Title: Disney dies again
Post by: Nico on January 19, 2004, 07:19:13 am
http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/ae/articles/0118disneystudio0118.html

Saw that last week, but I stumbeled on it again, so I thought I'd share.
No more 2D animation at Disney. I wonder if old Walt rests that well.

Walt would be spinning in his grave.. 'tis sad news, for it was 2d animation that made Disney studios in the first place..

I imagine it's much easier to work with and manipulate 3D artwork such as with Pixar studios - plus the kids probably go for it a lot more. I still say you can't beat the old classics (Jungle Book, Snow White etc.)

Ah well, anyway, now that I think about it, I don't care.

Lion King totally ****ing trounces all-over every other Disney movie ever made.

If Disney were the English Crown, Lion King would be the huge diamond embedded in it.

That's gay. It means we'll probably not see any new movies with human characters in it, like one of my favorites: Aladdin. In fact, now that i think of it, most of their classic movies center on human characters. but sadly, not until CG improves somewhat will it be cost effective to make human centered movies.

and the Lion King=The roXor

I think it's because it deviated from the usual Disney plot:

Happiness But Not Perfect -> Tradgedy -> Lowest Point In Life -> Kind Strangers -> Gaining Happiness -> Losing Happiness -> Paradise -> Maiming Of 'Evil' Forces

Lion King kinda went:

UnEasy Happiness -> Tradgedy -> Struggle -> More Struggle -> Being Dicked On Some More -> Taking Control Of Life -> Murder -> Paradise

Basically, it ripped-off Hamlet.

Aladdin was good. The Guard-Chase scene was awesome.

And Aladdin calling Abu his 'esteemed offendee'.

Post by: Carl on January 19, 2004, 10:05:43 am
The Lion King was based on Hamlet, not ripping it off. The Disney guys said so. *always believes the Disney guys*

The Lion King and Aladdin have one thing in common: they're both darker than most of the other Disney movies. It's a refreshing change.

Post by: Nico on January 19, 2004, 10:09:55 am
Yeah. Lion King was also a rip off of King Leo, but that's beyond the point I suppose :p
Title: Disney dies again
Post by: an0n on January 19, 2004, 10:14:36 am
And Aladdin was a rip-off of......err......Les Miserables? As well as just about every Arabian Nights tale ever told.

How do you get Les Mis from Aladdin? Where's Javert tracking Alladin, dogging him to the last, even though he's become a good man? Ali wasn't bad, but it wasn't Les Mis, even slightly.

The head of the palace guard....err.....Kasuf, was it?

Aladdin steals a piece of bread and Kasuf never stops trying to get him. Even after he becomes Prince, he's still out to get him.

I liked Treasure Planet. Nice fantasy ride :)

Lion King, was...meh...never knew what the biggy was. Except for Timone and Poomba: They R0xor j00 box0rs! :D

Anyway, an0n's right, pretty much EVERY Disney original movie went: [Happy]--->[something new happens or comes about]---->[causes problems]---->[conflict]---->[conflict retified in final battle-ish thingy]---->[happy forever]

:wtf: Disney IS 2D cartoons, from Snow White onwards, if they give up, then it will be the end of hand-drawn animation outside Art colleges. Yes, I enjoyed Pixar and Stuff like that, but what made Disney famous was the skill of their artists in bringing characters to life.

Admittedly, CG Artists are very skilled of their own right, but Disney not having drawn animation is like Manga with lip-sync, too unbelievable to believe!

*whacks* You mean Anime.  Anime = Japanese animation.  Manga = Japanese comics/graphic novels.

Yes, but I only ever watched the Manga brand, back in the mid 90's, so I can't speak for others :)

Either way, yes, I guess I meant Anime ;)

But there was someone called Kasuf. Maybe it was the narrator?

I don't think Disney have had a decent 'drawn' cartoon success (i.e. box office) since the Lion King, whereas the Pixar stuff has cleaned up.  That's yer reason for it right there.

If you had ever read the Arabian Nights (even a gimpy translation), you'd realise that the Disney Aladdin is remarkably unlike the old arabian story. In fact, the only simarities are someone wicked wanting a lamp and duping some patsy into fetching it. From there, it goes elsewhere entirely.

But hey, why would anyone actually READ when they can watch pretty moving pictures?

Presumably they intended on buying a new body.  Possibly a mechanical super-robot body, from which he can rule the Earth with a fist of iron.

Still you know the funny thing is Disney bought the right to distribute Miyasaki films themselves.

I suppose no one should ever have started making television. Radio was soooo much better. And color TV? worst idea of all.

The medium is not what is important. The stories are what is important.

Bob, you display an incredible aptitude for missing the point.

I'm not "YAY FOR TEH PORGESS!!!111". I'm "Yay for story!". Story, message, entertainment: Those are all that count. How the story gets to you does NOT.
Title: Disney dies again
Post by: karajorma on January 21, 2004, 12:17:51 pm
Well mik does make a good point in that it's the story that is important not the medium they tell it in. Just cause they use 3D doesn't mean the story can't be good.

I don't buy this crap that just cause they don't make 2D movies any more everything they do will therefore be worthless.

However I do agree with the sentiment that it's a shame they are quiting 2D as there is a lot that can be done with that medium that doesn't look the same in 3D.

Well, I've never been a big fan of the Disney 2d style. Animation wise, the only thing I've liked for a very long time from Disney was Lilo&Stitch and maybe Tarzan. I'm very much not a fan of TLK, TLM, BatB and the like (story OR animation) or Aladdin (story was groovy, animation was annoying, as usual).

Whilst I agree its a shame to see a 2d studio going away, I just can't mourn the loss of a DISNEY 2d studio.

Well, Aladdin, Tarzan, Beauty & t'Beast, and a couple of others were all, to a certain degree, ruined by some rather iffy computer animated scenes. They'd more or less got it by Tarzan, but some of the older stuff is actually quite unsettling to watch, knowing it's origin.

He must be talking about the old DeepCanvas stuff, like the stampedes in Lion King and the Ballroom in Beauty and the Beast. I wouldn't say they were ruined by the 3d stuff, not at all. They're bad on other merits (usually Disneyfied stories, or that annoying overdone style they use, or the singing, dear god the ****ing singing).
