While I was waiting for a headhunter to call me back about a job, I started screwing about in LW. One thing led to another, what with Venom and wEvil doing bots, and I ended up with some odd bot head thing. So I decided to animate it. I'll probably go back and rework the entire thing from scratch, but I like the direction its going right now.
Here's an early render. Click the pic to download a short (400k, XviD compressed) AVI.

I dunno but I think Bob is pretty cute
-
But I think I've already seen him somewhere.
But where???? Damn, my brains betray me again :doubt:
-
I hope you haven't seen him anywhere, sine he's mainly created out of my own head.
No comments on the animated version?
-
I kind of completly ignored the sentence about the pic=link thinguy (http://www.jeuxvideo.nu/forum/images/smiles/icon_redface.gif)
gonna check it now
edit: lol, this guy's funny :)
has doglike expressions, somehow
-
The head tilt thing? That's exactly why I put it in there. I like dogs: you can tell how they feel about things by the way they move their heads. They emote clearly, so I figured I'd use those sorts of mannerisms.

an updated version of Bob:

mmh, splines :)
-
reminds me a bit of Eva 01's head
-
Not splines, Venom. Subdivision surfaces. There's not a single spline to be seen anywhere in that model. These are just flat polys that have the equivalent of a meshsmooth+subdivision added.

There's no need to be insulting...

Ah. well, look exactly like max splines there, that's why :)

I understand you don't like evangelion, but you also think the evas look bad?
Anyway, I don't see much ressemblance with the eva01's head, save maybe for the lower jaw ( the square teeth things ) and the fact the head is more on the lenghty side than the rounded side.
-
I was joking, Venom. The design of the Eva units are the only thing that save NGE from being a complete waste of film.
That looks like Max Splines? I should show you the actual model before the smooth subdivision takes place. It's ugly. ;)
-
In fact, here is the raw version of Bob.
Where it looks like polys are missing, its because they're not flat, so they don't get rendered right. This doesn't matter for the subdivision though, because when their each turned into 10x10 subDs, they curve properly.
-
LW can't show non flat polys?
-
Not reliably. When they are only slightly bent, say a few degrees, its not a problem. But when they're bent at like 75 deg, it becomes an issue. It doesn't know necessarily, which direction to divide the poly into triangles. Its seldom an issue. Its very easy to avoid non-flat polys. When working with subdivisions, however, non-flat polys are exactly what you want.
-
Well, I guess that's just a viewport issue anyway. Can be bothersome when you're doing UV mapping, tho, I think. Well, "triangulating" the whole thing could be a possibility, but that would mess up subdivision, if it works the same as max...
-
the first one was cute, as in cartoonish cute, but not like a cartoon.... the second one looks too much like a skull to be cute.
-
Icespeed, are you related to my wife? She said like exactly the same thing. I'm still refining him. He's becoming progressively more skull like and more monkey like. I decided to ditch the antennae ear things and switched to modelled in ear cups on the sides fo his head.
Venom: yeah, subdividing 3pt polys should be avoided. It just dosn't look right. If you do your UVs while its subdivided (you're still working with the same number of points) you'll be reasonably okay.
-
erm, mik, if im related to your wife you'd probably know by now... possibly its a girl thing.
why have all your eyes in the front? i mean, ears can pick up sound from most directions anyway, but if you have both eyes at the front you get good depth of vision but not much field...
-
The eyes are at the front because I'm giving less attention to sane design and more attention to expression. Bob's mainly an experiment in animation and modelling, not serious design. I leave things like that to Venom.
Here's the most recent two versions. I'm going to leave the head alone for now and start working on the arms and hands.

Well, I did something stupid, and as a result, I don't know how much 3d work I'll be able to do for a little while. I've basicly lost most everything on my machine do to some stupidity. :(
I don't think I'm going to be able to finish this for a while.
-
hey, that's too bad, mik. my sympathies.
and that last one reminds me of a fish, don't know why. maybe the fin.
so cheer up, just think, the sign of a true artist is being able to make people think weird things. go you.
