After reading about Kazan's Ferrium Project I've decided to learn C++ and start working on both that and FS2_open.
I have a background in Java so I do understand many of the concepts needed (when I look at simple C++ code I have an idea what it's doing) but I don't have any actual expericence in C++ so I need some help to get me off the ground.
I'm thinking of following bobboau's route of downloading the FS2_open code and learning from that. but I've got some questions.
1) I seem to remember that you need to use a certain compiler to compile the FS2_open source. Any links?
2) Where do you get winCVS from? Is there anything I need to know about it that isn't mentioned here (http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/fsscp/dev/gettingstarted.php)
3) Any other advice?

1) IIRC, compiling for windows means buying something expensive.
2) there should be a link in the SCP FAQ forum and/or the wiki, if not in the wiki, please add.
3) if you could please rigfht your steps for this, and add them nito a wiki page, i would be very happy.

There was no link on the SCP website that I could find (in between closing all the bloody pop ups).
I made the topic with a nice clear title so that it could be popped straight into the FAQ forum once everyone had answered but I will of course be happy to add stuff to the Wiki as soon as I know what I'm talking about :)

well, i've found this for cvs:
http://fs2source.warpcore.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/cvsweb.cgi/
i'll look for winCVS a bit more, thank you for converting this to the wiki once we're done.
edit:
i love google: http://www.wincvs.org/

In order to compile fs2_open for windows, you will need MS Visual C 6.0 which can be purchased or. . .ahem. . .obtained.

/me points towards the pm system.
kara, if you have broadband, i think i might be able to donate some "cash" towards "buying" VC.

Well that wasn't obvious, no sir
