I've been fiddling with the model and the textures a bit:

Hey, that's good! I think the light gray tile texture, the middle-superstructure one, kinda clashes with all those dark ones, though. I'm too tired to offer suggestions.
-
stop using one big box uv map and start using planner mapping on a per-face basis :p you'll get FAR better results, as well as symetrically tiled ships :p
-
but have been busy. Yeah you go the idea, now the contrast brings out the details that were hiddden by the solid dark grey mass it was before.
I would recommend that any one who has the time while mapping a model make as many areas as possible to take textures instead of just one or two huge general areas. IT makes it possible to add little details via textures that you don't have via th model itself. specially if you are a noob and can't make textures, but have lots to use to add or change around... Tht's what I do I experiment with the look of different textures... Sometimes I spend hours trying to find the right combination that fits what I see the final result as in my head..
-
That tiny bridge really makes it seem big, now get rid of those gargantuan turrets and the ship itself will look gargantuan, that's what the most models are missing, good scale referencepoints.
-
Christ thats a good ship!:D:yes:
Hey, im an Inferno fan, and i was thinking that if you have nothing else planned for it, the Paladin would be BRILLIANT in Inferno. They're currently looking for more vessels, and that would go good with their current vessel designs.
It's your choice, but i personally think it would be a nice addition.
Once again, superb ship dude!
-
I would agree on the turret designs.....they're enormous!! Going by other reference points I would guess that each one is around about the size of an FS cruiser!
Incidentally, what's the rest of the armament?
-
Still a bit blocky for my tastes, but that's why I have such trouble making my own meshes... I think "fish"-like...
Oh, would you like a screeny of current progress on your Orion model? And if so, is it OK to post here?
-
Yes! Post it godamit!
I will make the turrets a bit smaller, but those are Medium Ion Cannon Turrets (the Main armaments), they were supposed to be big. (ever seen a WW2 Battelship?)
It will allso have 4 beam cannons, and around 40-50 smaller flak/AAAf/ Laser turrets (anti-bomber, standard)
If Inferno wants it I'll give it to them.
I don't have time to give it a uber-texturing job.

:doubt: Then don't texture. Simple as that. If you can't be bothered to do it right, why do it at all? Quality >(++) Quantity/Speed.

It's ok if they're big but then you'll have to detail them so they don't look like some tiny mg turret.
-
Here's a preview. The wrapping lights were a b1tch, and have been making me lose interest in doing it... But I'll finish it soon...
-
Nice...but you don't have to make it completely a standard-Orion look-a-like. You can try to use some more hi-tech looking textures now and then (there was a pic of a Orion with small blue lights somewhere..that texture was cool)
Anyway, good looking...keep up the good work.
-
The Paladin looks great, TMan. :)

This is what I ment...looks good, doesn't it?
You don't jhave to do it like this, it's up to you....just make it a bit more high-techy
-
Oh...
I honestly never liked that reskin, but it's your model.
Unfortunately though, I don't have those maps... But it would be nothing to replace them, afterward...
-
I can send those map to you...And I don't like that reskin too much eiter...Lights have nothing to do on the top of a ship...only on sides..
Bah...just texture it..I can allways adda map or two on a few places...
-
On your new Orionish model, get rid of the 2 dot thingys in the texture. I don't know what they are, but they sure are ugly.

I see my reskin has some fans.;7:thepimp:
As for Krackers' Orion, I kind of like it, but something's missing from it. It looks too small and just not...Orionlike enough.
As for the maps on my reskin, the main tile is citile4a. The light map is dock04-01a from Dark's Polaris model or from the Clarius freighter from Inferno. The nameplate is a grayscaled version of capital01-05a.
-
As I said, the lights have noithing to do on the top and bottom.
that's what i don't like about your reskin.
-
Love the Paladin redo, fan-damn-tastic. I'm looking at the older model right now, and I assume the shape itself hasn't changed that much. What I think would make it wicked cool would to add a pair of Hecate style "wings" along the main body and place several turrets on both the top and bottom. Also add a string of smaller turrets up the top and bottom of the bow, and some more on the ledge right beside the command tower.
-
But of course there will be more turrets!
Hecate-like wings?....hmmmm....interesting..but it doesn't fit the concept
-
Raa Tor'h...well...is it finished yet?
-
About the Paladin bridge bit - nice touch, but I think it should be even smaller. Reference one of my favourite craft, the Zephyrus gas miner, which also has a bridge:
And the Zephyrus is 251m long. Scale that up and you might get 1km or so for your ship - most GTVA destroyers are 2km, but I don't know quite how long you're aiming for with a 'battlecruiser' definition.

Nope. Haven't had the time to do it. What with work, and all this incessant snow shovelling... And school doesn't help, we're having finals now, so expect it soon, but not too soon... :blah:
-
Battelcruiser is 3km long in my book. And it's a big bridge with lots'a room for lots'a crew....much bigger than the Zephyrus bridge.
-
Truespacin' to Wierd Al Yankovich... I don't think I could do that.
You wouldn't house crew in a bridge (or for that matter put them anywhere close to an exposed position like that if you can help it) unless there was some compelling reason to keep them out of the hull itself. Since this things primary weapons are mounted well outside of the hull, and the engines are offset from the hull, that doesn't leave much to go inside. Anyway, I like the bridge shape but you have to do something different with those turrets. They are a bit too big. Ever been inside (or for that matter, near) a WWII battleship main turret? It's big, but at the most maybe 5 meters tall. That think looks like it's at least 50 meters tall, not counting the barrels. Something that prominent should be more detailed.

I'm reminded that I need to upload those photos I took of the inside of a WW2 Destroyer Turret and its attendant magazine. :D
-
Yeah but the magazine isn't the turret now is it :D.
I've been inside a 16-inch gun turret. It's not THAT big.
-
oh, I'm not disagreeing with you, StratComm, not at all! I'm just saying that you reminded me that I have those photos and I need to upload them. :D
-
Oh ok :)
World War II stuff's pretty cool to look at, isn't it.
-
Did you know that a turret form the Iowa (3-barreld, 406mm) weighs 700 tons!!!!
I'll add more detail to the turrets...and make them a bit smaller.
-
I don't much care about WWII in and of itself, but it was a naval vessel and since I was in the Navy, there's a certain basic appeal.
Trashman. Don't do too much more detail. Just shrink those turrets to about 1/4th their current size--possibly more like 1/6th.
-
Yeah, when you pile up reinforced steel plating to a thickness of several inches, and add all of the mechanics for the turret, it's going to get pretty heavy. After all, if the turret gets breached, you can pretty much kiss the rest of the ship goodbye. (Do you know how much explosive ordinance was stored under those things?) That seems low to me though, because the average main battle tank weighs in at around 70 tons, and their armor isn't NEARLY as thick as a battleship main turret.
And it all depends on whether you're going HT&L or not, but no matter how you cut it those turrets are just too large.

If you're referring to me, it's not Wierd Al, it's MegaHerz... Off their new album Herzwerk II...
-
No, I'm refering to TrashMan. Look at the first pic in this thread :)
-
Yeah..I have a few of his songs and slips...Wierd guy...
I mostly listen to VoE music, classical music, very selective movie music and very selective rock music....
-
How far along is the Paladin redo from completion?
-
Basicly, I just need to slap on some turrets and convert it.
But I'm still pondering on the texturing job. And I have to re-install TS.
-
The new texture job looks great. I especially like what you did with the command tower.
-
He he he... thanx
Raa Tor'h, any progress?
-
...Classes end next week, expect something a little after then.
-
Great!...can hardly wait!
-
KT should be writing you soon.
-
Yes, we have the package. Where would you like it delivered?
-
that reminds me of WC

Meh.
-
Meh again...
-
UUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU....
Nice! Very, very nice! Hat's off Raa T'orh! Alltough I WILL change a texture on a face or two...
-
Do what you like. 'tis your mesh. I'm just glad to have one less thing on my plate. Oh, and glad you like it.
-
Right...You'll get it when I fifnish turreting it/conveting it!
