Okay, I do not understand anything at all about the background editor's nebula thinking. No matter what I do, I cannot get the background to be in front of my ship, its always behind, regardless of what I do. Pitch, bank, maximum setting minimum setting, I always get a black field in the area where most of the mission takes place. Am I just inept at this or is there something I don't know?
Also, it has been pointed out to me in other posts that I haven't actually made a hello/welcome post, so here it is; yes I'm new, I just got FS2 and beat it but know nothing about FRED 2, and am in desperate need of wisdom.

Maximum is 360, and depending on where you start that's behind you. Minimum is 0, and depending on where you start that's behind you. 180 is in front of you if, in the previous settings, it was behind you.

To determine where your background will show up, do the following.
Take the pitch of your background, and 'imagine' applying the same pitch to a ship at coordinates {0,0,0}. Then, take the heading of the background, and 'imagine' applying the same heading to the same ship at coordinates {0,0,0}. The ship should now be pointing at your background.
Note that the heading and pitch values for ships are done in radians, while those of backgrounds is done in degrees. You'll have to do some conversions to figure out how much to change the ship's pitch and heading values.
To make it more confusing, the heading value for backgrounds increases as one goes counterclockwise. However, this is not true for the heading value for ships, which increase as one goes clockwise. The same disparity is true for pitch values, so be careful!

Which way do you face during the mission? If you are going in the same direction that Alpha 1 faces by default in FRED (I usually never move the player ship, but place the other ships around it, so this applies to many of my missions), the nebula should be placed somewhere near 0,0,0.

I'm facing the opposite way.

In that case, place the background at {0,0,180}.

Check out Sandwich's sig. (do a members search)
Great if you find backgrounds a pain in the ass.
