Yep, it's done! Allmost! (no paths...I'll update the zip later once I do them...)
Enjoy!: - This is my Christmas present for you guys!
ORIONMK3.ZIP (//www.swooh.com/peon/Trashman/Misc/OrionMK3.zip)
And here are some pics of it in action:

Looks ok...hard to see in the screenies, but it's definately bigger now, so that's good. But take out the center bit that connects the two runways, makes it look funny.
-
I just finished the ship and you want me to re-do it jst coause you think the runway looks funny!?
NO WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
EDIT: It is bigger an far better armed. Tremble Shivans, Tremble!!!!
-
People noticed the runway in the FIRST thread you posted about this
I'm just saying, if you want it to be all it can be, you'd fix up the textures and those runways. Might I also suggest protruding those runways further forward, if you seperate them, and slanting the bottom, so that it looks like they're thrusting forward?
-
shes fat...
-
I like it, apart from one thing - there's a dockpoint on the front that's firing beams. I have an affinity for dockpoints, but only when they're using for docking ^_^
-
It's a beam cannon...I used the dockpoint texture for it...looks much cooler then the standard beam cannon.
I will not split the runways.
If you're so keen on it, I'll send you the TS scene/object and do with it what you want.
EDIT: Splitting the runways will cause more problems. You'll have gaps in which ships might hide, so you'll need even more turets to cover them. In the end, you'll end up with more turrets then the Collossus.
-
WOO! WHEE! BING! BONG!
-
You'd need two more turrets, one missle and one AA beam. The bottom is covered.
-
My 2 cents: Too blocky for an Orion Mk III.
-
I knew those running lights all around would look cool glowmapped. :)

About that... Look at the Mjolnir. It's firing point is a dockpoint texture, so it works here too.
-
Yes, but the Mjolnir doesn't really appeal to my dockpoint affinity either. And yes TrashMan, I know it's a beam cannon, otherwise I probably wouldn't have said it was firing beams...
I kind of liked the asymmetricality of the original Orion. I don't see quite why the GTVA would change it, even for a retrofit.
-
Same reason that everybody likes a design of a car, but for no appearant reason, the company making it makes them really ugly for a generation with no explanation why...
Or in other words: Because they can.
Maybe it's for a rogue faction with alot of money/resources, and a leader with an affinity for the Orion design?
-
Well it has two hangars now which means it can launch more fighters in the same time as an old Orion. Quite useful for emergency scrambles if you ask me.
-
Despite what everyone is saying, I like it. That connecting piece between runways could be used for any number of purposes, and you're all smart enough to come up with a few good ones. Job well done Trashman.
-
How difficult is it, to create a dockable runway? I have plans on using the main shuttle bay on the Galaxy class but I'll have to stray from canon size and enlarge her so FS2 fighters can fit inside.
-
Looks cool to me. So this uses the same maps and stuff as they have effects for in the SCP? Cause it might be usefull in the campaign I'm working on.

It's not completely symmetrical. Look closer.
And it isn't a retrofit, but a new class.
Two more turrets? Where? It's packed with turrets allready?
And as far as details go, I even made the debris with no lights (i.e.- the ship is destroyed, so allmost all lights are out on the debris...)
-
Trashman, I was stating that if you removed the center runway section, you would only need two more turrets to cover that section.
-
I hate the very idea behind that thing. That put aside, I guess it's well done.
-
if its a retro fit, why the hell would its size increase? (i assume you meant you increased the over all length and everything)
[edit]re-read youor post, my mistake[/edit]
Also the linked runways do look dumb, a simple chop will make it nicer.
As it goes its a good ship, but a few smaller refinements coupld make it a lot better.
So go on and humour us, edit it a bit.

I know it isn't, I've got the model. But still, I preferred the original.
So, this is a new class. Why are they using a semblance of a Great War era design, then? Surely there'd be more efficient ways to do it?
-
Nice!
Merry Christmas, Trashman. :D
-
They are using that design becoause I like the Orion!
Why do you all hate the connected runway. The mirrored Orion had it so (and the original Orion had it's own runway going a littel to the side). It can have it's uses - like holding lot's of fighters (remember the first nebula mission where you're launching from the Hecates wing?)
EDIT: Do to the fact that I re-installe Windows, I lost most of My ICQ buddies and all...so to those I have been in contact with - ICQ me!!!!
And Whitelight....If you can path the thing for me (I'm lazy and I haven't patheed anything for allmost a Year), so I can update the zip.....I'd be very thankfull
-
Has anyone actually downloaded it gavew it atry, or did all of you just comment the pics?
*I get the feeling that most of you did... I apologize if you didn't*
-
I've got the original 3D model before texturing, and with a little trouble I just opened the one you put in that zip (it's missing the textures with little blue lights, btw). It's good, yes, but most of that credit goes to Raa. The bottom of it is incredibly bland, and suffers the same problem as that Paladin battlecruiser you've done - there's a lot of surface that's unbroken by anything. The Orion just doesn't suit having two docking bays.
-
Argh! I knew I forgot something. As soon as I path the thing, I'll allso add that texture in the zip!
Where does it say that every surface on the ship mst be broken by toons of extrusion?
-

It doesn't, but all you need to do is compare the top of the model to the bottom. The top is interesting, Orion-ish, making something pretty out of the general slab that is an Orion. Then turn it over and look at the bottom - a huge percentage of that area is just a tile of a single texture. It looks very different.
Oh, and btw, good job on the Nodewars post. Well, apart from the fact that you seem to have named the female at the beginning 'Aquae'. That's my nation ^_^
-
Aquarillyane to be exact..Aquae is short... and if you look at the very beginning, that charachter is ther allmost from the start.
EDIT: I just looked at the bottom...it doesn't look bad...
Uhm...I'll see waht can be done about it..
*hates the idea of re PCSing the thing, but has notice two small faces with bad UV projection*
-

...ah. That's a bit of a problem. I guess since it was me who came up with it second, I'll have to go off and change my avatars, story posts, and OOB. That'll keep me busy ^_^
-
or you could both have the name, after all ones a nation and the other is a person, stranger things have happened.
Also it may be wiser to discuss such things on our boards (just trying to keep the big guys happy)
-
I've changed everything now anyway. It's less confusing. I brought it up here because I wanted to get Trashie's attention ^_^
-

Well, mainly because it looked dumb on the original, and this just compounds it.

Its called "visual interest". Big huge slabs of unbroken polys are boring to look upon. You either need really good texturing there that fools the eye into thinking there is more detail than there actually is, or you need to model some details.
-
Well I had time after the firsttest of the Paladin, so I re-did the Orion MK3 a bit.
Note the landing lights, the hangar entrances. And I allso fixed the bottom at Odyssey's request.
-
I think it's all right
it just seems a little too... i dunno, fat in the back
-
use the trim technique Raa used for the rest of the trim for the bit around the hanger. like this:
http://www.geocities.com/vasudanad/HangerSuggestion.txt
also note that with a single replace texture, with the standard runway lights, you can hugely improve the look of the trim. look at the lump visable on the right of that pic. putting that all over looks heaps better.
a high(er) res runway texture would probably help too.
-
I'm not here, but leave the runway as it is. It'll give something for the hangar crew to do. They can drive their little tug things from one hangar to the other during times of boredom.
-
How about narrowing the adjoining section of runway or extending the two main sections? The reason I don't like the runways joining much is cause it looks rather silly for a runway to suddenly turn 90 degrees at the end.
Even an extension of a couple of metres would stop that.
-
Or take the connecting section, extrude the top upwards to meet and join with the bottom of the oOrion's neck, and texture it with command post-esque windows or something.
Also, you can import the POF data from other POFs, so you shouldn't have to re-path it or anything.
-
i downloaded it when it loads up in fred i get a message sayin there are missing textures and the ship has spikes coming out of it, oh yeah it cause's modelview to crash as well
-
Just for the hell of it, and because I'm bored, I took Trashie's model and implemented a few suggestions, so he can have a visual reference as to what would look better. I deleted all the random stuff between the runways and reconstructed the edge polygons, so the runways aren't joined now. Also, I played around with the end outside corners of the runways, because they looked kinda silly so sharp.

(Image, 919x638 pixels (lvlshotted), 15.8KB GIF)
-
Much better.
-
I'm gonna try a few more texturing schemes around the hangarbay and I'll post pics, so you'll decide...
I LIKE THE RUNWAYS CONNECTED!
Extra landing space and all. Do you all forget the first nebula mission?
-
But nobody else likes it that way, really. It's not a very good sign when you start modding for yourself alone.
And, you plan to stick Herc2's (or anything else for that matter) in a teensy little bit of the Orion, sandwiched between two pieces of hull?. You seem to have forgotten that the AI in FS2 ain't all that good in stopping fighters hitting things, it'd just look dumb if you started stuff off from there.
But, each to their own. If you like it, we'll just have to won't we? :p
-
O.K. - I'll cahnge the runway A BIT...geez...everybody's a critic these days....:doubt:
Here are the missing thextures:

Leave it as it is! I like it!

That's why I suggested extending the runways themselves a little. The ship would look better and you'd still have that little piece of connecting runway you like so much. :)

Isn't that why you post stuff, for us to give our opinions on them?
-
Yes, but only positive ones.
-
Orion MK3b is almost done.
Anyone car to path it for me (and put a few glows and a docking path).
I kinda don't feel like it.
-
From this viewpoint, that definitely looks better.

Only Positive, then how do you improve something if, every one sucks up and says it looks good. IMO someone being truthful to me telling me how to change/edit something is far better than going "oh that looks nice"
3b, is starting to look better, i was just wondering is there any asymmetry left in the model? It looks like there may be some little bits, but what made the orion great for me was the obvious asymmetry of it, this (although it does look good) has lost a lot of that appeal.
Correct me if I’m wrong.
-
there is a difference between constructive critics and just plain critics.
The runway is an example. There are few thing that were wrong with my first version of the ship (the bottom, a few textures) and those I have fixed. There is nothing wrong with the runway however, but you all seem to have some organic distaste for it, alltough it's perfectly Orionish.
So, to appese the mases, I changed it a little..
now..ANYONE WANT TO PATH THIS FOR ME?
EDIT: One just can't appease you folks, can one?
-

It's got a small amount, I think. Like, some extruded parts along the top only extrude along the top and down one side, instead of both sides. And there's that funny little thingie stuck on the bottom of the runways. Other than that, though...
EDIT: Trashie, I'm trying to be as constructive as possible.
-
The left and the right side are different.
The hangarbay's are different in shape a bit and the sides of it's center section are way different..

I wasn't being serious.

Well now that you've split the runway like I suggested it looks much better.
-
could we get some better shots of 3b, i wanna have a good look at her :)

When did you come back? :p
*can't decide whether connected/unconnected is better*
-
Ahe...Is anyone willing to path it..please?
I don't want to do it...I'm a bit rusty when it comes to pathing...
As soon as the aths are done I'll put the new version for download

Yay!

If that's a genuine sentiment I'm quite worried.
-
Here's the new Orion Mk3b for download. Has paths for hagarbays, subsystems and 3 docks.
I didn't do turt paths or Glows (I don't know how to make glows...)
ORIONMK3b.ZIP (www.swooh.com/peon/Trashman/Misc/OrionMK3.zip)
The textures are not included since I allready posted them for download.

[q]If that's a genuine sentiment I'm quite worried.[/q]
The Christmas brandy was still in his hand, obviously! :p
On an on-topic note:
I like this ship, i really do.
-
Hmm...Am I beeing too nitpicky If I ask for this download to be moved among the highlights?
I mean, there are some old thing there that haven't changed for weeks..
Don't take me wrong, but I really think that this ship deserved it....
-
That's not nitpicky, that's... Aw, never mind ^_^
-
I know what you wanted to say, but if I recall right, the mirrored Orion was in the Higlights, and it's far less original and required far less work than what I did.
Am I really beeing pompous just coause I want to some one of my best works in the Highlights?
-
I dinnae say nothin'. Just make sure you give Raa credit too, he did a lot of the work.
-
I did... It's all in the readme (OrionMK3bTBL.txt to be exact)..
Say...do you know how to add glows?:D
-
i think the highlights have to be earnt not ask for, and to be honest IMO (just mine) its not to the stanards of highlights, sorry.
