giving a ship stealth mode and textering it with invisible.pcx is an old trick...but still quite cool. he probably just shot randomly for 3 hours.

Let's see, with proper sub-objects, custom explosion .anis, as well as keying the "cloaked" or "non-cloaked" part as a self-destruct when key pressed SEXPT, you can have a player cloaking ship.
For CPU sake, having it with only enough sub-objects to cloak or decloak once (maybe twice by layering enough models in there) would work well.

Actually, just a completely black texture. I couldn't find the invisible.pcx anywhere in the vp files (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

That's a simple but nice idea.
By the way, do you guys think its actually possible to make vehicles and even humans cloak? I mean in real life.

well since photons dont have a charge it would be quite hard to "bend" them around an object without a massive gravity field
The closest thing anyone so fa rhas come up with is combination photoreceptive/chemeleon cells.
They detect the environment youre in and change their colour accordingly..so youre not really invisible, just the same colour as the background in relation to the viewer.

back to fs2: for the invisible map, just make a perfect green map 000 256 000. Some video cards (the voodoo series for example), doesn't handle that, anyway, and you end up with a super visible green ship (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Yea, and the nebula backgrounds are playing with it too. I thought the black texture was made transparent by the engine.

I thinks pure green (0 255 0, right?) is transparent in FS.

A really big black ship would be cool...seeing more and more stars disappearing in front of you, in an expanding radius...could be quite frightening.

Uh...What's the name of that Transformers mod again? did'n't they use a similar trick to 'transform' ?
Let's see, we need a center object to be the main object...lod0 becomes hull0-subobj for decloaked, hull0-subobj-destroyed for cloaked, and since the 'cloaked' part don't need to be detailed...a cube could almost do...and since subobjects can be repaired (or SEXPed to a key)...
That would make it reusable and CPU friendly, not?

the mod you're talking about is the robotech mod. the repair thing won't work, coz the subsystem is repaired, but the subobject itself remains destroyed. Sorry, you can transform only once.

i made ship with completely black textures so it would be visable infront of nebulas and stuff but with enough dark space left still made it hard to spot head on at time - i also gave it thrustersflames to amke sure you hd something tos hoot at (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) it was also the fastest most mauervable fighter ever and had hull rating 5000 and shields 5000 (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) serious pain the *** to kill (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)- oh yeah its weapson were doing 100 damage each hit (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif) and ti carried 4 banks
