What good does it do to look at a star without a filter of some kind if you're actually looking at the star?

Like a jet stream outwards with a curve, well sort of because of rotation and other factors its not straight. An example (http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/bestofsoho/EIT99promcloseG.gif) from SOHO (http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/)

and adding some lighting around the sun would make it more realistic

Much better!

But I think less red patches would make it look more realistic?  I don't know though.

thats a vast improvement.
You may want to jack up the smothing. The edges are fairly pronounced.

not to offend or anything, but i think the colours contrast a bit too much; can you kinda blend them a bit? (i wouldn't know how, im not a computer artist...) anyway it's still a really huge improvement from that first one you posted so obviously, unlike me, you're more of a perfectionist... :) (that's mostly a good thing)

I dunno, if it's any less contrasted, the definition will start to be wasted. Besides, shots of our own Sun show up with far more contrast. It all depends on the filter. I like what you've done so far, ToXuC - welcome to HLP, btw. ;)

use a higher-poly sun.  It's pretty angular ATM.

for some reason the corona looks larger in the yellow one. probably one of those illusive colour things.
