Title: Starcraft: Ghost
Post by: Antares on January 17, 2004, 02:20:22 pm
I'm curious as to whether or not anyone else is awaiting the release of Blizzard's newest title as eagerly as I am.  I'm at college right now, and when I don't have any work to complete, I don't really have any quality games to play.  I've already worn out my Christmas purchases, so right now, I'm looking forward to getting to play a little Starcraft again.

Feel free to comment.  Here are a few facts on the game so far:

- Ghost is being developed as a console game only.  Blizzard has already stated that there will absolutely not be a PC port.

- Ghost is being released on the three current major consoles: the X-Box, the GameCube, and the PS2.  Rumors of the game being exclusive to one console or another are false.  The game is being developed on the X-Box since that console is the most resource-intensive, but once development is complete, the game will be tweaked for porting to the remaining systems.

- Aside from minor graphical differences, there are no major changes between the three versions of the game.  There are no console-exclusive "extras".

- As of now, there is no concrete release date.  The game was originally slated to be complete last winter, but Blizzard provided the development team with an extension to incorporate all of the various features and make the game as complete as possible.  Several release dates have been posted on various retailer websites, but these vary widely, usually in the range of Feb. 10 to June 6 (one site claimed the game would be out sometime in November).   Blizzard has said that the game should be out sometime this year; an employee of Nihilistic (the folks developing Ghost) said they were expecting a release in the "second half" of 2004.

- It's certain that the game will be released for all three consoles at the same time.  Information indicating that the X-Box release will preclude the others by a few months is incorrect.

- Whether or not Nova's wicked "Cy-Blade" weapon is still in the game or not is unclear.  It was initially one of her starting weapons, but the Dev team members commented that it was too broken of a weapon for her to possess that early in the game.  It may be an item acquired later (as it is still listed as a weapon in Starcraft Legacy's feature on Ghost), but indications are that the weapon has been totally replaced in favor of a "psychic shock" ability and some martial arts skills.

- Ghost takes place following the events of Starcraft: Brood War.

It's in first person, right? If so, I'm not intereted... That and I'd rather play a SC game on a PC. Console versions never live up to my expectations...

I believe first-person and third-person views are available.

In the trailer, it's third.
Pb is, said trailer really looked ( has in "not only visuals" ) BAD. I hope it has improved since then, coz otherwise Blizzard is running for their first failure.

Well Blizzard can only be lucky to say that it wasn't there foult, cause someone else developed it...just with their licence.
Btw...I am still waiting for StarCraft 2.....

I guess if it really turns out bad, they'll trash it like they did with Lord of the clans.

I wasn't gonna get it, but then I bought a gamecube, so now I might actually buy it.

Definately NOT getting it. Stupid FPS ego-shooter crap. And console-only. A nightmare of a game.

Looks interesting and it could have potential.  If the development team doing it adhere's to Blizzards usual standards of quality than the initial graphics have been totally re-worked since the initial looks at the game and that the gameplay has been fine tuned into a solid game.  But I guess surprises can always happen...we'll see.

Read a couple of previews that seem to think the game is going to rock, reminds me of a cross between Splinter Cell and Halo, that can only be a good thing if they get it right.

No FPS can sell today that has nothing to offer than the 3 letters.

If it's clever and tactical - which is the Blizzard trademark - it will definitly be more than a weekend shooting.

I would be glad to have an FPS in the Statcraft universe. Especially if it has proper difficulty(not what Starcraft had).

"Ego Shooter" as in you are the only person capable of affecting any change or of winning a war and everyone else is just this stupid little bot with 4.7 rounds of ammunition.  It's rarely explained well (Halo sort of pulled it off, but it was still a legendary stretch).  Thus, you are superpowerful in the game and would have an inflated ego or something to that effect.

Oh, you mean, like about 80% of the games out there? Like Alpha one? Like Mario?
I suppose the only games which don't have that are RTS :p
Title: Starcraft: Ghost
Post by: phreak on January 20, 2004, 12:02:30 pm
actually RTS does it too.

something along the lines of: "You are the only commander who can bring our armies to victory!!!11"

Post by: Unknown Target on January 20, 2004, 12:21:22 pm
Operation Flash Point did a good job of avoiding that somewhat, methinks.

But the very concept of games defies the ability to do that: You are the player. If you're actions didn't affect what happens in the game, then what would be the point?

RTS you are God, basically.  Right up to the point of making the little people out of meat and sticks.

New preview(s) of the game popped up yesterday.  Other than a rather disappointing year's-end release date, I noticed something that piqued my interest:

Quote
Roper says one of Blizzard's goals is to show that even though Nova is the elite of an elite Ghost unit, she's but one small part in a very big, very expansive war.

JUST LIKE FREESPACE OMG!!!11!!ONE :p

- I think StarCraft: Ghost is a TPS rather than a FPS.  You must see your character in order to do certain stuff, such as mantling onto a ledge.

- It's is only for consols, which I think sucks.

- I would rather get Prince of Persia when it comes out.

it's not nice to call people that are more than likely older than you "boy"

Also, yeah, Mario Golf is an exception, although he could be playing for the good of the whole PGA :P  but most games your unit(s) are part of a much bigger war, etc.

IMO Halo was not that great of a game Knight Templar.  All it had was multiplayer that was fun for about a week, then it got old.  There are much better games such as Super Smash Bros. Melee that are more than twice the fun of Halo...

On a console... maybe.. If I were really stoned..

It sorta depends though. SSBM is great for parties.. but it's a whole different genre than Halo. it's hard to beat a good PC Halo multiplay game. (w/o lag of course)

Zombie thread! :shaking:

Saw this pop up on "One Year Ago", and took a little stroll down memory lane.  I almost feel guilty about anticipating this game.

A year later, and we're not really any better off than we were before.  Ghost has been delayed umpteen times, and Nihilistic is no longer working on the game.  They were committed to other projects, so Blizzard pulled them in favor of Swingin' Ape Studios.  Blizzard's site for Ghost hasn't been updated since last year's E3 in May, and the official fansite, http://www.scraftghost.net, has been shut down due to a general lack of available information on the game and Blizzard's hush-hush policies.

I spoke to a staffer at our local Gamestop over the Christmas break, and he said he believed the game was being held off for the next-gen consoles: the Xbox2, PS3, and so on.  I'm really beginning to wonder if it will be released at all. :sigh:

I dunno, I'm no great fan of most console games (there are always exceptions-Goldeneye, Halo, GTA -thinks...a few more) but if Blizzard do keep to thier usual increadibly high standards (Warcraft anyone?) then I have high hopes for this game....I do hope there is a bonus bit where you lead a group of marines into a group of Zerg.

the funny thing is that you don't have to buy it. me, I already bought a console, so I'm less pissed. I'm also starting to suspect some amount of vaporware here.
