The Punisher.. I guess. You know.. in sync with the new movie.. made after the comic books.

I feel so.. empty.

Won't cry, neither. Honestly, aside from the extended Descent series I haven't seen anything Volition did that impressed me. Didn't think Red Faction was nearly so horrible as everyone claimed (though I only played about two levels), but aside from the geomodding and tanks it was a completely generic shooter, and most of their other games were about the same- one or two innovative touches (often brilliant, sometimes not) in an otherwise mediocre game. The middle Descent was like that, FS2 only stood out because FS1 was inspired, Summoner just isn't my thing in general so I can't comment much. Much as I like a lot of the things they did with FreeSpace and appreciate all they did for their community (which is, near as I can tell, more than any other company has done, with the possible exception of Valve), they were never exactly Bullfrog or Particle.

In fact, it appears that what really made them cool (their close relationship to the community) really dried up shortly after RF- understandably, given that any mode of communication regarding a shooter is basically going to be assholes 24/7, so there's not a whole lot to lose here. They'll continue to make relatively generic titles with a couple neat twists as always, no loss to fret about there.

Hmm.  If I cared, I'd comment more.  But I don't so I won't.

actualy there close comunity ties dried up quite suddenly a short while after FS2, just a bit before the THQ takeover was anounced, though after RF it was comletely silenced.
meh, I'v given them up as ownd

Yeah Bobbau has it nailed...I used to have Adam Pletcher, DaveB, and some of the others on my ICQ list for a while.  I wouldn't bug them every day or anything but I did get some good information and some clarifications on things during FS2's development.  I even e-mailed Mike Kulas...heck Orange, Remora, Dynamo, and I even went down and met the guys....I went to Volition twice actually.  It was a blast both times I met lots of people Mike Kulas in particular was excellent to talk to and I had quick chats with most of the guys.  Sadly not Dan Wentz as he was away both times I was there but these guys were really cool.  Not that they aren't anymore but their communication with the community has changed since the THQ buyover especially.

It started changing after Summoner and Red Faction came out as well.

BTW: Summoner was a completely inspired game in my view.  I don't play alot of RPG's and I like even less of them but Summoner really appealed to me alot.  I've played it through 3-4 times now and everything about it was well done and plenty of fun to be had.  Too bad I never got a chance with Summoner 2...maybe rent it for GC sometime and see what its like.

Since they're doing Punisher, I see three reasons:
A) They've run out of ideas
B) They've sold out
C) They believe they can do it better than anyone else.
Take your pick.

Well they say that the world is small and getting smaller. Well its a very small place it seems. The Punisher movie, that Volition is creating a semi-related video game (that we've previously reported on) for, is apparently being helmed (in the executive producer role) by none other than Chris Roberts also known as the guy who created Wing Commander. This is a strange twist indeed since Volition's first game as a separate development house from Parallax was FreeSpace, a game heavily influenced by Chris Roberts' Wing Commander series (amongst others).

Intresting..hhmm

For some reason all of my memories of any WC game I've played seems to involve flying through a ****ing minefield or asteroid field at Nav3 on a patrol route.

WC can bite my balls.

....and don't realise Lucasarts owns anyone. (If you don't count Elite.)

It's sad people don't realise the similarities between their favorites instead vehemently enforce the differences. (What's wrong with torps anyway? :) .)

As for Volition - another team with good potential was squashed by the industry....where are the old myths of programmers ripping worlds out of nothingness?

I'd have to see really REALLY good reviews from a game magazine or IGN before I'd buy Punisher for the PC.  And even then, I'd probably wait til it's on discount.   But it sounds like it's not a FPS, but a GTA type of Third person (or tomb raider).  If it's gonna be like that, I'd prob just rent it for the PS2.

he is Punisher film's executive producer  Chris Roberts

Quote
It's not quite Wing Commander: The Movie: The Game, but it's close. If you haven't been following his every move lately, Wing Commander creator Chris Roberts is currently executive producer of the upcoming comic-inspired Punisher movie. Several sites have recently reported that the new movie will have a video game to go along with it. The game will be released for the Playstation 2 and XBox is the fall of 2004. So far it doesn't look like Chris Roberts himself will have anything to do with the game's production.

In the case of Summoner (I play tons of RPGs) they tried very hard, but failed in so many ways. The story was excellent and they tried to mesh western and easten RPG styles, but as a result had the worst of both worlds. (Linearity that would kill sidequests if you advanced too quickly, repetitive combat with a clunky system, character customization was limited)

Though this sounds harsh, it makes Summoner a 70% in my personal rating of it, as opposed to a 90%. I've played much worse games, and Summoner's story was good enough to keep me interested though predictable at times.

What I've heard of Summoner 2, sounds awesome. They tightened the combat system and overall focus of the game, but since they're not planning on doing a PC release, I don't plan on playing it.

Elite was the first 3D Space Sim that I can remember. That makes Roberts at least 5 years too late.

Mmmmm Elite. I just hope Frontier developments have made enough money from "A dogs life" to fund continued production on Elite 4.

I want Elite 4 badly.
