It's... ermmm... I have no idea what it is. Anybody care to speculate?

Thanks to Ashrak for pointing me to this tutorial:

http://ningen.nattoli.net/tutorials/magic_talisman_01.html

Figured it'd be better to have something a little original rather than the power symbol which is a tad obvious. Anyhow, speculate away!

It's an ancient angelic summoning symbol.  Or it means 'Thunder' in some ancient, iconographic language.

No, you fool.  It's the Outer Oblivian runic symbol for Kalifireth.

Remember kids, he's called Thundfireth now, so don't go around calling him Thunder or some such nonsense.

Nifty avatar BTW. Too bad we mortals don't get none.

You never had my Geography teachers

Still - Year 11 Geography was fun at least - though again, because of the teacher. He was thick as two short planks, so we had a lot of fun at his expense.

Geography was fun depending on the teacher - one of my school teachers gave us tests on where places were (I'm talking every place - not just major capitals - god forsaken little places that nobody should ever need to know about. Anyhow, if you failed his tests you had to stay behind and learn them some more - I really hated that class...

considering his title is Deus Ex Machina, I'm betting on some weird relation to Ion Storm's latest game.

Actually you're off - but I'll tell you anyhow...

Firstly, Ashrak pointed me at various Photoshop tuts for practice and one of them (the one I posted) looked pretty damn cool (as you can see!).

Secondly, I was watching Donnie Darko earlier in the day and one of the lines Donnie says at one point is "Deus Ex Machina" which struck me as a nice little line.

A few modifications in Photoshop and there we are!

(Why Donnie says what he says, I still don't know - if anyone has theories on this I'd like to hear them).

Dude you know that if one person has one - everyone wants them. It's not that I object personally to the size or anything like that - it's just a potential problem that's not worth it. We made that decision ages ago.

this forums sucks because:

No avatars (yeah ok project thingies)
no image signatures (.... wtf? .....)

Rules because: i like the game and this is the only "active" place i know of ..... and i like most people here

If you upload them to the site and don't remote link them - everything.

It's one of the options that comes with the avatar choices on the control panel - you can link from another site or upload it to this forum to load directly.

Anyhow, it's not changing anything - no avatars for the masses :)

oook how about image signatures then

EDIT: and you can always set the image size on avatar upload to 1 bit.......

Oh God no. Do you have any idea what that would do to 56k loading times? HLP is one of the few forums I visit where I can reasonably expect the little IE flag to stop waving after 20 seconds or so, and can open a dozen threads without having to wait 5 minutes before I can read the first post in any of them.

Not really, no. However, I'm also know that image sigs slow me (and presumably every other 56 ker out there) down to a crawl. There are still a lot of 56 kers on HLP. Thus, Image sigs are bad. It's that simple.
Title: Thunder's New Avatar
Post by: Fineus on January 15, 2004, 12:33:26 pm
Well, it's not really under debate untill one of the admins says it is - and so far that hasn't happened. I'm sure you can cope without avatars and image sigs for now...
Title: Thunder's New Avatar
Post by: mikhael on January 15, 2004, 12:42:53 pm
Don't EVER put in image signatures. I'm begging you. Image signatures add absolutely nothing to the discussion. They just take up a bunch of room and serve to show off just how much people like their current pathetic attempt at photoshop skills. Avatars and user titles are just as dumb, but at least they don't stretch the page vertically like image signatures.

If you're really so bloody concerned with your precious signature, Ashrak, just put in an IMG tag at the bottom of each of your posts. Surely if you're so much damned better with computers than the rest of us as you seem to think, you can figure a way to do that.

Agreed, I count 9 images in Ashraks siggy alone.... Why should 56kers have to play around with IE to accomodate this, especially if everyone decides to do it :(

If it gets to out of hand we can disable image posting on the forums. Which will really screw up the communities ability to pimp models and SCP advances etc. Don't piss around with this.

Ashrak: Images in siggys are simply not gonna happen. Same reason that custom avatars for the masses isn't happening - they're usually flashy, annoying, and a waste of screen space and bandwidth.

HLP is as friendly as it is partly because of the forced equality of pretty much everyone. And that's one formula that isn't going to be changing anytime soon.

Yes, well... we've all seen how Thundifireth's threats to resign from adminship due to lack of time, yadda yadda have come to naught. Methink that if he ever does disappear for more than a week - not due to vacation or some other enforced absence from online activities - then we (read "I" :D) can knock him back to bread-n'-butter status.

But until then, the H4MM4R of 7HUND4R's VVR47H will still haunt the transgressors.

Flash sig images are even worse.... I've seen forums with no limits, where people have put sodding video clips (80 frame gifs or summat) as avatars and have a 3 mile wide banner as their siggy.

Are you kidding?

It took me to be AWOL for a year and a half for people to start knowing me as Raa Tor'h, rather than Snipes. And another 4 months before people learned to spell it correctly. Then, people who I've helped with models and the like still type it wrong. *looks at KT and Trashman*

1) It's not that hard to spell Kalfireth. Kalfireth. Kalfireth. Kalfireth.

2) Avatars are okay, but anything bigger than 80x80 or animated will seriously damage your eyes. I'm really glad we don't have them here.

3) Image sigs = worst thing that could happen to a forum. I've seen people use 300+ KB animated GIFs as a SIGNATURE - insane. And then there's the 500x500 images stretching the page to un-natural proportions.
