Title: Top 5 Scariest Movies
Post by: Black Wolf on November 30, 2003, 10:06:19 am
Well, after my eighteenth (Go look at the pictures :on the BDay thread if you want) Me and some mates were sitting on the cricket pitch trying to figure out what the five scariest movies we'd ever seen were, so we could rent them for a scarefest sometime soon. Unfortunately, we only got four:

Signs
The Mothman Prophecies
The Ring
The Exorcist

And we need a fifth. If you wanna have a ***** about how we're all a bunch of pussies and some/all of those are crap, well, I can handle that, as long as you provide alternatives that aren't slasher/massacre movies which really don't scare much of anyone above about eleven IMO.

So - scare me.

Careful with Signs - it scared me silly but the vast majority of the yokels round here will rip in to you for it.

Mothman was... odd. The first half was interesting and quite scary, the second half was crushingly dull.

Dude, rent Ring instead. The japanese version scared me ****less. After watching it we went out for a fog walk (it was about three in the morning). I look over my shoulder and suddenly this car was there RIGHT BEHIND US. Nearly shat meself cos I hadn't heard it comming and it had no lights on. Luckily it was just a constable wanting to know what the **** we were up to.

Exorcist - nuff said.

Now, for the fifth... well I like Event Horizon, but I know people have very mixed opinions on that, ranging from uber crap to hella good. And of course there's always Alien, though it's hardly scary by today's standards (still cool though)

The Ring. Both US and Japanese versions are good.

The Silence of the Lambs. Not really a horror movie, but damn good nonetheless

That's about it. No other horror movie has managed to scare me.

Has anyone ever heard of Rose Red? It's a Steven King Movie, it's good, not really scare, but freaky...the back story is interesting, a house that continues to build upon itself (you go in and count how many rooms there are, it could be 97 one day, and 120 the next, it keeps building!!)

I haven't seen The ring yet...probably never will...but oh well

Any Steven King movie gets on the top 5 scariest movies instantly because...well...it's Steven King man!

Donnie Darko isn't scary - it's inspiring. I love it.

Actually I'm not sure what films I do find scary. The Exorcist wasnt - although the bits in the hospital where they run tests on her are pretty disturbing (I hate that kind of thing).

Yeah. This one was actually the primary reason for the inclusion of the "Bunch of Pussies" paragraph. But, for me, Signs was one of the few movies that did everything right - the storyline, the scripting, the performances, the timing and suspence, the sense of reality about the whole thing and of course, the Birthday Party Scene. Well, maybe not the water bit. But apart from that. And yes, I was also scared quite a bit. :shaking:

I recall being fairly freaked the whole way through, though the whole conquering the mothman, and number 37 bit didn't really add an awful lot to the story.

The basis behind each of these choices, and probably one of the reasons there's no number five, was that each of these movies had been seen by all four of us, except for one, and it was a different person each time. The Ring (and by extension, Ring) was mine, so I'm going in with High Expectations and no experience. If The Ring is good, I'll go Ring, but somehow I don;t see my mates willing to rent out a subtitled Japanese movie... hell, I probably wouldn't if I didn't know too much about the movie or I wasn't in it for laughs...

EH is an option, though It's been so long since I've seen it I don't recall whether it waqs scary, or scary-because-I-was-10.

Signs was a good movie, but wasn't the scariest i've seen.  neither was Mothman Prophecies... in fact, Mothman prophecies was one of the most boring movies i've ever seen :-/

Scary movie 1, 2, and 3 scared the crap out of me though ;)

Thing about Signs, it had some holes in it the size of the Watford Gap as Maddox was keen to point out. But it also had some genuinely freaky bits. When Mel looks out of the daughter's bedroom window and you see... something... next to the chiney on the roof of the next building... I got my mate to rewind it and when we realised, we jumped a foot in the air. And the birthday party bit... *shudders*. And when Mel walks in to the indian guy's house and you see a shadow moving back and forth behind the closet door, then he shouts 'hello?' and the shadow stops moving... like I said the story held less water than a sieve, but it was genguinely scary all the same.

Event Horizon is a simialr story. It's not an original concept by any stretch of the imagination, but the effects are the dog's bollocks and it's genuinely creepy
