Title: smoke trails
Post by: redmenace on December 09, 2003, 11:45:20 am
Is is possible to have smoke trails on missles. like freelancer and Battle star galactica. also can we have smoke trails coming off of ships from damage instead of the current sprites, i think that is what is called. Or were they just animations. I think this implemented for fighter engines as of right now but I am not sure about the rest.

I think he means like, real smoke, not the 2D stuff we have right now.

And that's impossible as of right now, because there is no smoke anywhere else in the game, either.

otherwise, red, wtf are you talking about? :wtf:

sorry could have sworn I saw trails coming off a herc at one time. Although Real smoke would be so be so awesome. Could we do it with particle generator.

You probably saw those trails coming off of a screeny that...mm, forgot the campaign. Anyway, he just abused the nebulae trail code, and made the trails and the trail points really big.

At least that's what I think he did. You can find the piccy in the featured pics list.

damaged spots spew particles to simulate smoke. Am I the only one to remember that? :doubt:.

here is it but is there anyway to fix those seperations inbetween segments. But I guess those are not 3d and are just 2d trails. But then again, I am guessing 3d trails would be difficult to implement. I guess this will die with the dream of having more flexibility as in terms of the position they are in on the model and still have them target right.

Anyway, the best way to do 3d trails is with pspew flags and settings. It works very well if you do it right.

That example BTW is using the missile trail code and not the particle spew code.

indeed. that is the missile trail thing used on a ship. so basically, redmenace, you're asking us to do nothing.

If you ever do anything for ship damage - please please do it this way.

wouldn't it just have to fade out, then?

Yes, the particle images are usnig an 'add' function, so the darker the colour, the more transparent.

Course, would be better to have Animations with Alpha channels, but you can't have everything ;)

sorry to say but I would have no idea either way I am neither a graphics guru nor a coder. but I guess we currently could add this in without any modifications. If yes, how? and how hard would it be create a descent animation that disapears? Sorry to be annoying an all. But could these be done with damage trails? However when  I think of it, doing that would cause problems.

Hm... trying to think of what Earth did, they had a really kickarse particle system and were far too low-tech for anything like volumetrics, but managed to make it look perfectly 3d and everything...

Speaking of pspew, is there any way to specify a cone behind the emitter in which the particles are launched? I'd like to make something akin to the Starlancer (also topical) carriers' plasma cannons.

Oh and before someone comes out with 'use the search' it doesn't work any more for me. :(

I would actually really like it if someone posted some pspew settings for a good missle trail as well as a screenie. :D
