Title: Need a little help...
Post by: pasti on January 11, 2004, 02:05:12 pm
Here are the pics:

Shivan fighter, smg like Dragon mk2....

Another Shivan fighter (SF Serpent :)). Smg like SF Astaroth, but with heavier shields and better "self defence weapons"  :)

Shivan strike cruisier. Fast (30-35m/s), 2 beams (one cruisier size, second from corvette), but will lack AAA (2-4 turreNts :) )

Now the problem: as You can see (if the pics are working) I have to join every single part to another. Ie. the Serpens halves are symmetrical and booleaned wich gives nasty effects....
Any advices?
When I join everything, I'll try to go down with polycount (cut polys that just sit and do nothing :) ) and then I'll add some details...
Thanks.

I don't know what they are, but they're not Shivan, imho.

However, you need to take care of all those overlapping polys before you even worry about putting together the mirrored sides.

Me likes! :) Not eactly shivan but still quite nice.

Not too keen on the cylinder joining the two halves of the strike cruiser though. That needs replacing with something a little more alien.

What program are you using? If it's TS < 6.0 have a try of the truespace extension Hamano mentioned somewhere in this thread

http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,19942.0.html

It should work on the serpent since that is mirrored.

Thanks!
Mikael: overlaping in Serpent (second model) is caused by booleans...

Karajorma: me likes that karajorma likes :). I've got 11 (including this 3) shivan ships based on "curvy design".

I'm using 3ds max so Hamano's plugin won't help much, but thanks anyway...

If 3ds max has a mirror modeller like TS 6 does you should be able to use that to make the serpent work in about 3-4 mouse clicks :D

You'll have to find someone who knows 3ds Max to tell you if it does though :)

3ds max has a magnificent mirror function :)

Just select the face/s and sleect mirror, then the axis.  Need to re-weld the vertices, natch, but I'm a big fan.

Um, for thos emodels - offhand (without seeing the geometry), you'll need toi first attach the objects together, then weld them together vertice by vertice.

Past first two models look like some unknow race cruiser and corvete but not Shinan fighters.
Third yep its nice shivan ship:D

Ok, second model is mirrored, and two halves joined with union boolean...but this creates overlaping polys..
Now I've tried to bring this two parts as close as possible, then each pair of vertex was collapsed (this has sense, beacuse collapsed vertex appeared in half way between old ones), but collapsing gives some unwanted things....
You say WELD?
We'll see....
