Title: cable modems and laptops and not working
Post by: Bobboau on January 11, 2004, 12:09:45 am
ok, I know some of you know... stuff... and knolege of... stuff would be extreemly useful to me at this moment as mom just got her old laptop from work and I have been trying to get it hooked up to our cablle modem and eventualy to a router hooked to our cable modem, the problem is the company's softere wont install, it says it can't renew the IP address for my network adapter (now might be a good time to point out that it's running windows 2000 pro) I've tried running ipconfig /release and renew but it says 'all adapters bound to phcp do not have dhcp addresses, the addresses were automaticaly configured and can not be relesed'
so I'm thinking I need to kill dhcp, though I'm not sure what it is (some sort of remote configuration system as far as I can tell) anyone here have any ideas?
it's a charter pipeline/broad jump type of thingy

Does it also have a modem of some kind/had AOL or some other ISP on it previously?

DHCP is supposed to assign IP numbers dynamically.  You may want to try using static IPs inside the router instead of using DHCP.

Alternately, try unistalling all the network adapters(NICs, Modems, ect) and letting Windows redetect them.  As it does so try and make it install the NIC first, then the others.

it was in a VPN, and there was some sort of remote acces thing in it, I think, that connected via a phone modem

we don't have a router yet, but are planning on getting oone later, I just wanted to get this running on the cable modem thinking it would be easier to get it running off a router later if I could get it working strait off the cable modem (I set one up at my aunt's house both comps were running right off the modem, just plugging in a router worked without any problems)

network adapters (in the device manager) only has '3com 10/100 mini pci ethernet adapter' and '3com 10/100 mini pci ethernet adapter - SecuRemote miniport'

I think at this point I should point out that I have absolutly _no_ networking experience or knowlege

Nonfunctionality is the laptop's natural state. To try and change that would be to question the will of the higher powers that created our universe and its laws.

Ah- free laptops.

Good luck with that, then. I remember getting a whole stack of 'em free at one point, found out very quickly why free laptops are usually a lot newer than free desktops. I think one of 'em was even kinda fixable, had only one or two real problems, but repairs woulda cost as much as just buying another of the same model.

Though your problem does sound more like it's settings your company or mom screwed up than anything really serious, which'd be a good thing... dunno about much of anything to do with network gear, though.

Effective as in thorough? Format the hard disk and start from scratch.

Effective as in simplest and involving minimal damage to anything else? ****ed if I know.
