This isn't a hoax (http://tarr.uspto.gov/servlet/tarr?regser=serial&entry=75502288), either. :-(

Oh dear....

what the.....??

oh, :-(

If they go bust they won't have the money to sue anyone. If this isn't a hoax they've just alienated their entire market with this stupid stunt anyway.
Besides I use the simpler : ( smiley anyway so I don't much care :)

:-(
sue me!

I can at least state that manufacturing Frownies(tm) requires a computer, a word processor, and of course, a human being. Like many companies that employ thousands and have as many computers on their network, we have been getting by with only one registered copy of Microsoft Word shared by all. Our stinginess has come back to haunt us, since it now precludes us from assigning more than one person to the task of manufacturing Frownies(tm) at time. Since our sole legal copy of Word is registered to the company proofreader, Dane Burke, he has been given the initial responsibility for manufacturing Frownies(tm).
"Unfortunately, in addition to having the sole legal copy of Microsoft Word, Dane also has acute dyslexia. I think it goes without saying that this has led to something of a suboptimal manufacturing process, with a defect-yield comparable to that of Plasma-display manufacturing. For every 100 Frownies(tm) that roll off the assembly line, about 30 end up being defective. Most commonly, they are missing a nose. Often, they end with a closed-parenthesis instead of an open one, resulting a "Smiley". Because of the potential for an improperly constructed Frowny(tm) to miscommunicate one's disposition, all defective ones are immediately destroyed.

Hey, the guy was innovative. The emoticon fits with his name, I think.
But this has to be the most idiotic news I have ever heard. How can the guy to sue EVERYONE that uses that name. Even if his business is prosperous, how the hell is he going to pay for 7 million court battles? The court will absolutely throw this out... at least the 7 million people hope so.

I get the feeling that even if him getting the trade mark is correct the law suits bit is a hoax.
-
That's nothing, wait till :D or :) are trademarks, then you will see!!!!
P.S.
Could I make a trademark out of the word/letter "a"?

Dear God, the world is filling up with knobs.
The can go ahead and try to sue me if they like, since they have written no code whatsoever, and the symbols are available on every keyboard on the planet, It would be interesting to see them try.
EDIT : If you are concerned, use a different font, you can write Pepsi or Cola as much as you like as long as you don't use their font ;)

Hehe, my bro showed me the website a few weeks ago.
I love the concept. Now all those cubicle monkeys can have something better to put up on their walls than the senseless motivational posters that have cropped up in recent years.
"Always remeber that you are unique, just like everyone else"

Yeah, he can try and sue me in Finland. Muahahahahaha. And I got the right to blow his brains out if he even tries in my country, I jsut drink a few beers, take out a shotgun and shoot him. Under the influence, I do therapy, minimum sentence for first time offender, ½ year either in low secure jail or house arrest. Then I get out. Aah...:D

Might have missed something in the report, but what does this company actually do? Assuming it's real it must do something other than sue people over trademarks...

They make Demotivational work, a stab at all of those motivational posters and stuff you've probably seen. It's actually kinda funny. Too bad they had to sink this low.

If that's the case something tells me this may be taken a wee bit tongue in cheek.

Eat me

Yeah. It's obviously a publicity stunt.
"The outcry of our trademarking of the frowny emoticon has been deafening and from every corner of the globe. At first, I was inclined to pay little attention to the matter, since the earliest overseas complaints were from France and they’ll complain about anything. But soon their cries were joined by complaints from the less whine-prone nations of Germany and Sweden. Not long thereafter, even the imperturbable citizens of Russia were writing agonized emails, begging me not to outlaw the use of the frowny symbol in email.
I can't imagine anyone serious writing that.

Did anyone even bother to look at the date?
January 2nd, 2001

To all the people not getting it: This is satire. Read the disclaimer at the bottom.
-
It's not satire, what ever it may claim to be
Oh well. Sarnie gets duped again *runs*
-
*sigh*
Bloody humorless, the lot of you.
Incidentially, I just copyrighted the word "hard" for use on my porn database. You lot owe me ten thousand back royalties, or I take you to court.
Not kidding. Pay the **** up.

No, it's satire alright. It's not a hoax, though.
-
Maybe satire is something different in the US. Over here it generally involves humour.
-
It's spiteful sarcasm in it's purest form.
-
man I wish I would have gotten sued like this, I could use the settlement from the violation of privacy suet
-
"Violation of privacy suit"?
-
Suet. It tastes better.
-
Ah. I see.
A violation suet sounds really unappealing, though. Tasty or no. Would you make that with the leftovers from cooking a rape cake?
