anyone knows what the problem is / could be?
Older builds were heaps faster! (especially the buggy HT&L builds -- my FPS NEVER dropped below 70)
-
Exactly.
I thought the -lines thingy was like in a special build or something.
-
no, they said it's implemented in all newer builds
-
Try it in debug builds?
-
doesnt work either. Ive done some tests. Starting a new thread :)
-
Ah, this has some of those new planets; excellent. :D
By the way, those "hi resolution" background nebulas are still in there and probably should be removed, since they look much worse than the standard ones ingame (this has been documented before). I rebuilt the VP without those and it also turns out to cut the size of the file by over half.

This is something I noticed with all of the builds since 3.55, but it does seem to have gotten worse with the 11_18_2003 one.
-
huh? which nebulas that look worse? :wtf:

HT&L is very buggy. How do you explain the crashing to windows with no error message?
-
... which does not happen on my machine :p
-
It happens to me every now and then, but no more so than in the last few builds since 3.55. Same symptoms as that good old targeting crash.
huh? which nebulas that look worse? :wtf:
well, all of them. This was talked about in another thread about a month ago; the excessive blur in them nullifies any effect that increasing the size gives and makes them actually look worse ingame. I would post a screenshot showing the difference but for some reason I can't get a proper IP address, which prevents me from connecting to any FTP servers to upload the images.
It might actually be worth redoing these nebula images from scratch (as is being done with the planets), as they are relatively easy to make.
-
actually youre the first (and only) one who says that :)
someone post some screenshots of scaled nebulae (new & old) and youll see what I mean. They're better. at the same size, they do not have any visible blur.
-
I think I'll add one of my own... to the listing. TS is fairly good for that.
-

I disagree, when I was playing the game I remember thinking that one of the nebulas (Red and purple) seemed blurry. The problem is that it's been enlarged, but no detail added.
Edit:

Both of these are engine problems, and the second thing is a known bug.
-
I find it rather odd that shinemapping doesn't work on Radeon 8500 and 9200's. They are both DX8 compatible.
-
This includes all of LLs stuff, right? And there is nothing else I should have right now to make my FS2 look the best it can? (Minus a new computer)
-
Well, since the VP was released he's made two more planet images, available in this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,19207.0.html) thread, and thruster glows (With Bobboau) in this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,19344.0.html) thread.
-
grumble.... Oh well, it all does look great!
-
I dl'd this, installed and followed the readme. I went and I played the Derelict mission "Bond of Trust". When I would shoot my lasers, they just didn't appear. I could hear the sound effect, and everyonce in a while the shield hit effect, but no bolts of energy. In addition to that, the thruster glows totally disappeared on the Tritons. Did I do something wrong? I was running this at 16 bit, using the software build.
-
You're using 32 bit effects but didn't turn them on. The command line is different depending on the version you are using.
Try -32bit, -t32 or -jpgtga until you find one that sticks.
-
Thanks.
-
Hi All!!!
I'm a newbie here and, well, newbie in mod stuffs too!
So, I wanna ask why in the hell the FS_open 356c do not work in my game!
I tried everything but, it still not work. I instaled the vp in the right place, downloaded the launcher, create a new pilot but, when I choose the campaing and click on the misson door nothing happens.
I read this forum from up to bottom but I didn't found anything that can help me so, I'm here!!!
Thx for any help that u can guys can give me!!!!!:)
-
You don't mention downloading FS2_open. I'm assuming you did that too (still you are a newbie and it's easy to miss that and think the launcher does everything).
If that isn't the problem (and you've tried the advice I gave above about trying the -32bit, -t32 or -jpgtga flags) then I think we'll need some more info.
What happens when you start a mission. Does it just look exactly the same? Does it crash? Do you see anything new at all?
-
Well.....in fact nothing happens! I click on the campaing door and than, nothing. the door open but the mission do not start. It's not crashes... just stay in the same way, unacessable to play the main campaing. But, if I try any canpaing from Lightspeed, it works!

welcome to Hard Light Productions
(http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/forums/images/welcome2hlpbb.gif)
Exits are to the sides and rear, emergency flamethrowers can be found under the seats. And if you run into a large 5-limbed creature while wandering around in the air ducts, give it your lunch. Hopefully it's just Carl, and he'll leave you be.
-
What version of FS2_open are you using?

That's the media vp. I meant the FS2_open exe. You did realise you needed a new exe right? :)
The New launcher needs to be pointed at a new .exe. Check the FS2_open 3.5.5 thread or the new builds thread for a link.

In fact, I didn't! hehehe :)
AS I said, I'm a totally newbie in this mod stuff!
But...i looked for 356c exe and didn't found it.... someone can give me a hand?
-
The .exe doesn't have that name. Have a look for threads with the names I posted above.
EDIT : I'm in a good mood so I'll do it myself.
Get an exe from here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,17284.0.html) (lastest Official Release) or here (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,19016.0.html) (Latest bug testing build - Lots of bugs removed - Lots of new ones added :D )
-
YEah! It's work!
And u guys made a fantastic job!!! (I'd never seem so many bugs in my life :D )
Thx very much for your precious help karajorma!!!
-
No problem. Have a look in the my FAQ if you have any other problems as I may have the answer. :)
-
I have a fs2open_3.5.5
media file 356c
launcher 3.3
when I start game with -32bit I don't see any news, no new ship trials, no shinemaps
when I start with -t32 or -jpgtga game don't want to start
ERROR:unreconized comand line -jpgtga
Kernel32.DLL
What I do wrong??????
-
The problem is that 3.5.5 doesn't have support for 32 bit textures. That is still a beta feature which is supported by any of the exe's from the New Builds thread.
Either remove the media file or get one of the new exe's and things should work fine.
BTW :welcome: I may not have said it before :D
I think I answered this one elsewhere recently. I think we need to mention that the latest media vp isn't compatible with the current offical build :D
-
"Either remove the media file or get one of the new exe's and things should work fine"
what new exe??
I have 2 zip files for 3.5.5
one 2.45 mb
second 6.7 mb
-
Like I said. Have a look in the new builds thread. There are 3 newer builds of FS2_open in there which do support 32 bit textures.
I'm in a good mood so I'll even give you a link (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,19016.0.html)
-
thanks :)
-
more problems: with new builds files that error
ERROR:unreconized comand line -jpgtga
Kernel32.DLL
is no more a problem
but
now when I on the -jpgtga or -cell or pcx32 it shows me new error
something with FS.EXE and game isn't even start
what is wrong?
maybe I forget about some files?
in video I have direct 3D8
my card GeForce 3 Ti 200
-
But it works if you don't use those command lines?
-
Did you remmember to point the Launcher to the correct Executable?
Because you wrote FS.EXE.
That is the stock executable.
In the launcher you will see a button with "browse" on it. Press it, go to where you have installed FS2 and select "fs2_open_r.exe".
Press OK and now try to run it with the command lines.
-
It won't be fs2_open_r for the latest build since that's called fs2_open_12_05_2003_fs2_open_r.exe but I think MLeo may be on the right track there.
-
Your right, fs2_open_r is for 3.5.5 the latest is 12_05_2003_fs2_open_r (release) or 12_05_2003_fs2_open_d (debug).
-
I'll try this.
I press "browse" select 12_05_2003_fs2_open_r
now I have new Error:
strings.tbl is corrupt
and it shows even if I not select -jfgtga od -cell
-
Try the debug version.
That is why it is for.
-
thar same Error + something with kernel.DLL
and in the debug Spew:
DEBUG SPEW: No debug_filter.cfg found, so only general, error, and warning
categories can be shown and no debug_filter.cfg info will be saved.
==========================================================================
Cannot get handle to monochrome driver.
Setting language to English
-
Odd, try 3.5.5.
I just tried the new build and I got a nice green flashing screen.
-
that same error
does it matter that I have a non-english version of freespace?
-
Well try setting the language to English in the Launcher, maybe that will help.
Besides, did you bought the game or did you got it from HOTU or Kazaa (P2P)?
-
If it does not support your language get the HOTU version, and put the extra VPs in from your CD version. That should work fine.
-
I bought the game.
I still don't know why the game don't want to start?
Error:
strings.tbl is corrupt
\visual studio projects\visual C ++\fs2_open\code\localization\localize.cpp
line 556
can enybody tell me what is this?
sometimes it shows error with kernel.dll
-
The strings table error sounds like a language problem to me and the fact that it's complaining about localisation also points in that direction.
I'd suggest going to Fractux's FTP and getting hold of Root_FS2.vp and using that. It should solve the localisation problems.
-
Fractux's FTP???
do you have a link?
-
I knew I was forgetting something!
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,16047.0.html
-
can I get this file from some other sites?
I have a problem with connect to this
-
Almost everyone does.
It's not that anything is actually wrong with the server it's just that a lot of people are trying to do the same thing as you and there are only two connections available.
Hmm. Since root vp is a small file I guess I might as well upload it.
It's compressed with WinRAR (go to http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm if you can't deal with Rar files) and you can find it here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/root_fs2.rar)
-
thanks, maybe now fs_open will work
alleluya it work, it work I don't belive it
thanks for help :)
-
Great. I'll leave the copy of root.vp up for a while but it will vanish when I need the space again so if anyone else wants a copy now's the time to get it.
-
About the rar files, rename the .rar to .exe and it will be the same as an auto extractor.
Just to let you know.
-
Not with this rar. I just tried it and bugger all happened.
-
Works for me. I don't have winrar installed...
