I tried to install a game based on the movie The Italian Job (the original movie, not the crappy new one) on my PC, but the installer suddenly bombed, crashing my computer. When I rebooted I discovered that it had corrupted my copy of Windows 98 (it lasted nine months without a reformat, a long time for a gaming PC)! I managed to copy over my Starforce Mod directory in DOS to my second hard drive, but DOS ignores subdirectories and long filenames, dumping everything into one directory and cutting short the filenames (D:\sfback\fight~43.pcx). Fortunately, everything is there, just not in a usable form. I'll salvage my table files, and some of my custom textures and effects, and download and remake everything else.
Currently, what I can use is:
Tables
Erigonean cap textures
Some weapon effects
INF core vp (I didn't know what I would need from the VP when I started making Starforce in July, so I grabbed the whole thing)
INF EA vp (ditto)
First mission
Custom stuff that needs to be remade:
Model reskins (tons of them)
Custom glowmaps (Khepri, Talon, Phoenix, 158th Kiev textures, Dark Breed ships, Erigonean textures)
Custom shinemaps (I may do away with shinemaps and recommend that Starforce be run with -nospec on)
Music converted from MIDI and MOD format (should be easy enough to convert them to WAV again)
Slowed-down LRed sounds for the main cannons of the Microsol Consortium dreadnaught (easy to redo)
I estimate that downloading, redoing, and assembling all the necessary stuff will take two months. Better back up the thing every week or two from now on...:sigh:

Huh? It would take you less than a day to sort that lot out. Much less time than remaking everything surely.
Also try using a file recovery program. This one is pretty good. http://download.com.com/3000-2248-10118664.html?tag=lst-0-1

I have to download a hell of a lot of mods and utilities as well, and then grab the media vp, remake my engine glow effects, and fit that into a schedule dominated by work, reinstalling many of my old apps and games, running Windows Update so my OS isn't filled with security holes and I can install PSP8, watching some of my new DVDs, and playing FS1. The situation isn't as bleak as I first thought, though.

Yeah the good old days of Dos 4.00, thats when pc`s were user-hostile :D :D

Actually, Windows 98 uses MS-DOS 7, but whatever.
