Many of the names for both species and craft have their origins in Hindu mythology. I`ve been doing some translating of a Purana. Anybody interested can visit my website.

Terrans: Greek names
Vasudans: Egyptian names
Shivans: Hindu names
-
Actually, the Shivans seem to use a mixture of mythologies.... IIRC Lucifer, Nephilm, etc are Christian. I think Shivans just use devil names, generally speaking.
www.pantheon.org is a better way to check, though.

Heh. I used to play CIV2 as the egyptians and just set up loads of cities to get Vasudan ship names.
Babylos is one of the better names I discovered.

Also, the Terrans use a mixture...
Orion.... Pagan IIRC though I think it got nicked.
Hercules..... Roman
Ares.....Greek
Loki.....Norse
Also, useless trivia time, did you know that Beelzebub was the chariot driver of the Sun-God in Pagan worship, it was only adopted as another name of Satan to try and stamp out Paganism by the Church.

I think FS1 ships use Norse, and FS2 ones Greek mythology
-
First off, let's distinguish between ship classes and wing names.
Classes are quite varied. Many Terran ships are Greek, but there are also Roman, Norse, Pagan and Celtic (Boadicea and Iceni). Vasudans are Egyptian, while Shivans are generally bad supernatural stuff (from monsters such as Manticores to devils such as Asmodeus)...
Wing names are constant, technically. Terrans were Greek letters, Vasudans were Zodiac signs, Shivans were Hindu gods and GTI was Norse. In FS2, Vasudans got lumped with Terrans and Shivans got Zodiac signs.

The Terran ships generally draw from European mythology in general.
