Title: Jovan Chronicles Freespace?
Post by: Akalabeth Angel on January 12, 2004, 12:13:34 pm
After playing Sol: A History for Inferno, it got me to thinking of another game which pits the different planets against eachother, DP9's Jovian Chronicles. Has anyone thought of doing a conversion for this? I think that a lot of the ships look pretty cool, and there are fairly detailed plans of each of them in the books. Though one problem is that many of them use 'mecha', such as the battlepods in Robotech and not sure that those translate well to Freespace.

Here's a link to some minis incase anyone's curious:

The mecha are also supposed to be pretty powerful I think, so having the player take down an enemy warship single handidly probably wouldn't be too out of place.

I have no plans of doing anything on this front, but if someone else was doing it, it'll be pretty cool.

As a matter of fact, yes, I have considered it.

I threw out the idea though for two reasons. First, Freespace is an inappropriate engine to use as a base for JC. JC is a newtonian physics game and would be better in Iwar2's Flux engine. Second, doing the JC mecha in Freespace is pretty much impossible. You could design the mecha itself, but it wouldn't move properly because Freespace lacks complex POF based animation.

That said, the ships are absolutely incredible and I've been using them as inspiration for Freespace ships. I've got the Confed Fleetbook. It shows 3-view images of the ships, as well as listing dimensions and providing cutaways and deck diagrams. You can't ask for better than that when it comes time to build one of these ships in a modeller.

One could always just use the ship and fighter designs (as opposed to ExoArmours) and create some new faction within Freespace, as they're pretty good.

*heh* You mean like that one fighter that's basically a cockpit and a pair of engines attached to a weapons pod thats about nine times as big as the rest of the fighter? ;)

I could see doing it, but I'd rather do it for a better engine (like Flux).

plenty of interesting cap-ship designs inthere.

Yeah. The cool thing about JC is that its everything is Newtonian and there's not gravity field devices or whatever. So ships have to have rotating hull sections. Also, the designers gave careful thought to what space-going capships would be liked. The Confed Navy, for example, uses a purely modular capship system, so if anything gets screwed up, they can just put another one on, and different classes of capships can be constructed on the fly by attaching the appropriate hab/weapons ring, command fuselage, engine modules, work modules, etc.

And with the way the Flux engine works, you'd only have to create ship "parts", too. The setup scene for a given ship would just list the right pieces and where they belong. *heh*

CEGA Forever!

Which fleetbook do you have, Confed 1 or Confed 2?

Jovian Confederation Fleet Book 1. I'm looking for the rest of the fleet books. They rock.
