Title: Shielding Lucifer in FS2?
Post by: TopAce on December 17, 2003, 10:40:11 am
I know there is a mod for FS1, where the Lucifer has shields, but I wonder if there is a similiar mod for FreeSpace 2.

[EDIT] Wrong thread title again: Shielded Lucifer. :)

with fso, any capship can have shields, althought no graphic effect is associated to this opportunity

So if I hit the Lucy, won't it have the shield hit effect?

Exactly. You'll hear the sound, but don't see any effect, just the FS glowing damage trail, as always. From what I now, shields on capships can't handle a specific amount of impacts; because of the huge size of capship shields, this happens quite often. Though I don't know if it crashes when too much weapons hit the shields at the same time, or after a certain amount of hits. Or something.

There was also discussion by GalEMP to returret and add shields to the upgraded Lucifer available in the Inferno archives.  This was visually designed to resemble the shots of the Lucifer from the FS1 cutscenes and CB ani files, with the swept horns on the upper front section, and the 4-prong claw things on the sides.

Later!

That would be cool...
I have a campaign concept taking digital dust somewhere that was scuttled because it required a lot of features like that one...
I would give it to anyone who asks...
Someone interested?

I just incorporated shields on my Galaxy class. The shield effects are present, but it would seem that it was really made for a smaller vessell. It looks way too blurry and cartoony. I'll see what I can do to find a replacement ANI.

zarax maybe you should post part of the ideas in the freespace campaigns forum.

omni:
be careful with "real" shields on capships:
they have tobe  uberhigh polybecause the effect will be shrinked over the polys: the bigger the polys the worse the effect.
And shields on capships as said above are known to sometimes cause a  crash

I learned of this early on, so I tried a 2k poly shield mesh which made the effect look better. Its just annoying that a fighter cannot penetrate the shields as along as your OUTSIDE the shield perimeter. You can just slip through the shield and fire while inside. Urgh!

I attemped an even more ambitious experiment. I made a dupilcate of the entire Galaxy class mesh (15k), minus unecessary details and mapping, and it successfully converted and worked as a skin tight shield. As I expected it crashed 3 minutes into the game.
