Title: The llamas strike again
Post by: diamondgeezer on December 18, 2003, 10:14:13 am
Seems WinAmp 5 is out. I'm investigating as we speak.

Hey look, FilePlanet has a new hi-res DoomIII trailer as well. Not a bad day for downloading shizat says I.

[EDIT] OK, well it's kept all my old WA2 settings. Which is nice. Seems similar to 3 in resource hoggage. Hopefully though this one will give me more for the resources is consumes...

They skipped Winamp 4?

I stuck with the latest version of Winamp 2 for one reason - it has the "J" function. The most useful function for any media player - ever.

Winamp 2 + Winamp 3 = Winamp 5 ;)

Using it now. Better than Winamp 3. I'm not getting rid of Foobar, though.

Yeah, press "J" and it'll bring up a window with a text box and playlist - you can type in the name (or partial name) of a song file and it'll reduce down the list untill that song is the only one left - or group of songs if you don't type out the entire song title. For instance if I typed in "Tool" then all my Tool sounds would be in the selectable list but everything else is removed. If I type in "Tool - Parabola" then that song alone will be in the selection box. Press enter and it skips to that track. Great when you have a couple of thousand MP3s to shift through.

Edit: Holy ****, they put it back in! YES! For an example load up Winamp5 and go to your playlist editor. Press J and observe the results. Classic.

iTunes has that too, in the form of a search box.:D

But I still use winamp for internet radio sometimes.

yeah the 'j' function is pretty neat, particularly when you have a few thousand songs in your playlist... you can find one in less than 5 seconds, which is quite handy.

I'm also still on Winamp 2.76 or 2.*something*, because i liked the features it has, they're all i need, so i've just never upgraded since then *shrugs*.

You can set 5 to 'classic' version on install so it's basically the same as 2.7* GUI but with the extra stuff in there too.

yeah, but i think someone said something about it bieng a resource hog? winamp3 i just a lot slower, and it takes more of a PC then 2.91, 2.91 is nice, fast, simple and stable.

WA3 was a goddamn piece of crap. But 5 doesn't seem to take any more than 2 if you're just using it to play MP3's.

Did they put plugins back into WA5? I never use WA3 because all my WA2 plugins don't work for WA3.

Although I prefer iTunes, anything that beats out Microsoft is a perfect 10 in my book.:D
