Seems rather elaborate just for changing views...
-
Well **** me
-
Lol, it' rare to find non Microsoft news from Redmond...
-
's interesting concept, that's for sure. Strange it hasn't been tried before, actually....
-
Thing is, we were actually expecting the next-gen console. Unless they're planning on pitching this thing against Billbox 2 and PS3...
-
The concept is intriguing but this isn't going to rescue nintendo's crisis, I thought personally nintendo were finally getting onto the right track. I was wrong :sigh: , I just hope they got some ideas for the ngc :) and good ones because the ps3 is going to be a big competitor, as for the xbox..its not very popular..

 BillBox 2  funny

Nah. I reckon they won't reveal that for a while yet, IIRc the Gamecube is having a bit of a sales surge - revealing the successor could put people off buying the GC.
-
meh, what the hell happend to GC netplay?
-
Honestly, I think what Nintendo's fall was always the targetting of the young kids market. It suddenly became the Pokemon console and all the games you'd see for the GC was for little kids. Unlike PS2 and XBox, whree they have a full range of games but mostly target Teen. Plus they have titles for a more Mature audience.
Nintendo was without a doubt THE game system in 8-bit and Super Nintendo. Sega could barely keep up. But when it went to the N64 and competed against Sony, all went to poop. Again, it was all those kids games.
I think Nintendo only has a hold on the portable games market wtih their Gameboys... but that's about it.
-
they can compete with Sony and MS if they wanted to. THey have a solid control the handheld market so its expected the move in that direction. But N has learned from its misteaks in the past, so i can expect a little more when their next console comes out. Lets face it, GC is a kickass console. It only suffered from bad games.

Well... 8-player Mario Kart isn't exactly what we were hoping for, but Nintendo have always been rather wary of launching net play without a suitable game base. In any case, 8-player MK is supposed to be the dog's danglies if you can assemble the required kit

Metal Gear Solid, Splinter Cell, Resident Evils aplenty (including some exclusives), Eternal Darkness *pauses for breath* Metroid, F-Zero, Soul Calibre, Turok 4. And that's without looking up any more in a magazine. Oh, and Hitman and XIII. And Killer 7.

You think wrong

Meh. You're closer than the other guy, certainly, but I wouldn't say GC suffered from bad games - see the list further up this post and add Zelda which is quite frankly amazing. Anyone who dismess Zelda citing the cel-shading is ignorant and is missing out :)
And that's all I have to say about that
-
The other guy? I have a name, ya know (although not pronouncable) :p
And I think most of the games you've listed are recent games, no? Which is why I guess they're seeing a surge in recent sales? I loved Nintendo and would have bought one instead of my PS2 two years ago if they had a collection of games that were worth playing if you were older than 10. Resident Evil was the only game they had that was "Mature" for the longest time.
And you contest that they have the solid hold on the portable market? What other company makes portable game systems and holds the market then? I don't see NGage as stealing the market in the few months it's been out. And as far as I can see, GC is in 3rd when it comes to console systems behind Ps2 and Xbox. If they have a hold on some other market, then by all means share it.

 Wind Waker is so beaty game

[color=66ff00]People who buy N-Gage's soon regret it. The damn thing is so badly designed, like playing cricket with a wet fish.
As for Nintendo being third, I wouldn't doubt that but I have to admit if I was going to buy a 'next gen.' console I'd grab a cube first and foremost. The games available for it far exceed the games on either the billbox as DG lovingly calls it :) or the PS2 which as far as I'm concerned is still riding a wave of hype created by sony's grasp on weak minded 20-30 year olds (buy me, I look cool). The only game that I've been geniunely interested in since MGS2 came out was ICO.

I think that all consoles are in 1th place because they are diffrent
of course 50,000,000+ ps2 but still
-
In graphic quality, who beats who? I've heard Xbox was the best of the bunch, others tell me that it was the GameCube, with the Ps2 being less than Xbox.
I also agree with u, Maeg, that Ps2 is more hype than anything. They have good games but they eventually make it to the other consoles anyway. If I had the money I'd have all three, but I don't. And when I got the Ps2 it was only cuz there wasn't anything out by Gamecube that I thought was worth having.
I don't even buy games anymore, though. The one thing I always hate about the new consoles (ps2, xbox, gc... and only maybe just ps2 and xbox cuz I don't know about GC) was that every game that came out could be beaten in 15 hours (except for rpg's). They're all so pretty with full surround sound dolby and incredible graphics, but you'd finish it in a week (less if u had more time on your hands). So why not just rent them and return it when you're done? Plus all the storylines suck.
Nothing like the old games... They didn't stress on graphics, just on playability and story. Anyone remember the original Rygar?
-
Ps2 has PES3 and GTA (well, for 6 months at least). That's about it. Of course, you can;t get PES on a Gamecube or X-box, so I bought a PS2. I've bought a total of about 3 games - GTA:VC, PES2 and PES3.

Hell no. I contest your statement that the hand-held market is Nintendo's only success. Jesus, this is how mikhael must feel.
-
I'm sure they're selling Gamecubes, but I would hardly call it a success. Let me rephrase that as they apparently are selling gamecubes now. Perhaps they're having success with them now, but in the beginning and for a while their sales were lukewarm.
This article (http://cube.ign.com/articles/440/440327p1.html) shows that Gamcecube had to report a loss because of lackluster sales of Gamecubes. It also states how they had to stop production of the gamecubes to clear inventories.
But all wasn't loss with Gamecube as because of lowering the price to $99, they had a huge surge in sales for the holidays. Here, read this article (http://cube.ign.com/articles/463/463376p1.html) that indicates that because of their price drop to $99 that they may have unseated #2 Xbox, which I think was still selling at like $169 or something.
-
It largely depends which market you're looking at. Certainly GC is outselling the Billbox by a mile in at least one territory (ie. either Japan, USA or Europe) but I can't remember which...
-
Japan. MS can;t give away x-boxes over there.
NB: One crucial difference is that Ms makes a big loss on X-box sales, whereas nintendo apparently makes a profit on the GC.
-
Well, most consoles are loss leaders for the companies. They sell the consoles for a drastically cheaper price than production and make it up in the games.

I agree with DG on pretty much every point here, except Turok. There's never been a good Turok anything. Ever.
I won't claim the GC is the best console on the market (actually, yes, yes I will right now), but its got some fantastic games. Anyone who dismisses the GameCube because of 'kiddie' games is a lobotomised idiot.
Sure, Nintendo's INTERNAL focus tends to be less 'adult', but that doesn't always mean 'kiddie'. The SSBM, MarioKart, and MarioParty games aren't kiddie, but they're not too mature either. They appeal to a broad range of gamers. For every Pokemon out there, there's a Metroid Prime.
If you start looking at EXTERNAL, third party stuff, you can't really complain. They have a broad range of titles from kiddie to addult, in every genre.
-
:yes::nod:
Metroid Prime was the reason I bought a Gamecube. Of course right after I bought it they had the price drop... oh well.
and DG is right on about Wind Waker. it's awesome.
-
Yeah, Metroid is the real Nintendo console-seller. Forget Mario or Zelda or Donkey Kong. Unless its got a Metroid game, I'm not shelling out my money for it.
-
True, Metroid Prime is got to be one of the TOP 20 GAMES  of all time.
As for Ps(2) and XBox I know that these consoles are usually bought more than 60% of the time under the influence of one of the following (Highest to Lowest):
- DVD Support (Although not very good decoding)
- Disc Format simple to Copy (Pirating)
- Brand Popularity
- Cheap (Combined Support for Games + DVDs)
- Karaoke Support (rare but it happens)

Seriously, what do you guys like so much about Metroid Prime?
From the day that I watched my friend play it, yah, it looked cool, but half the game seemed like it was just random tasks to get back your equipment and whatnot.. with lack of any actual continuing story. That and the lack of friendly interaction of any sort made the game seem rather boring to me.
-
There is a story, you just have to follow it! Obviously not being a metroid fan you might find it difficult to grasp the concept of the actual plot. of Course if anyone asks for that, I'll say play the game :p
-
Uh.. well, I've played/seen enough of the Metroid series to understand what it's about.. it just didn't look like it was going anywhere other than a long item trek really. My friend played from the beggining for a good 3 - 4 hours too. I asked him if this was some kind of training grounds of those alien bird people (that made the suit.. forgot their name) but he said it was the actual game. Meh.
-
Does your friend read every message that comes about during the game?
Chozo btw are those alien bird people :D
-
Metroid prime looked incredible! But I can't play FPS on consoles. I just can't. I have a very difficult time aiming. VERY DIFFICULT TIME. I can only do FPS with a mouse and keyboard setup. To tell u how bad I am, I stopped playing GTA: Vice City for over a year when I got stuck in one of the missions where you had to shoot at a target range (It's one of the Malibu Club missions where you gotta hire a shooter). No matter how many times I played, I couldn't pass it. Finally passed it 2 weeks ago.
-
Random statement - I only have Zelda and F-Zero, and I consider my Cube money well spent
-
I tried getting my girlfriend to buy me the GameCube and she laughed in my face :(
-
Until Pikmin 2 comes out my Cubes going to continue to gather dust sadly.
Xbox Live is eating wayyyy too much of my time to be healthy, 16 player Crimson Skies is calling me right now in fact. Zoooooooooooommmmmm.
-
Mmmm.

If you played the other Metroid games, you know that the Prime story continues the story outlined in them. However, if you don't read the messages and examine objects in the world regularly, you will miss that story completely. The story is there, more completely than any other Metroid game. In all the others (except Fusion) the story is only told at the beginning and the end. With Fusion, you get story snippets here and there, with the Samus-X and the cutscenes. But with Prime, you get the story through cutscenes, terminals, scanning creatures and objects, etc. Ask your friend to show you the game log so you'll understand the story better. It contains every bit of text in the game.
What I like about Metroid Prime is that its faithful to the original NES and SNES game. It retains the feel of the old 2d platformers. However, it updates the look and sound of the game by making it 3d. They could have gone for the run-and-gun stupidity of games like Quake and Half-life, but they chose instead to stick to platform jumping and item collection and clever level design. There are some places where 3d allows the game to transcend the originals, however. 3d lets the level designers hide toys like missile packs and the like more cleverly. Jumping puzzles can be more complex and interesting. Item usage is extended in interesting ways. One puzzle that comes to mind is unlocking the plasma beam. You use two different ball effects, the grapple, bombs and the space jump. All the classic Metroid tropes remain though, so the player never loses the feeling of the older platformers.
You mention a lack of friendly interaction and extended item collection as complaints. Did you not play the previous Metroid games at all? There was no real friendly interaction in any of them (there were the birds and fuzzy things that taught you to use the power jump and the triangle jump, I guess, in SuperMetroid and they show up in Fusion). You might consider the computer in Fusion 'friendly', but I wouldn't. More importantly, Metroid has always been a collect-the-toys game, so this isn't a valid complaint about Prime. From the first Metroid on, there was a certain minimum amount of toys you absolutely had to collect to finish the game. Prime is no different in that regard.

Metroid Prime is not a First Person Shooter. Its a first person game, and you shoot things, but that's not the point. Its a First Person Platformer. If there was more run-and-gun stuff in it, not having a mouse and keyboard might matter, but the fact of the matter is that the game is about running and jumping more than anything else.
-
No, Metroid was one of the classic gmae series that I never actually played through all the way.. only rented it once or twice.
And my complaints weren't about Prime within the Metroid Series, rather Prime as a game itself.
-
First things first. Get Nesticle or some other NES emulator and get Metroid. Next, get a GB emulator and Metroid II. Then get some SNES emulator and Super Metroid. Then get a GBA emulator and Metroid Fusion. THEN play Prime. You cannot possibly go wrong.
I can see where someone wouldn't 'get' Prime if they played it in isolation. What it comes down to is that Metroid, no matter which title, is about item collection and platforming. The in-game story is secondary and only exists to keep you going to the next weapon or gadget. The story that wraps around the games is pretty thin, really, only serving to give you a reason to go charging around trying to stop energy sucking metroids from consuming the galaxy. ;)

[color=66ff00]I can't believe you lumped HL which is a rather fantastic story driven, puzzle filled and atmospheric experience with quake.
Actually I can't believe you slated HL at all, that game was pretty stupendous.

I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, Maeg.
The fact of the matter is that I couldn't stand Half Life. It didn't help that I played it immediately after System Shock 2. After that, Half Life was just Shock2 but without the all the good things. Your character was generic, the music couldn't compete, the game simply wasn't at all scary, and the story (as presented in the beginning) just couldn't compare at all. It felt like Quake. It moved like Quake. It played like Quake*. My opinion of Half Life is based entirely on playing it and hating it enough that I uninstalled it within two days.
* Sorry. Its superior to Quake in one way: there are things that move that you shouldn't shoot (like the Barnies). Whee. Big improvement. If our standards are so low that Half Life is a great game, its no wonder that studios like Looking Glass can't survive. They don't churn out the same derivative crap over and over, milking people's wallets endlessly.

listen to HIM! He, at least, knows what he's talking about.
-
The storyline in Deus Ex was cool and the trailer for Deus Ex: IW is awesome  and scary :shaking:, HL was ok and Quake can't be compared to anything unless you frag :D
<-- me don't like Quake or UT.... :p
-
That's because Deus Ex and DxIW are both Warren Spector games, the man behind things like System Shock 2 and Thief.
-
Cool :D Not sure if I mentioned this before or anyone else has but Theif 3 (http://www.thief3.com/) is coming soon
-
*heh* Old news. My buddy Crash is doing AI work for Thief3 and led the team that profiled the code from DxIW.
