Title: FS2 Vastly Underrepresented In The Mod DataBase
Post by: karajorma on December 22, 2003, 07:57:40 am
I don't know how many of you have heard of this (http://www.moddb.com/) website but it's supposed to be a database of every mod for every moddable game. There are lots of lovely links to all kinds of Half life mods etc but when you type in Freespace this (http://mods.moddb.com/?mf=t&mf_gme=75) is what you find.

I've already added MindGames to the list (Click here to view) (http://mods.moddb.com/2546/?view=all) and I'll add TMA/SoR once I'm a little further along but I think that having more mods on the list can't help but raise the games profile a little amongst the sort of people who may have played FS2 but probably think that the community is dead.

I'm not proposing the site to replace HLP in any way but it's not a bad idea to have another site pimping our projects too. Unhosted projects may especially want to take notice.

I don't think we've ever been very good at any mod databases.

Why not change the cycle then? It only took me about an half an hour to pull the MG site on there together. Most of the work was already done for me after all.

I don't think putting stuff on there would help much though. I mean, I hadn't even heard of it. So how many people would actually go there and search for Freespace who aren't actually community members already like yourself?

Ummm...there's tons of OTHER people there, too. Yes, exactly, other people. As in more people for the community.

It's not ALL about just providing a place for current members to go view a mod. You CAN have new people looking at them, that aren't currently members of HLP or the community at large.

EDIT: BTW, Nova is my pet project :D :drevil:

Any news I post about MG would go up on the main page. That's certainly going to get us some exposure. If all the campaigns (including those who have actually released something like Inferno or TBP) put a page up we'd definately be noticed.

Checking the MG page I notice that I've been Modwatched by two names I don't recognise as belonging to people in the community so obviously some people noticed MG's appearance.

Putting in listings for Star Wars or TBP would mean that searches for those would point at FS2. Definately something worth having.

UT was the guy who pointed me at the place but I definately think it's worth pointing everyone else at it. :)

I just don;t have the time to do anything of this ilk justnow, much as I'd like to add CoW or some of my standalone mods.  I have too much stuff competing for my attention......

It's not like it takes a lot of work. You register the stuff, add a couple promo images, and you'r done. You could put a little thing that says "check page for updates" on it.

I think we should start a commitee or somethin dedicated to registering the stuff.

Even Quake 3 had FAR more mods released than listed on that website. I guess the other games have the same .... fewer mods posted there than as many exists.

And what's the harm of taking 30 minutes out of your incredibly busy schedule to register your mod, and provide a potentially much larger user database for both you and Freespace?

Is it REALLY such a big deal to register it?

Any publicity is good publicity for us.

With some exceptions we've had quite a nice influx of helpful talented newbies recently.

He didn't get here due to 'publicity' like that. He got here 'cause someone at VWBB *applies death stare* pointed him here :)

I can see plenty of people dropping in, and a lot of them have great potential. We need all the publicity we can get, and even 'troublesome' newbies have their benefits: they keep the other community members busy moderating and keeping flames to a minimum. And they're there to make things interesting and entertaining, of course. :p

Fresh blood = teh win :)

Those all have to have leaders, PhReAk, as registered members. So the leaders of the mods'll have to do it themselves.

I have registered Renegade Ressurgence there. :p

It should replace the loss of the lack of possibility to refresh the homepage. New screenshots can be found there.

With regard to newbies, it's worth being gentle and sticking with them, even the ones who seem like idiots. Many of them are young (as I was when I started this whole confounded business - I was 13!) and will advance quickly as they spend time in the community and learn from more mature members. The trick is, the more mature members are us. :p So be mature, but humble. It works.

You must have Inferno, you know?

So Inferno requires SCP or what? and how big is that file, never really paid too much attention to that MOD but I heard its nice.

Well it requires the inferno build, as one of their ships currently breaks the HTL map limit, but this should be fixed when the patch is released. Sol: A History, however, only needs the Inf Core.vp and the Inf EA.vp, so that should work with the SCP.

Hey now, don't mess with us noobles. Seriously, I've got to be one of your greenest members. :D  And See how much I've helped? Only two people (that I know of) can lay claim to spreading those much needed files to make HotUs' version run almost like the full version of FS2 are da man himself (Fractux) and me. ;)
Though my 256K upstream isn't all that much help, it's enough to get you what you need.
