Title: SP Campaigns Won't save? 12_05
Post by: Psalmblaster on January 12, 2004, 06:17:37 am
Hi,
I'm using the Launcher with 12_05 and when I leave the [V] SP missions and return, it starts me back off at initial training. Is this a known problem? cound't find any posts about it or any related workarounds.
 Any help muchly appreciated
  - PB

PB, that's very strange - I've never encountered that problem before either. What mission are you up to? You're not running any mods, are you?

Sorry, scratch that, looks like it's working again.. havn't restarted but quitting and coming back still keeps the save. Guess it didn't save properly last time.. although none of the missions inbetween the start and where I finished last night loaded either. I assume it saves everytime a new mission is loaded.
No custom missions, just launcher. I did try Glide which crashed the game as it was loading.. might have corrupted save file or something? either way, it's working again. I'll post again if it happens again.

Okay, cool. Is this your first run-through of the FS2 campaign or are you just going through it again with FS Open?

Yeah, we weren't even sure if Glide worked at all in the latest versions (as no coder has a 3DFX based card), and we will probably be removing it entirely in the future.

Played it many times, one of the few games I know that you can play once and it has been so long since you played the first mission that you can start it all over again. I even made my own full campaign once plot branches and all, but I had to format my computer and at the same time my host decided to make my service non-free and deleted my files. Few months wasted :(

After a restart my progress point is still there, thanks for your help.

I'm quite impressed with the whole project, a year or so ago, could be longer, it looked like the whole Freespace community was dead, so it was a nice surprise to see this whole thriving hub of new projects, I ws looking for a space sim fix before X2 is released in Europe and remembered I had the best game ever installed still. Puts me to shame that I need to upgrade my GFX card to run Open decently.. gf4Ti 4200, but only 64Mb, but the shine maps and new engine effects are worth having to avoid looking at planets IMHO :)

I've got a GF3 64Mb and I can run it just fine in -htl mode

Hmmmmmmmmm Is that 64Mb on your card or your computer? I'm assuming card.
Your card should run open just fine, I've got the MX440, and it runs pretty happily as long as I don't start trying to make 20,000 poly capships ;)

Flipside :D

If I stick in the HiRes planets then I can't look at them without dropping to a stupidly low fps, and if I'm in a close dogfight, i.e right behind them, I just have to hold down my trigger and pray. 64mb is on card yes, other specs are
AthlonXP 2700+
1 Gig PC-2700 DDR RAM
MSI KT4Ultra
Serial Hard Disk

Max settings never had any problems on my old PII 350 (apart from deadly loading times) and turning them down in Open doesnt help either. It's mostly playable, but for some reason as soon as im close to the Psamtik or any other capship even the Behemoth, it's a slideshow.

In the launcher, are you using the command line "-htl"? If not, that should help rather immensly. Otherwise, I'd say this is something we should look into right away.

D:\Games\FreeSpace2\12_05_2003_fs2_open_r.exe -htl -pcx32 -jpgtga -d3d_no_vsync -d3dmipmap -cell

I've tried it with less but it doesn't make much difference. I have lots of work to do at the minute, but when I have time I'll run through a few more deliberate tests if you'd like. There are tweaks I could make my end, but I can run Max Payne 2 full settings with no slowdown and things running in background, so I doubt theres much I can do. (Like stopping all processes etc)

I though -cell wasn't supported in HT&L... maybe I'm wrong though.  Try losing everything but the first three and see what happens.

-cell  also needs special maps IIRC. So if there are no cell shaded maps it doesn't do a thing as fas as i know.
