Title: Disabling Ports

Can someone tell me how to disable some of the ports on my computer???  Thank!  (like 6112 (i think)).

I'm under the assumption that you are using Windows. If that's the case then I would think it's just as simple as disabling them in your device manager.

Listing your OS would definitely be helpful.

He's not talking about device ports like the USB port, serial port. He's talking about network ports.

addendum:  A firewall can close off ports, though you probably should keep programs from listening on ports you don't want them to be listening on. That is, disable unnecessary network services (IIS for example).

Yes I need to disable some of my network ports.  BTW  I'm running Windows XP.

Google threw up: http://www.qsl.net/vk2jtp/xpfirewall.htm for brief instructions on using the XP firewall. I think you should be able to just use 6112 when they use 5200 and make sure that the checkbox is cleared in the services tab.  Otherwise something like Zonealarm will sort out all your ports in one go - search on http://download.com, the Pro version costs but the normal one's free.

Something important to remember: the XP firewall won't block outbound packets. It'll work fine if you want to stop another machine from connecting to port 6112 on yours. If it's the other way round, you'll need to use Zonealarm (or any of the other personal firewalls around).  

Someone kick me if I've got that wrong. :)

Does the walkthrough thing you gave me allow me to host on a game such as Warcraft???

It should do. But I found http://www.blizzard.com/support/?id=mdt0445p through Odyssey's link. It has the specific ports you need to open for various Battle.net games.

There's also a link to a page that has much clearer instructions on configuring XP's firewall.
