Title: Alien fighter the Valtun
Post by: boewolf on December 19, 2003, 12:53:06 am
I have designed a super heavy fighter \ gunship, and i know that it could use some more detail, (but i don't do that very well), and i think that someone else would give much beter justice to texturing.  anyone got any good ideas??

It has 851 verts, and 634 faces.

I call it the Valtun.  A completely alien craft of unknown power found  shortly after the destruction of Cappella on Vasuda Prime in an area that was exposed by the Lucifer but previosly unexplored.

err...i think you should put a couple of turrets on it if it's a gunship.

Well I get the impression you're going for a sleek alien ship, but even with that in mind, it should still have more definition.

I would add machinery parts or greebles or anything to the bottom/engines/guns to give it some unique definition, then smooth quad divide.

Also, it comes off as more of a interceptor rather than a gunship.

it does come more as an intercepter at the moment.  but its size and the forward beam weapon in the nose will change an enemes mind quite fast.  its going to be bigger than a bomber but smaller than a cruiser.
Title: Interesting...

At first I thought it was small and exclaimed, "look! It's teh Delta Flyer on crack!" ;7  Just kidding... Looks neat..

I was thinking the exact same thing :)

It could use a little more definition but it's looking pretty promising so far.

It's a kids movie. Not a bad one though.

Quite a cool little film for a kiddies' adventure. The ship in it is mightily sweet, it's just a shame you can't make this one morph :D

Can't find an image of it "first class maneuver" mode.. but it looks a lot like the model you made.

hehehehe It's like The Last Starfighter, it's a kid film, but fun nonetheless ;)

Oh yes, and I like the model, but surely putting huge guns on this thing is like destroying the whole Navigator goody goody thing? ;)

well, yes, those images are of the "fat" version, the model is halfway between this one and the more aeorodinamic version
Title: It's NOT a KID film!

It was a documentery you fool! ;)

Besides I need some deck fighters and a command carrier adn a starfighter base, and someone to subobject the gunstar I have and vood we got last starfighter!

LOL!I'd like to see FS2's version of Death Blossom, and who gets to Voice Act the Gung-Ho Iguana? ;)

Though come to think about it, theres quite a lot in common between the Last Starfighter and Alpha One ;)

I like the general shape, but I would re-work it to include weapon points at the two side edges as well as a re-work of the engine--it's kind of funny IMHO. That oval thing on the bottom is kind of unique, it would be good as a distinguisher for a species: maybe thats what there cockpits look like; maybe they're so fat the only way they can be loaded into it is on a flying hover tray?

i was thinking of adding something like staf cannons from a death glider from stargate.  what u think??
Title: Alien fighter the Valtun
Post by: Fineus on December 19, 2003, 05:07:06 pm
Make the cannons indented - if you can keep the streamlined profile of the thing, so much the better. The overall design is simple and classic - and shouldn't be messed with.

ok.  i added some turrets for the gunship.  this is what i came out with.

and the standard without turrets

i think it would look better with triangular shivan turrets or possably octaganal turrets.

Is a turret like this more like the style u were thinking about Fozzy??

I will probably use this turret on the capship i have started for this speacies.

Some textured immages of the Valtun

Also a RBC for the same species

This RBC has one beam weapon and three secondary banks of defencive weapons.

And finily a warship as well

I'm not sure what class to make the warship (Halkatan), and i don't have a name for the RBC.  anyone got some good ideas??

Looks good. Maybe you should curve the back of the warship some more. I also detest those textures :P

The texturing needs work but the models are pretty nice.

I had a funny feeling that people would detest the texturing.  people always do.  I will try them again.  But i won't promes that they will be any better.

Using truespace 3.2 i can't find a uv mapping tool, but i can find a uv projection tool.  Is it the same thing??

Can you render the textures before taking the pictures?
EDIT: OOPS!! sorry still had the first page in my cache before I posted. So ignore this:)

No offense man, but you desperately need LithUnWrap. Get it now from ZDnet.com

Looks like it might be a good ship if properly mapped.

Don't go to ZDnet. Get the version from The Ship Creation Guide in my FAQ.

TS3 doesn't have a built in UV mapper (only TS6+ does). When it comes to mapping fighter Lith is the best way to go anyway.

after nearly a week of reading and trying things in LithUnWrap i am yealding no possitive results.  would someone else like to have a go so i can see how good you think it could look??

my efforts will continue..

also i will post some screens when i get something worth while

my main problem is that the textures i am trying to use are always too big for the job i want to use them for.  how can i make the textures smaller in LithUnWap??

Well, if you post a link to the .cob file (or even the .scn) I think I might be able to generate Lith maps for this.

PM it (the link), or even e-mail it.

Oh, and Karajorma's FAQ has a link to a tutorial on using LilithUnwrap.  Check it out.

If i understand what you mean, you can do this by changing the dimensions of the UV plane in TS - i.e. the bigger the UV plane (or box, but it's a lot worse looking - basically, you're better off doing by-face planar mapping), the larger the area the texture is shown over.
