What game would you make it a mod for? Just as a heads up, I'm not actually interested in applying the results of this poll - my FPS modding skills are pretty much zilch. Nor do I want to use it as a suggestion to Sandwich anybody else thinking of this project, as I know Sandwich is set on Serious Sam, and anybody else who might take up the project would probably only do it if they already had an engine in mind. I'm simply curious.
Anyway, my vote would go to Half Life. I know the engine's dated, and it doesn't have item use, but it does have several big pros, eg Availability (Everyone's got Half Life, and it's still being sold), Low system specs (Leading to a wide mod dissemination) and a massive community with tonnes of modding experience, and therefore presumably a fair number of tutorials, tools and helpful forumites.
Any other nominations?

UT2k3 or 2k4. There are vehicles you can drive and it looks sweet
-
Half-Life [glow=orange]2[/glow][/i]
because everyone will have it, just like everyone already has HL1
-
Halo. ;) Veicles, Pixle Shaders **** like that.
uT2003 would be better for multie tho.
-
UT2K3, importing Models is easier, UnrealEd2 is brilliant, you have a high level of control over the AI of each NPC, it can handle massive numbers of polys without slowdown on a surprisingly wide range of machines. Ogg music support, LWO model support importing for both in-game meshes AND animated objects IIRC etc etc :)
Flipside :D

I do not (and will never) have UT2k3, UT2k4, Halflife or Halflife 2.
FPS are just soo....
-
if you've never played have Half-Life your missing out
Half-Life is soooo...

Whaaaat???
Who dares to say the mighty Half Life sucks?
It's pretty much the best game ever made!
-
I played half life. It bored the hell outta me after 30 seconds.
-
There were points in Halo where I thought I had wandered into Hlaf Life, I must admit.
-
thats true.
But the action in Halo > action in Half-Life anyday
-
I'd mod Return to Castle Wolfenstein.

Battlefield 1942
very mod orientated, extrodinary flight physics (even allows choppers), HUGE range of vehicles (planes, tanks, warships, subs, turret emplacemets - the works), battlecraft map editor (vaguely like fred), huge online gaming and modding communities, huge and very detailed maps, decent to good ai (depending on your settings on a per-game basis) and up to 64 players/bots in a match.
the only disadvantages would be that it's not really got missions, so it wouldn't be suitable for a FPS campaign, but absolutely ideal for multi play. :)
oh, and if your machine can handle it, sweet graphics :D

how about Doom ?:p
-
Cal of Duty. Cos it's the only FPS I'd play.

How can you mod for a game that has not been released yet?
-
Preparatory hi(ish)-poly modelling work, texture work, diagrams & plans for levels, script writing, etc. A lot of modding is actually converting stuff, so it's possible to get a fair degree of work done without having an engine to test it on.
Some people have, I believe, already started work on HL2 mods - although I'm guessing this would be before the release date got pushed back to march(?).
-
...not relased?
Well it's true, but the leak has already shown a lot.
BTW that could give you a genral idea - the rest is what aldo said.

Operation Flashpoint.

Hey there, Janos. Welcome to HLP. :)
:welcome:
I just can't refuse Halo at the moment. If the level design weren't so damn repetitive, it would be a faultless game. A mod, of course, could fix all that.

I played the ORIGINAL mod for Castle Wolfentien when it first came out over 15 years ago.. Castle SMURFENSTIEN! yes I was Smurf-Butcher Bob ;7
As for other FPS I only played the demos of HL, Unreal, and Q3 and was not that impressed...
However I AM waiting for the Q3 Gundam mod, that looks interesting... L8tr!
Plus I heard of a Gundam /BF1941 mod but their website is down...? are they still active?

Doom is easy to mod compared to a lot of other games, but the 2.5D engine and sprite-based graphics will turn a lot of people off unless you use JDoom (http://www.doomsdayhq.com), which is pretty buggy and runs slower than it should. JDoom can lock up at random on some computers, including mine.

 I mean wait for it to be released and then mod it.
-
If I would choose, I'd probably choose Doom 3.
-
Well, barring Max Payne 2 with bullet time moments on a Fenris's hull, I'd say wait for HL2.
