Title: Already a familiar name
Post by: Raven2001 on December 29, 2003, 08:00:40 am
Okey, here's your christmas/new year present...

I present the Phaeton mk.2

I made it much more smooth than the first one of course, because I think that the GTVA terran ships are bound to become more organic looking. The cilinder thingy in the middle of the ship is meant to rotate.
The main hull plus the cilinder thingy make up to 5500 polys aprox.

The purpose of this destroyer is simple: jump in. high speed movement and side beam cannons make it a lethal weapon. The hangar bay only holds two fighter wings.
The mk2 however has something wich the original had not: a front big long range beam cannon...

Comments, and feedback below please :)

whoops, you already did..:drevil:

If it's a hit'n'run ship would it really have fighter bays ?
I think a heavy corvette would be more appropiate.

This may sound stupid, but make that...ahemm thing point forward - that would go better with the fins.

Befor somebody says the buzzword, go check Zone of the Enders, yes it can look like a d****** but if you put your hormones to rest you will be able to see the design other wise.

Hmm, I think it looks like an advanced Terran design.. which it apparently is, so.. :D

Glad you guys are liking it :) I really loved modelling this one

Updated pics, check the first post, the beauty is textured :)

Megatsu has a point well made about the hit and run thing... so I'll change it a bit, take out the vertical stuff out of the way and it will become a frigate... the fighter bay will stay however, but again, it is a small one that only holds two wings of fighters (1 wing of bombers as option...).
I'll keep the current design however, and it will stay a destroyer... story fluff is a retrofit of the frigate, very rare (only 2 or 3 built) used by GTVI/SOC. It will have the same characteristics as the frigate, except for a bigger hangar, two more side beam cannons, and a bit more fighter care weapons...

Holy living FUCK! Not very FS-like at all, but really cool. Are you going to release it? it's not a present if we can't have it.:p

Seeing how ugly the FS capships are, it's not a bad thing.

Lol, you can see how Raven is proud of his ship :D

But really, those FS maps... they're really too random, they make anything mapped with them look like a big mess. All those plates put randomly, they don't make any sense. Raven, you would gain a lot of spending some time making a small set of textures of your own design, and not use those... things.

Oh yes I am proud!! :D Pride is something I have to spare and to sell around, and still I would have a lot of it :P

Raven, you really need to start creating your own textures from scratch. Why?

You're  bloody genius, that's why. Your designs are consistently some of the best I've seen, right up there with Venom and Bob. If you can get do good custom texturing, etc, you'd be a natural for a game house.

Oh yeah, btw: bloody excellent ship. :)

Well, thanks for the warm comment :)

I'd love to be able to make textures... at least I would have my fighters textured, but for now I really suck at 2d design... and I still have much to learn at modelling.... :)

You don't have much left to learn concerning low poly modelling, if you ask me. Let's face it, last year, the little meshes you showed were... mmh... so-so to the best, if I remember correctly. Look where you've come in less than a year! Your capship designs are better than mine. You wanna see my first takes at mapping :p? It's time you put modelling on hold, and work on maps. Take one of your ships, and start making custom maps. Simple ones, but the whole set for that ship. Then you're gonna want to refine them, once you've had a good general look of the whole, custom mapped thing. And it won't take long before you take the grasp, trust me.

I could probably reskin that ship to look much better.

As much as I generally dislike organic terran ships, and as much as I dislike needless things like wings and rotating subsystems...

:eek2:

I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THIS IN GAME!

In other words... GOOD WORK!

As always Raven, superb. But I wonder what happened to the 2 "nose fins" so common to your designs, I think they would fit nicely here to balance the ship (heavy ass-end, light front-end).

Its times like these that I wish I had a Seal of Approval.

Well, I promised you a real present:

The GTD Sparta (the skinned carrier) will probably be used for CIM

Have fun with it, and happy new year :)

I figured as soon as I saw you reworking some, that you'd not want them done, but I'm still a procrastinator... :blah:

I don't really like the fins on the back, they look out of place...
