Post by: Woomeister on December 01, 2003, 11:53:23 am
New user campaign by Blaise Russel called Sol - A History.

Info:

It is 2335. For 14 years, the Terran-Vasudan War had been slowly grinding
its way along, when the appearance of a third species changed everything.

An implacable foe that simply would not die, the Shivans resisted everything
the united Terrans and Vasudans threw at them. Their flagship, the Lucifer,
destroyed the homeworld of the Vasudan people, and now it's on its way to
Earth...

Over the course of four campaigns spanning 37 years, 41 missions and the
fall and rise of two inter-planetary powers, YOU are a soldier for Earth, a
warrior for the Alliance, thrown into life-threatening situation after
life-threatening situation... what part will you play in the developing
history of Sol?

Avaliable on the campaigns download page in the archives. It's about 12mb and has custom mods.

Thanks, Woomeister!

I made some promotional pictures (http://mysite.freeserve.com/sbre/sah/EAC1b.PNG) for Sol: A History (http://mysite.freeserve.com/sbre/sah/EAC2b.PNG) and I'm (http://mysite.freeserve.com/sbre/sah/EAC4b.PNG) hosting them (http://mysite.freeserve.com/sbre/sah/EAC2a.PNG) on my website (http://mysite.freeserve.com/sbre/sah/EAC3a.PNG) for you (http://mysite.freeserve.com/sbre/sah/EAC4a.PNG) all to look at. Do tell me what you think!

Must... have... higher-res... backgrounds...

When something looks that grainy, please don't use it.  Also, I'm going to have to ask.  What's a Venusian?

Pfaugh. It looks fine to me. What should I have done instead? Are there... other backgrounds?

A Venusian... play the campaign and you'll find out.

Alright, alright... A Venusian (Vee-NOO-zee-un) is someone or something that comes from Venus.

Err... those are way too pixelized... Make the graphic atleast 2x the size it is now, and blur it if you have to...

And... err... That's some funky shinemapping you got going on there...

Damnit, Jim, I'm a FREDer, not a background-making-person-guy.

And do you mean funky as in 'groovy', or funky as in 'stuff you get between your toes'? 'Sides, I didn't make them either. I gots them from the SCP.

:shaking: Ooer. I imagined ticker-tape parades, not screenshot criticisms. Damn! I went to all this trouble of submitting screenshots that I thought were the best thing EVAR, only to discover that they aren't quite as good as I thought they were!

Oh well. At least the campaign is kinda nice.

*hides point somewhere*

For the last one, I agree that the planet is somewhat poor resolution-wise.  However, if you plan to make this compatible with SCP builds using the -t32 flag, you could just make use of their higher resolution planets, currently being constructed by Lightspeed.

Later!

Heh... Sorry, bro.  We are all thankful that you released a campaign, and awefully quickly at that...

Say... You wanna work for TVWP? (http://www.3dap.com/hlp/hosted/14_year_war/) ;7

You know you want to...

No worries! Criticism is always good.

And I've already been approached by TVWP... I don't think there's any real reason to refuse, do you?

For the dumb (me), does that mean yes?

I'll go get Goober to set everything up, if so...

And, Sid, we can share him, no? :p

Well, when Goober PMed me I asked him to play through both Homesick and Sol: A History before he makes any decisions, because I wouldn't want to do wrong by any of you and trick you into taking me on on the basis of a few missions that are good by fluke, *breath*.

But yes, I would love to work for both Inferno and TVWP.

Well we only have two active freders so more would be useful :)

Sol: A History has been updated, both a new zip file and a patch (http://mysite.freeserve.com/sbre/sah/SAHPatch.zip) zip are available on my site. Minor changes, along with inclusion of original Freespace icons what I forgot to put in (erk).

I may not be perfect, but I'm not lazy. Unpatched buggy goods equals a no-no. So hugs all round!

yay for patches!

Umm, would you guys consider updating the archives by moving the Apollo II to the Reskins section, and updating it by saying it does have interface art?

Very cool so far. Some little niggles though:

-The 2335 campaign should have the original Avenger, not the T2, and should have the Flail and Banshee.
-There should be some new ships in between the FS1 ships and Inferno EA. Check the Reciprocity site for Modeldump 4 and some of Aldo's older models.
-The Jovian fighters should be JCF Hercules/Valkyrie/Ulysses and JCB Medusa/Ursa
-The PVD Typhon description should mention that Sol was destroyed and a Typhon will never be encountered by the GTA/EA again.
-The Delta wing fighters launched from the Bastion were Thoths piloted by Vasudans. Not all of those ships were GTA.
-The Lucifer should blow up halfway through jumping in. If it explodes outside the node like it did, the subspace node would survive.

Valid points! However, I have some excuses:

Quote

One reason for my not doing that was that it was an Inferno mod, so I figured I'd stick to Inferno ships. Um, and also because the GTVA went from FS1 ships to FS2 ships pretty quickly. But, really, mainly because I didn't want to overload myself. Second campaign and all.

*goes and has a look at Modeldump 4 anyway*

Well, since technically the mod starts while the Sol jump node is still intact, that wouldn't be true, 'cause they don't know that Lucy's going to collapse the node. Indeed, 'cause then the Lucifer's tech entry would also be different, and there would be much confusion between pilots and precognitive tech room data entry peeps.

Short of making a new model of half a Lucifer with an insanely low amount of hitpoints and having that explode outside the node, I don't see how that can be accomplished. If I time it any closer, the Lucifer doesn't show up, although the explosions do.

Feedback mucho appreciated!

Yeah, and there's the fact that the Lucy was split in half and the two pieces drifted away from each other in the cutscene, which is also impossible to replicate properly and still have one SD Lucifer showing up on the target box. The first mission was kind of scary in a way even though I knew the outcome before I started it.

You abandoned us, Vasudan-sympathizing scum! You will fall before the might of glorious Neo-Terra for your treachery against your fellow humans!
