If you dont know use this special version of the launcher to find out, go to the DX8 section and press get texture size.
http://mysite.freeserve.com/thomaswhittaker/c_code/freespace/Launcher2.rar
I'm running this poll because I would like to put foward the idea of getting rid of support for texture sections in D3D8. I'm just researching at the moment to see what kind of impact that might have.

I think we should also post or vidcard to give a better picture:
GeF2 Ti - 2048

Basically if you texture size is 1024 or over everything is peachy.

I have a GF2, MX, so I'm assuming it's the same. I haven't gotten my MoBo delivered yet, so I can't test. And afterward, I'm saving for a 9600xt anyway..

GeForce 3 64Mb
4096 Baby.

**** i have vote wrong could someone change my vote from 1024 to 4096

-
hmm so there is something that geforces can do better than radeons
also the launcher still only has 640X480 resolutions
-
GeForce 4 MX440

Use the program provided, dont guess.
'Opimal' is not useful.

Hu?
Are you saying the lanucher isnt offering you 1024x768?
-
Important: Who sayed 256 or less?
-
i think that was a joke^^
-
GeForce 3 64Mb
4096 Baby.
Same here. Probably not a good idea to make textures that big if you want to retain anything like an acceptable framerate though... :p :D
-
Radeon9800XT
4096

I hope not, theres an actual point to this.
If no one posts or e-mails on it I will have to assume it was and strike it off the record.

yup that's what I'm saying, I'm afraid I never actualy use the launcher (I never did with the V launcher) exept to set the registry, I have several shortcuts with assorted cmandline options for what I want, this is probly why I have only run in OGL mode two or three times (that and the fact that I'm not working on it)
ATI Radeon 9800 pro 128mb, if you didn't know

It needs the hi res vp file to be present in the freespace directory to offer 1024x768. Is the 'Hi res pack' box ticked at the bottom?
Also make sure the target exe is in the correct directory.
I know thats simple stuff but theres not much that can go wrong with that code, if thats not the problem I'll put a debug version together for you.
Also of course make sure you have v3 or better. I think there was a 2.x version that had a bug that caused the problem you have.
I take it neither OGL or D3D offer 1024x768?
-
GeForce FX 5200 : 4096
*does a double take*
Wooohh:eek2:
EDIT: On a related note, Modelview only shows 1024 or less, what is the max FS2_open displays?
-
TNT2 2048
This old card is full of surprises.
I will post what my laptop can handle as soon as I get Freespace 2 installed.
-
GeF4 MX440 - 2048

3D Prophet II MX
2048

I have a Radeon 9700, but don't really know the numerics about this... *Decides not to vote* My educated guess is 'Bloody big'. :) Neverwinter Nights, which seems to be a texture-intensive game (biggest texture-pack all the way, baby!) doesn't give me problems until there's a lot of action and shadows and background activity (like Avast! updating itself). Hm, my point... do I have to have a point... Well, FS2_Open should not bring this machine to its knees unless it's some really radical change.

2048
Radeon IGP 340M (a.k.a. Radeon Mobility)

Try with the Texture size launcher version earlier in this Thread which will show you your maximum texture size.

Oh yeah? Let's compare framerates ;7 :p
-
Even though my TNT2 supports 2048 i wouldn't advise to use ultra large textures, otherwise you will see many PCs on their knees...
Just double FS2 used resolution and it will be enough.
-
This thread is about determining if support for max texture size below 1024 should be supported.
-
Got Freespace 2 into my laptop now. It has an ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. Texture size is 2048.
-
If you want to test your 4096 capabilities, I recently uploaded the Sovereign Class's mega uber texture set which tops at 4096x2048. My Radeon 9500pro handled it with negligable FPS loss.
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,20294.msg399684.html#msg399684
This is strange, your Launcher says my card's topsize is 2048, yet the game displays my texture set and it does not look downsampled.
-
GeForce3 Ti200 64 MB
4096
-
UGH!!! How does a Geforce 3 defeat a Radeon 9500 Pro?!!! But I bet that a texturesize that big takes up most of its memory. ::calms down and stops posturing:: Amazing what that old card is capable of.
-
Got a Geforce 5600 - texture size 4096!
-
Geforce 2 -2048
-
Bugger me... Says 2048. Bah, bring on the highest resolution you can muster! :thepimp: My computer will own it all days of the week!
