Could a SCP member please provide a comprehensive list and links to the current versions of all important files pertaining to running and modding FS2:SCP.
(FS2:Open, Launcher, Media VP's, PCS, etc.......)
I am quite frustrated with having to have to comb through countless forums to find the LATEST releases and versions of crucial software to run and mod Freespace 2 SCP.
I recently started modding Freespace and right now my hard drive is a mess of so many versions of different stuff. I fear that many of the problems I am experiencing, either running or modding, are in vain because of outdated files.
This will prevent many newbie questions and problems from repeating. The SCP Genious Machine can focus on the latest bugs and problems that are relevent in the continuing evolution of Freespace 2.

Maybe it would be an idea to have an automatic updater for some of these things.
-
It would, except that with the exception of the SCP, they're changed about once a year, tops.
-
Sticky this RIGHT NOW!
Erhm...it seems like quite a good idea.
-
Actually, stickying this would be a very wise idea.
Or, possibly a better idea, have one of the project heads make a new topic and they always keep the latest files linked to in the first post, and sticky that. It'll reduce confusion for a lot of people who use FSO. Including myself. >>
-
Stickied for the time being, until we get something official together.
-
Auto updater? Make it work from the launcher to work with the Media pack, launch and the exe?
Wow, good idea!
-
And all in one pack?
Would make things much easier for the normal user to find and use SCP to the full.
-
Or at least some place on the forum that has a link to the latest stuff.
-
Yes, this is a good idea. Go ahead with it. it would make many of our searches much easier, and it would save alot of time >)

just a small noobish like question here. was wonderin if theres a version of MODVIEW that lets you look at all these pretty high poly ships, cause i cant seem to find one!
hi to everyone by the way.
-
ok, scrap that last question, jst found 1! sorry for the trouble. luv what you guys are doin by the way, keep it comin!

Target horrifred. Target locked. Fire.
:welcome:
Welcome to HLP. There are exits to the left and rear. Do not attempt to use them. Under your seat you will find empty beer cans, cookie crumbs, corpses of newbies, dog eared dungeon Porn mags left by Shrike... oh, and a Flamethrower. Unfortunately, we're out of napalm, so you'll have to bludgeon people to death with them.
In the event of serious conflict, there are plasma rifles in the forward locker, though these can only be opened by an Admin, [V], God, or Hyperintelligent shade of the colour Blue. If, for whatever reason, you find yourself crawling around in the ductwork, there's a better than average chance you'll encounter a Shivan. They're easy to spot with the five legs and all. If you're lucky, it's just Carl, who responds well to food rewards. If not, then at least you die quickly. Be aware that the entrance to the main control room is guarded by subspatial claymore mines.
Do not mention FS3. Karajorma's FAQ is your friend. Have a nice day.

I am going to check the fs2 modding forums for new high poly models.
-
hmmmm......
just 1 tiny little gripe about the new builds - i still dont see an option to turn off Shinemaps....Spec mapping should be enough I think, no need for the full thing (especially - no offense - some of them are just udly)
-
If you don't want the shine maps but do want the spec just don't install them :D
If you've got the media.vp simply extract all the files and delete anything that ends in shine. Then move the media.vp out of your Freespace2 folder.
-
question - does the media vp include all the abovementioned features that are placed in seperate links? (with exception of the high-poly herc and fenris ofc)
-
IIRC it doesn't include any of them yet.

Welcome to HLP, horridfred... glad you're enjoying the fruits of the Team's labour. :)

updates with lightspeeds new planets bobboau's new 2-14-04 build and weapons 2e.
-
Red would you mind updating the wiki (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/fsdoc/index.php/LatestVersions) when you update this thread?
If you do I'll do it but it seems inefficient to have two people doing basically the same thing. :)
Anyway I've already updated it for this set of changes.
-
umm I might. it just means I have to actually learn how to use it. Umm I also am planning to talk to Goober about more regularly updating the website mainly for the purposes of appearence. I mean I don't want people to think it is dead. Karajorma, are you saying you have been updating the WIKI with the most recent changes? I will gladly take that up, however, I will update both locations and most likly all 3 if Goober thinks it a good idea to keep it updated.
-
I'm assuming you know HTML. Although the language used by the Wiki is different the fundementals are the same. If you login as RedMenace (you have to use a login with 2 capital letters) and click on the edit button you'll see the source of the page the way I made it.
When you're updating an existing link (e.g most recent media.vp, FS2_open exe) all you'll have to do is look for the old URL and replace it with a new one. Shouldn't take you more than 5 seconds to figure out how to cut and paste a new one in there :D
If you're adding something new you shouldn't find it too hard either since again you can just cut and paste one of my lines and edit it until it says what you want. :)
If you're writing a wiki page from scratch you might have a problem as you have to learn all the new commands but editing an existing page is very simple :)
-
well the way I learn is to look at the source and look at the finished page. But It doesn't seem that hard. besides I dan't want to take you from your own projects. But, I think I can figure it out over spring break. I have plans to get some work on the wiki done as well that I have not had time to do.
-
Sorry i havent replied, been away over the weekend!
as for suggestions for this semi official listings, i think it may be a good idea to start a new 1 every now and then, after the first page updates seem to get spread out too much so it takes ages to find...
havin said that there hasnt been any real problems i dont think!
so if ya like my idea, use it, if ya dont ignore me and even laugh at me if it makes ya feel better! :D

What do you mean? maybe I should reorganize the links into categories that can be easily read and recognized. But most likely the best thing would be the HTML solution. I will most likley work something out over spring break in march. But I must be careful my list is growing and growing.
-
sorry, wasnt making much sense!
what i meant was that every now and then people add new links rather than just update the old ones, so they get spread out and hard to find
anyways its not a big problem so dont worry
gtg, need food be back in a coupla days...
-
I update the old ones also. the bulds you see there are experimental builds. What I will do is work on the arangement of it.
-
I think the download links should definitely be put into categories.
eg Game enhancements, development tools, test builds etc.
Also having the last date you updated in big bold red letters somewhere would be a good idea as well.
-
That's a good idea. I'd already put in the catagories in the Wiki Version
http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/fsdoc/index.php/LatestVersions
but adding dates isn't a dreadful idea :D
-
got a small prob with modview, it still cant open some of the new ships people are bringin out, either cause they have too many turrets (>64 i think) or it has 'too many bounding boxes'
is there another version that i still havent found or is there a way round this???
-
probably there is but I wouldn't know where to get it. ask Kazan possibly.
-
Could someone just take all the latest builds, vps, launchers, etc and bung them all in one largish zip?
I've done a clean install, see, and downloading loads of individual files requires more effort than I can handle.
-
you only need the media VP, 20_01_2004, and lightspeeds stuff.
03_05 is way to unstable, and all the other stuff is in there somewhere. and it changes about every other day, and i'm not going to be the one to keep up.
-

read Mantis, mmkay?

I see. These bugs were there before, though.
-
the crash on loading of release wasn't, the crash on ship select in ANY mission wasn't, and i'm not so sure about the crash in Slaying Ravana either.
(note i might have misnamed some bugs, the one named for Ravana is generic, the one you closed seems mission specific.)

You must tick the -jpgtga box for them to work. Did you?
-
you should use the newest launcher and the newest 3-8-04 build too. it is fairly stable. you might notice they are fairly bright and the particle trails from damage being very bushy. they usually are not that way. personally i like em that way ;7
oh, I am not sure if you are aware of this before you ask, you cannot play the original mve movies. and you cannot play the divx versions with any build bobboua makes. You can rip and encode the movies your self.

Do you have winRar 3 or above? Winrar 2 has problems with WinRAR3 files.

Guys, someone mentioned a page update. Bloody well do it!
Having a notice in the downloads section saying "This isn't the best place for the latest version" is just poor, seriously.
I don't think many people want to run around forums sifting through a confusing pile of conflicting information. It is not good for the popularity of this mod! You must remember that many people haven't played FS2 in years, and on finding out about FSSCP, a webpage like that just might convince them to leave it for a few more, let alone go disk hunting.
Mods these days need to ooze quality, and I imagine yours would if the website was updated and made more clear and concise (the FAQ makes no mention of the movie playback issues, for example, and nothing about installation the feature list on the website is out of date...).
I like FS2 so much that I am willing to do it for you, except I am more familiar with ASP, Javascript and XML Transformations than PHP as yet, so I would have to go read a book first.
I haven't tried your mod yet, and I haven't a clue where to get the media files yet, but I am looking forward to it and I am a FS fan. Thankyou in advance for your hard work on the mod ;)

I'm literally updating the wiki as we speak to make it a definative guide on how to download and install FS2_open.
The problem is the sheer speed at which things change. The guide I'm updating was written last month and is already obsolete!
Check the link in my sig in an hour or so and tell me what you think. I desperately need feedback from someone completely new to the community to tell me if the guide could be followed by someone new. Guess what. You've just volenteered yourself ;)
-
(In Max voice) Oooh ooh! Pick me! Pick me!! :D
I used the old instructions to get it running before, and the improvements are also helpful (The updated flags will be very handy! I cheated because everyone told me about them yesterday 'tho :))
TBH 'tho - the trickiest part of getting SCP up and running is all the different builds. I've got like, 8 different exes now!
And Bob just released a new one too! I'm torn between using that (Which knowing my luck will blow up) or the one Lightspeed pointed me at yesterday (Which is rock solid, but very dark and seems to have no shield effects)
The thing is, I don't get which of the builds I have are official and which ones aren't - there seem to be many forks of the SCP compiled by different people!
-
the people that are having the most problems are newbies. the last "official build" is in the news section in the projects page. usually I update the post that is in this thread with all the new information and build and the like. However I will see if it is possible to update the download of latestebuild.exe on the main site. But the latest build is the 3/14/04 build of bobboua's.
I will talk to sticks about updates later.
-
The shield effect thingy was fixed, along with a couple of other stuff.
Kazan needs to compile a new (working) multiplayer build. Bob's new test exe has some experimental IRC code in it, as it seems - thus multiplayer doesnt work (and crashes upon entering the game room).
-
anyone other than me making builds needs to go into fs2ox.cpp in the /network folder and uncomment the rathaven define - or simply add the definition to their build settings
-
I take it that adding the pre-processor definistion will fix this problem.
-

The simple answer is that none of them are official :D We're getting close to 3.6 now so everyone is busy working on fixing bugs. The result is that we get loads of releases put out but they are all very similar to each other anyway since the only differences are bug fixes.
My advice is simply use whatever you find works for now :) If you want to help swap them every once in a while and report bugs you find I'm sure the SCP programmers will be grateful.
I'm glad the revised version of the Wiki helps but as you said you've recieved help from other quarters so it's hardly an objective test. I'll probably integrate the installing mods section as the bit about Global and Campaign Specific installs is very closely linked.
-
The install guide is pretty good, it resolves my beef with locating the latest versions of the various files and clear and concise instructions.
I don't consider your mod hard to install. Once you have installed the Japanese Grand Touring Championship for Sports Car GT, almost any mod installation is easy ;)
Thankyou for the reply and link, it is nice to see a forum of responsible people for a change.
Seeing as I have a good impression of the community, I will stick around :)

-
You didn't find it hard because you had the guide :) Believe me it was a lot harder when I first tried it :D Lots of other people have found it difficult too because as you say the files were everywhere.
I'll try to keep that page updated though since it will probably save me time in the long run :D

The SCP actually isn't a mod. It's more like a patch :)

Just a suggestion I don't wan't to use Winrar, too many holes for hackers to use, and I think haveing a .zip would be good for the community so you get even more downloads.
I usally get no probs with RAR files in powerarchiver, it only happens when the file was not packed properly. so please fix it so I can injoy what every one els is too. :( :nervous:

any particular reason why you point to an at least 3 years old version? coz there's a notice against using 1.2
Note: Due to incompatibilities with recent CVS(NT) server distributions and a few other known issues it is no longer recommended to use this release for new installations.
this will not become appearant if you use the included commandline cvs.exe, but will become so when updating the commandline stuf without updating the GUI
latest recommended release is 1.3.13.2...

no

my understanding is that it is the most stable version. If there is not reason to use 1.2 then I will update the link.

Last year I ran into problems running 1.3.x. We don't have a "new" CVS server installation, so using 1.2 shouldn't be a problem.
Is 1.3 stable now?
