I was looking at the "One year ago today" section on the main page, and found Mik's Herc 1 model thread. All of the images were gone, except for this one:

Well? It looks like it'll work with HT&L... Where is it? Mik! Speak up! :p

IIRC it was around 50,000 polys so I don't think it would work with HT&L after all.

some cropping n you will be fine ... well something like that anyway.

it would work, but you'd only be abe to have two or three of them on screen and absolootly nothing else

If you tone it down to ~ 3000-5000 polygons it'll work fine :)

That would probably require a complete rebuild.

Well, get rid of the venty things for starters. That'll really do the trick, methinks.

Now someone just needs to get a real picure so i can see what the whole thing looks like. But from what I see it's awesome.

Something could be done with the cockpit to show that there are actually two person inside - this would give a better sense of size, since these ships are huge.

Than the cockpit is huge - or all the Lifesupport is actually stuffed under the plexi dome.

No: the ingame model is just completly off, scale-wise: look at the herc in the FS2 intro.

all the scales are off, fighters are too big and caps are too small, but we knew this already.

What I mean is that in the intro, the Herc is scalled right.

The scales of the models are all right - the in-game render is not.
As Sandwich found out everything is 1/20 of what they are supposed to be.
BTW all of the crafts in FS are huge - check the Depth of Field thread where Sandwich compared a tank to a Myrmidon - those are the sizes.
For once I think those scales are right - you have to stuff a fusion reactor and a very powerful engine along with a subspace engine into a fighter - you need a lot of space.

if everything in the universe was shrunken to 1/20th it's size, then there would be no difference.

Nay - that's 'cause all the speeds in the game are apropiat - it would be as if you travelled 20 times faster BTW if your eye hadn't changed everything would look smaller.

Yeah, I know about the scale thing, but still, scale-wise, the herc is too large. No way a thing like this is more than 20 meters long ( 25 with thrusters ). The F16 is something like 14 meters long. Put them side to side...

I go to Didnyland for a few days and people find the oddest things.
I still have the model, and its still incomplete. The model is around 31k triangles, or about 13k non-tripled polys.
It could easily be turned into a game model by killing off a lot of details that you can't see in that picture-- mainly some extraneous silliness in the aft thrusters. The easiest thing to do would be to remodel it mostly from scratch. I still have the subobjects that it was built from so it wouldn't be hard to use them as guides.
The most important thing though, would be fixing the cockpit. there are really really bad things goin on there that you just can't see in this version of the model.
