Title: Anyone need a laugh? I won $1.5 Million... And Mars attacked China.
Post by: Taristin on December 18, 2003, 07:29:05 pm
I got an email, along with about 44 other people saying I won US1.5 million dollars from a Netherloto company...  And that it's part of a US28.5 million dollar prize pot ( 1.5 x 44 =/= 28.5Mil ).  But I thought it was funny to see the stupidity of it... I bet they want my Social Security number and bank account information to forward my prize to.  Oh, and I'm breaching the contract by showing this appearently, but since I'm convinced it's a farce, I don't care.

You obviously fail to udnerstand the sheer idioci=y of the poepl who fall for it...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3323835.stm

"One of its victims is Arlen Hughes from Saratoga in the US state of Wyoming.

He told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that it all started when he received a phone call, "from a fellow in Nigeria, saying I had inherited an oil company and everything that went along with it."

They told him he would inherit $42m, the value of the company, if he paid some money up front.

The Nigerian fraudsters said that as a non-resident, he had to pay $57,000 in tax into a CTB bank account in Scotland to release the millions.

Initially sceptical, Hughes said the lure of the money and the professionalism of the fraudsters took him in: "I found a registered number in Scotland and more research led me to believe that the bank was on the uppity up. So when I began to deal with them I thought they were legitimate."

Hughes and his friends, who he encouraged to invest in the scheme, were duped out of around $145,000. "

Get this - the 'bank' he checked out was a Chemists shop in Thurso.  If he'd simply phoned it, he'd have saved 40 grand......

Notice that the guy from Wyoming never wondered from whom he could have possibly inheritted a Nigerian oil company from! Surely that would be your first question :D
These schemes always prey on the greed of the victim. The lottery Raa Tor'h recieved doesn't usually ask for bank details. Instead it usually claims that as foreigner he would have to pay a processing fee upfront for them to be able to get it out of the country without him having to pay a substantial amount of tax to the government of the country.
You can see where the greed comes in now. Personally I would be happy to pay the tax and deal with the goverment directly so that I could get my money without the problem of dealling with any shady agencies but the people who get taken in by this sort of thing are greedy enough to send money to someone they've never met in order to get money they never earned (and don't even remember entering a contest for!)

It's just sheer greed. I heard a case of a guy who was taken for $50,000 in order to avoid paying $1/2 Dollars he thought he'd won on the canadian lottery. He was told that his winnings amounted to $24 million and yet he was so greedy to avoid losing 2% of the claimed fortune that he ended up getting taken for so much money he ended up having to re-morgage his house.

There's an ID theft scam going on over here. It's where some guy calls someone claiming to be the county courthouse and saying that whoever they are calling failed to show up for jury duty. They then proceed to ask that person their social security number and a bunch of other things. Damn clever in my opinion.

I've had mail from some American banking guy telling me a wealthy relative was killed in an Air Korea accident a few years ago and I had only x-months to claim my unknown fortune.

He first said the money could only remain unclaimed (under US law) for 6 years. He mailed again a few months later and said 7 years.

Then I had mail from some wealthy South African (or somethin') woman claiming she was being oppressed by her Goverment.
If I  supplied my details (to allow her to place some of her fortune in my account) I could retain 20%

Suffice to say, neither have had replies.

Sadly... this is not the case.

A good example here: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/florida/orl-asecnigerian23122303dec23,0,4096704.story

This guy won't even admit to being frauded. He still believes the scammers are his "friends" and the greedy governments are at fault.
