Ive heard many stories of the hard drive break down after a year or some other compartment within the system breaking down do any of you guy have an Xbox? Is it worth it? And have you expierienced any problems with it?
-
no console is worth any kind of money. period.
-
I have an XBox, no problems here, yet.
I also have PS2. Crapped out after a year. Lousy DVD laser burns out, and it costs as much as a new unit to replace.
-
I almost agree. I did buy a Playstation 2 when they came out, but mainly for the fact that it could play DVDs. Now... It just sits there. Collecting dust. Every now and then I'll play a game I borrowed from a friend, but other than that. Its just an ornament. As for the X-Box, a big ornament. I usually think of it this way, there is no game on any console that is better than a PC game. Apart from perhaps Squaresoft games.
-
I have one. no problems and I've had mine since last christmas.
I love it:)

£79 for a GameCube. Hell, I payed £90 for one, and the only games I have are F-Zero and Zelda.
The Billbox and PS2 are not gaming platforms, they're fashion accessories. If you're actuallt interested in playing games, Nintendo is your friend
-
It really comes down to the games.
If you like platformers, big name sports titles and console-style RPGs then a cosole is worth it, for a large portion of the population, this is pretty acurate.
If you favor Flight Sims, RTS, TBS, or Shooters, then PCs are the way to go.
The best way to find out if it's worth it for you is find a place that will rent you one for a week or something and try various games for the console. You'll know after a week whether you want to lay down 150 bones for one of your own.

You've never played a Kungfu Chaos 4 players game, have you? :D

Thanks for the assistance :D

Don't talk out your arse mate. I have an Xbox and a Gamecube and I'm sorry but the Xbox has way more playtime than the GC and this is spoken without bias but I find that the Xbox has better games for the most part because I'm not interested in playing sequels to Nintendo's past glories.
What Nintendo need to do is get more third party developers on board like Silicon Knights (Eternal Darkness) and Retro Studios. Plus the lack of online gaming on the Gamecube also pushes it down in my opinion because there's nothing quite like playing a lag and cheat free (for the most part) game with voice communication.
As for the boxes reliability, had mine nearly two years and aside from an occasional disk read error I don't have any problems.

But to japanese people, everything looks bigger :p
I dunno about the gamecube, but what I know is that the Xbox has a lot of excellent games. That's what is important, I believe?

Exactly, I think that point seems to get lost. It's nice to know there are people that still see this.
I mean, a good games a good game, I don't give a **** what platform it's on. I'd rather have every good game experience that I can get rather than limit my choices but ::shrugs:: I dunno, I guess not all people are the same.

Speaking from experience I can tell you now, it's not very good as a coffee table. You can balance plates on it but cups are far too unstable. The irony of course is that (aside from being a top loading device) the GC is far more suitable for cups.
:)

I've got both the Xbox and PS2,....so far I enjoy both a great deal. We're actually looking into getting a Gamecube soon,...only because too many games are single platform only. And while PCs are by far the best,... that's only when the game also comes out on PC,....and then providing you have the system to handle it, don't have to fight through 300+ patches to get bugs out, etc. ;)
Don't get me wrong,..I prefer PCs if only for the MODing factor, given enough time any good game gets ripped open and modded, but at the same time there's alot of cool games that my system just can't run at peek, or at all, so $150 for a console to play those same games is easier at the moment than paying $500 + to upgrade my PC system.
-
To reduce the risk of the hard drive in an X-Box breaking down or exploding, you can put your own hard drive in it. You can get say, an 80gig hard drive and a mod chip to store all your games on. I saw it on TechTV.
-
Since you didn't ask about console games vs. PCs, I'll just put in a little STFU to the ****wits telling you Consoles aren't worth it. If you want a console, obviously, you think its worth it.
I've got an Gamecube and a PS2. While I love it, my PS2 barely gets any play anymore. My Gamecube gets all the new games (because its got games my wife likes too). If I was sitting here picking consoles NOW and I didn't already have one, I'd get a GameCube. But to cover the entire spectrum, I think I'd buy an Xbox too and leave the PS2 on the shelf. So yeah, an Xbox is worth it.
-
I have a Gamecube + PS2. I love the PS2 (the gamecube slightly less so), it has a bunch of games of the kind I like (RPGs, SRPGs, adventure). Xbox is highly lacking in these genres. In the end it's a matter of personal preference.
Unfortunately the PS2 has some dvd laser problems as it gets older (got mine back in 2000). I've noticed that after 4 years it's having read problems. There is a solution to this. You can stand it up (on its "side"), this is a temporary fix. (Also try DVD lens cleaner disks) Eventually that solution won't work, and at that point you have to take the PS2 apart and do some fixing.

I don't trust techTV :wtf:
Nother question are the graphics okay the only reason I'm thinking about buying one is only because my computer can't support the newer games that are out. I'll probably use the Xbox as a secondary system. I still like RTS games and Freespace 1 & 2 :D
note: not worth trying to upgrade system already upgraded to the max, no way I'll bother with buying a new motherboard.
:ick
-
The graphics kick ass. PLay HALO, and that's not even everything it can do...
-
Sony will fix your PS2 if it breaks for only the cost of shipping(assuming you haven't opened the console up already). Warranty is a non-issue here. Just call 'em and they'll take care of it.

I interested in Need for Speed Underground. If I bought it for my computer it would be a slide show.
*but wait! that's not all! it can wash your car feed your pets get rid of your pesky neighboors and has a secret button for overriding nukes. *
-
Like the XBox, don't like the GC so much. Don't care about the PS2, it's old hat now anyway. ;)
Definitely worth buying one if you want to have some fun for a lot less cost than building a top PC.
-
Well, frankly, I think any of the current consoles are worth the money. Between the three of them however, the Xbox seems to have the least amount of exclusives. If you're looking for the widest selection, PlayStation2 is the way to go. I'm sure the box has plenty of good games all to itself though.
As far as graphics go, I'm pretty sure that the Xbox is superior to the other two consoles in terms of hardware. Ultimately however, it really depends more on the individual games.
-
I got all three of the systems, and Gamecube by FAR gets all of the playing time. The games on it are just so much better than any other console. Especially Mario Kart: Double Dash, it's more fun than a barrel of monkeys!
-
The best platform for games is the PC. :p
-
If you have tons of money to spend on a high-end machine of course.
-
I had the opportunity to compare all 3 platforms running Soul Caliber 2 the other day (one of the better fighting games for the systems). The X-Box came out on top in terms of sound and picture quality. With that thing, size does matter. You can just plain fit more hardware in the thing. The GC isnt even half the size of the Box. The Cube's picture is much fuzzier than the Box. That and it needs a power brick, which I hate. The Box has an internal adapter. As for games, its a matter of preference. In my opinion, the Box has most of the good titles now. Simply because MS can just buy whatever the hell they want.
-
The GC is powered by ATI? My yonger brother has the system hooked up I saw on the outer case. How can the GC which has fuzzy graphics be powered by ATI?
-
X-Box uses a custom nVidia chip.
-
Will there be another version of the Xbox out, which has an updated graphic chip and processor? something that goes above the megahertz? maybe 1.5 gig processor. maybe more RAM to.
-
Probably if they catch wind of Nintendo or Sony making a new platform. It hasnt been long enough really. Theres usually a 4 or 5 year gap between new systems. That is about how long it took Nintendo to release the GC after the 64 iirc.
-
The Xbox 2 is planned, it won't be a pc in a black and green box though.
I should note that it is not size that makes the Xbox hardware powerful. In fact, all that space that it takes up is a waste. You can create a powerful gaming console without all the multipurpose clutter of a PC architecture.
-
To put it plain and simple, I would say yes, it's worth it. I have had hour after hour of enjoyment on an Xbox, on one game alone (that being Halo - and I typically hate FPS games, so that's quite an achievement for me). In the grand scheme of things it is all frivolity, you could spend the money better on a hundred other things. But that's not the point here, is it? ;)

That's my pb too, I wanted to play console RPG, and, well, there's none on the Xbox. Well, there WAS none :p Sudeki should be released this month, and Fable ( you gotta see this one, concept-wise and visual-wise, it's something else ) should be due soon enough now :)
-
You can't really accurately judge a console on a certain set of games. If there's a distinct lack of a certain genre on a certain console, that could certainly be an important factor.
-
Have all consoles. Love my Xbox. Worth it if you like the game it has available.
-
I say go get the console with the games that most strike your interest. Sure Xbox can move more polys but that's a non issue as far as I'm concerned. If moving polys for the sake of moving polys was fun then it wouldn't be gaming. *shrugs*
If I were going to buy a console I'd get a GC, it has more of the games that I like, at a higher quality than any of the other two consoles.
But I've put my gaming life on hold until HalfLife2 is released in april (supposedly) until then the only thing I'm doing is saving cash for a monster GFX card. :)

-
XBox is great. I've played/seen other games on consoles/PC that look far better on XBox. Splinter Cell in particular.
-
This is the thing with consoles. Cost.
MY current computer cant run KotOR.
Well, it could, but not well.
Anyway. Cost me at least 1000 to upgrade my PC (RAM, video, cpu), or 350 for an X-Box + KotOR. And it can run many other games I love. MechAssault, Halo, Crimson Skies 2, NHL 2004, Metal Gear Solid 2, Project Gotham 2, plus more I cant afford right now.

Foolish, brand-chasing mortal. Prior to the Radeons above 9600, ATI had never made a good graphics chipset.
The chipset in the GameCube, however, is NOT fuzzy and is indeed pretty damn good. It also wasn't designed or built by ATI. It was designed and built by a company that ATI bought.
Don't buy a console based on graphics. Buy it based on whether or not it has games you like.

(NB: nvidia is wrongly given as the 'flipper' developer at one point.... directly above a bloody great big diagram saying 'ATI FLIPPER GPU' on it. :) )
Developer of the flipper was ArtX.
-
I got a PS2 for Christmas, way better buy and more games than an Xbox.
Plus, the controls are easier (not because of the size, tho)
-
well PS2,GC,Xbox all have great games it's kinda hard to choose
-
I have a GameCube...hard to find good appealing games but some of the stuff we have is REALLY good. Looking into Mario Kart Double Dash. We'll see.
-
X-Box has HALO, and will soon have STALKER and that nifty upgrade of Conker's Bad Fur Day.
If you must waste your money, that'd be the closest to a good investment I can think of.
Though if you're trying to waste your money, I suppose that's precisely what you're not looking for... ah well.
-
What does X-Box have besides Halo???? Nothing. What does Gamecube have, only the best games on the market out there. Get yourself a gamecube, best 100 bucks you'll ever spend.
-
Crimson Skies, GTA3, Morrowind, several quadrillion nice racing games, Prince of Persia, and a significant chunk of the games that are out for PC.
Yep, sure sounds like nothing to me.

You. Fool.
KotOR, Crimson Skies 2, MechAssault, Metal Gear Solid 2, Project Gotham 1 & 2, Prince of Persia, Legacy of Kain: Defiance, every EA Sports game, Halo 2 in a few months, Deus Ex 2, Arx Fatalis, XIII, Counterstrike, Alter Echo, Armed & Dangerous, Battlestar Galactica, Bloody Roar Extreme... do you want me to keep going?
-
Way I see it, it's still not worth a buy, but man, in three or four years when people start selling their Xboxes for like $5... wheeee!
-
Seriously, you can't really enumerate specific, acclaimed titles in defense of a console. On that same note, it's unfair, and quite unfounded to say that any one console has no good games. Keep in mind that this is all very subjective. You have to base such arguments on facts or postulates.
-
Um, why not? What else are you supposed to buy a console for? Nifty little cheap plastic gadgets that plug into it? Number of pieces it shatters into when you drop it from a distance? Glory hole support?
This is like that stupid defense of Linux where proponents try to claim that it doesn't matter that you can't run ****-all on most versions because it's otherwise a very nice operating system. Really, come now.
-
Seeing as how each console has literally hundreds of games, the odds of there being no good games for any console are exceedingly slim. Most people who make this claim haven't played a single console's library of games in its entirety.
However, a simple enumeration of acclaimed games for a console is simply far too subjective to carry any real weight. Further, these days, many mainstream titles are making their way to multiple consoles. You can list games that you think are good, and someone can respond merely by saying "I think all of those games suck," and there would be absolutely nothing wrong with that response if they have actually played those games. They can also mention that these games are on their favored console, if that is the case.
-
This is not about Linux take you complaints elsewhere. :mad2: Or else! :D
-
Frankly, I think the concepts of console war and console loyalism are some of the most asinine things to come from gaming. In the grand scheme of things, the differences between consoles aren't nearly as great as people make them out to be. This is becoming even more true now that many mainstream games are being released for multiple consoles.
I think people develop fanboyism because of attachments to certain games for a particular console, and derive their opinion of the console from these certain games. For a Sony fanboy, this may be a Final Fantasy game, for a Nintendo loyalist, perhaps Mario. Currently I think the PlayStation2 is the best console simply because it has so many more games. I wouldn't mind owning an Xbox or a Gamecube as well, but I'm not exactly rich.
-
Neither am I :D
Is that a penny! *Jumps on the ground grabs penny but breaks his arm in the process*
-
You think asinine fanboyism is news? I don't think there's been one technical advance or offshoot that hasn't been viciously fought over by fanatical if sedentary mobs in the last ten years.
It's something to ride your ego on if you've got nothing else- "I may be a virgin at thirty, living in my mom's basement, working for minimum wage as a janitor, and balding, but Goddamnit, I've got a damn fine game system"- with varying degrees of severity. Hell, there's even become in trolling an entire near-Olympic-level sport of hunting down and picking fights with those whose self-esteem is so low as to provide only weak resistance.
But that's largely irrelevant, as I haven't seen this deal get genuinely heated yet here.
Yes, there are lots of games for the consoles, that's rather the point. But you can't exactly dismiss the specific games for each as irrelevant- on a console, it's entirely the point. We're not pitting an N64 against a Gamecube, here, what's in the box is gonna be besides the point 90% of the time- it's what you can run on it. And, by the very nature of consoles, you can only run games. So, you go for the console that has the most games that you, personally, want on it. Subjective, yes. But so's basically any rating of quality when it comes to games. I don't know exactly what you're looking for, here, some divine revelation that one console is Better in the absolute than any other? Have fun. Don't bother us about it.
The question of this thread, last I checked, was whether an X-Box was worth the buy (along with some niggling hardware problem that got disposed of rather quickly). That's about as subjective a call as you can get. I'd say, you got the money, buy me an Xbox. Others think other game systems are more worth the money. We're all giving our reasons why. They're all quite subjective and pretty silly to boot. Getting up on a high horse about some objective truth that just plain ain't there doesn't elevate the discussion or indeed further it in any other direction, though it does produce irritable semirants from my direction.
-
So the point is, is the Xbox worth byuing?
The Xbox will have ( the three pics are ingame screenshots, btw ):
-Halo2:
No need to introduce, I suppose.
-Ninja Gaiden:
... her, no, joking ( tho it's supposed to be on the dvd :D ) :p :
I've seen it running, it's darn cool, the guy is running on the walls jumping to the roof, throwing his shurikens, etc. And that screenshot really doesn't give it justice.
-and Fable ( Peter Mollineux? since big names seem to make people's days...):
A RPG, you start as a kid, and then you do what you want ( like most Bullfrog/Lionhead's games, you might say ). You can be good or bad, marry, etc. Scars stay on your character, if you achieve physical feats, your body becomes more muscular, if you live by night, you'll have a bleach skin, etc. The fights in the videos look quite violent, too.
The other consoles won't. Nough said :p
(There's also my little favourite outsider, Sudeki, but that's not one of the big names.)
-
my games i will buy for Xbox are (this year
Halo2
Sudeki
Fable
Ninja Gaiden
BC
etc
this is BC

Ahem.
Halo, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Project Gotham 1&2, Dead or Alive 3, Mechassault, Steel Battalion, Rallisport Challenge, Star wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Rainbow Six 3, Brute Force, Gunvalkyrie.
Care for me to continue? Those are just the best games I own, not counting cross platform games like Soul Calibur 2 or Colin McRae. Not even counting games like Crimson Skies or Top Spin which I've still yet to get or forthcoming games like BC, Fable and Halo 2 which are going to be THE console games of 2004 in my opinion.
I have a grand total of five GC games (though that's likely to improve soon).
-
>You count Gun Valkyrie in your best games? It's one of my "I could have spent my money more wisely" games...

I loved Gunvalkyrie but I admit the controls weren't the easiest to learn and it's incredibly difficult to play but I really enjoyed it. I get a perverse sense of satisfaction in trying to play games that are too hard until I get good enough to break them. :)
-
Lol :)
I hate games where I end up being stuck for now reason ( in the pit of don't remember what, you have that huge ball you try to reach jumping from pillaars to pillars, and then, no more pillars you can reach! WTF? I've tried everything, I've flown in that ridiculously small level for hours, and I always ended up stuck at the same place :doubt: )
There's one cool thing in GV, tho: the drive gun, it kicks some serious ass ( sound, visual, I've rarely felt that powerful when pulling a trigger, in any game :p )
-
Whoa, whoa, whoa, back it up, beep beep; calm down son. I am unduly sorry if my 'unorthodox' views on gaming have 'offended' you, and I would like to extend this apology to anyone else who feels the need to get so irrationally angry. I really hope you're not assuming that I just say things for the sake of being iconoclastic. If you don't like my opinions, then frankly, I really don't know what to say to you.
I have already stated that I believed the Xbox was worth the money. I'm not dismissing the popular games for certain consoles, I just don't think this is a good method of arguing, or 'giving reasons' as you call it:

I believe Halo is good, but not quite stellar, Prince of Persia is a multiplatform game, Defiance has gotten mixed reviews, I don't think Bloody Roar has ever aimed particularly high, and I think XIII and Counter-Strike are relatively bad shooters, but this is all besides the point.
I'm not sure what you think a simple enumeration of the acclaimed games for a particular console does. I highly doubt that someone sets out to buy a console with no idea of what games are on it. I don't see how the list of good games for one console would be more significantly convincing than the list of good games for another console. If the person was totally unfamiliar with all the games mentioned, neither one would be more convincing than the other. If they were familiar with most of the titles, then they'd probably already have their own pre-conceived notions of the quality of the games.
I honestly don't think it helps all that much to answer the question "Is Xbox worth it?" They're fantastic as recommendations once someone has decided to or has already made a purchase.
There may be some truth to your high horse accusation, but it's also pretty hypocritical coming from you.
-
I bought a GC 'cos it's the cheapest. Since then, I got a PS1 and SNES, and about a dozen of the top ganes, for less than that.
I toyed with gettin' a mega drive and N64 since then.
Consoles are best when you can get 'em cheap. As Seketh said, they are pretty frivilous (not sure about the spellin' there) My Communication teacher at school insisted on calling consoles "toys". Summs it up I 'spose. And I can't stand using a joy pad for FPS any more.
Hey, as Microsoft don't need Halo2 to sell X-Creates like the prequel, does this mean the PC will get a decent port ? Or will we haved to wait another 3 years ?

Since we're still waiting for a decent port for Halo the first on PC, I guess you have your answer :p

I gave up waiting.:p

The drive gun hurt my ears after a while but it was kickass, that level with the ball, absolute nightmare and they get harder, at a certain point you have to boost yourself over to the canyon wall at the side and climb to a higher floaty thing. Took me ages to work out and even longer to do, then you get into the ball, have to fight a huge boss only to die and restart the level. One of the few times I felt like crying. The satisfaction when I did it though, it was one of those thing you'll always remember in your gaming history.
-
Oh, and now the whole "they hate me 'cos I'm different" bit. Dandy.
Anyway. Whatever. There's a chance of a simple miscommunication, but honestly from your reaction it sounds more like you're uncomfortable with the terms I cached what you're doing in more than have any disagreement with the general idea. You still haven't even given a vague idea of what you think would constitute reason to buy a console, you've just stated over and over that you think all the consoles have nice games, which is not exactly something that needed pointing out in the first place. The existence of specific desirable games isn't always known (hell, I still don't know what all's on any of the three systems, just the most popular ones and only recently those at that)- the fact that all three at the very least don't suck so bad they dropped out of the running is kind of a given. Since games in general are assumedly a level playing field (they're not, really, but since that's dealing in generalizations it's a waste of time to press the point anyway), and hardware, stability, and features are all similar or complementary between the big three, when comparing the consoles you're basically stuck with comparing specific games. And it's fine if you think they're all the same- that's very nice for you, doesn't really further anything in a discussion about which is a preferable system, but then again there's no real demand for productivity here. However, there's no need to repeat yourself over and over and over again, and given your attitude in doing it it sure as hell looks like a half-assed attempt to condescend. Get to the point or be done wit' ye.
VeNico: What was wrong with the HALO port? First I heard it sucked...
-
I didn't think a simple forum question would turn into a long discussion :p
-
Attitude? Frankly, I'm wasn't trying to condescend at all, at least not until your relatively long post. I'm sorry if this alleged "they hate me 'cos I'm different" attitude bothers you; I wasn't expecting such patronizing replies over gaming consoles.
Now last time I checked, the question was "Is Xbox worth it?" not "What are you favorite games for your favorite consoles?". Considering how the former is phrased, I think it would have something to do with the value provided by a console in proportion to its price tag. If that is indeed the case, then yes, I think the Xbox is worth it. Since you feel the need to refer to the original question, it's worth noting that it says nothing about which is the preferable console. I'm sorry if it's counter-productive for me to say this, but I honestly don't think that any one console is significantly better than the other. If I absolutely had to pick, I would say the PlayStation2 is the best.

I've got a Cube with Zelda, Rogue Squadron 2 and 3, MK:DD, Soul Calibur 2, Bloody Roar, XG3, THPS4, Enter the Matrix, and UNIVERSAL STUDIOS THEME PARK ADVENTURE!!!!! (my bro bought that one seriously)
edit: seeing bbobb's post, the only decent game for xbox is halo and the controller is crap, so it isn't

The only reason I'm considering buying a XBox is becuase I can't find a cheap enough computer. I've looked everywhere but no such luck. Wouldn't you know it no one sell computer for below $200 :D I'm just trying to find a system that has a case a power supply and a motherboard that can support 4X - 8X AGP and has a descent processor and a few sticks of RAM, plus CDrom and a Hard Drive only need 20 gigs *should have asked earlier*
*prepares to shot himself in the head*

The specs to make this thing run.
Didn't say it sucked. The game itself is the same. Well I suppose.

Doesn't play the same to me, I like Halo with the controller as daft as that seems.

Nico: Well thbbbt to you and all you other slow-processor types, then. :p Glad to hear it isn't ****ed up or something, I'm rather looking forward to getting it.

So, why don't you upgrade? If you buy, say, a cheap KT-400, Athlon 1800+ and a stick of ram that comes out to about $140. Add in a Radeon 9000 and that's $200. That should be a decently comfortable system.

Ps2 has Pro Evo 3*. That's why i bought it.
Ok, so it's on the PC as well now. But can you take it into the living room and sit on the couch in front of a 28 inch telly on the PC?

Why? Coz I have the Xbox version. I have no problem finding 3 friends to play on a console, and as I'll never mod Halo, the PC version doesn't have much value to me.
Oh, and I have a radeon 9700 :p ( so what if it slowed down by the rest of my rig? :D ). But if I buy a new CPU, I'll most likely need to buy a new mobo as well and I really don't want to go into PC modding again right now.
Besides, I don't want to go into PC modding ever again, so I'll buy a complete thing, next time.

I was recommending the upgrade to Falcon. :p

I alreday have a Radeon 9000 so there is no proplems there and have some ram I guess I'll just buy a new motherboard.
Saw some cheap combos (motherboard+processor) at pricewatch.
So long 450 Amd 3dnow piece o' crap you may have been something but now? You will make perfect firewood, funny thing is I don't have a fireplace :drevil:
