Which weapon do you think is the most satisfying to use and blow things away with? I nominate the Trebuchet. Taking out Nahemas from 3.5 clicks is great fun. Tempests were also pretty cool. Pull up behind and let 'im have it!
-
For sheer fun you can't hammering the enemy with dumbfires :D
The dumbfire from Inferno is even more fun. My only problem with it is I find myself burning through the entire bank in seconds :D
-
I use Dumbfire for closework on Bombers if I've not got any trebs to hand.
I think the first time I used a Maxim/Kayser combination against the Shivans was one of the most satisfying, almost as satisfying as using the Prometheus in FS1 for the first time :)
Burn Shivan! Burn! ;)
Flipside :D
-
Yeah, Trebuchets are great...
Try taking down a bomber with a well placed dual trebuchet 10 meters behind him!!! :D ;7
Another fun weapon to use is the kinetic effect one... Morning Star I believe... making bombers and fighters strafing against their will is great! :D
Try modifying and entire destroyer or cruiser only to carry this weapon... :drevil:
-
*waits for someone to mention the dildo bomb
*runs*
-
For secondaries, I too nominate the Treb, but not just for its bomber-downing capabilities. In missions such as "Their Finest Hour", I like to use the treb to knock out beam weapons on cruisers from outside their range.
A close second is the Tornado, which is better than the treb for taking out fighters. A single volley is almost guarenteed to destroy any shivan fighter, and even a Nahema at close range.
For primaries, the Kayser is the obvious choice, with the Maxim a close second.
However, all of these are nothing unless they are mounted properly on the correct fighter. While many people choose the Erinyes with its 8 primaries and better maneuverability, but I prefer the Ares. Its slow, but it's heavily armored. For most missions, I chose this mounted with 4 kaysers and 2 maxim, especialy when going against bombers, its the reverse if there are more cap-ships to engage, then secondary bank 1 with Tornadoes and 2 of trebs, but if the threat is almost exclusively bombers, then I grab as many trebs as I can mount.
Later!
-
I go for Tornado. In later main campaign missions where you fight against bazillion fighters and can fly Ares... It's like some berzerk bloodbath. H, lock, launch, T, lock launch, T, lock, launch... I just love it.
Trebs are also soooo lovely. Shelling the s*it out of cruisers and taking down their beams and m-launchers before going in seeing red and Kaysers blazing is almost better than sex. Almost. Not quite.
As for primaries, I would go for Maxim. Who needs an explanation? :)
-
Ares + Trebs + Harpoons + 4 Prometheus S + 2 Maxim.
Switch guns between fighters/capships, switch missiles at range.
Harpoons because they're more accurate than Tornadoes, Prometheus S because you can fire 'em all day in an Ares without running out of power. Kaysers suck too much juice for my liking.
-
Must be the Tempest. Used from short range, thus one gets a good view of the result.
-
Piranhas (sp) are fun and so are rockeyes and of course the emp.
with some maxims and morning stars
-
Firestorm from Inferno
-
Maxim is pretty fun. feels like you're hitting them with a sledge hammer.
-
I thouroughly enjoyed using EMPs in multiplayer. :drevil:
Other than that, I loved the Avenger in FS1, and the Tempests in FS2. I loooove dumbfires. :D I used to load up every bank on a modified Aeolus with them, and send in bombers on a doomed bombing run.
-
A maxim/Morning star combination.......long range, strafe and watch your ship shake like its dancing to some rock tune
-
Harpoon + Trebuchet + Kayser on Ares/Erinyes.
You cannot stop them.
-
I like the disruptor missle in Freespace 1 those were fun. Disableing cap ships, fighters, and bombers, now get the Port, arm a disruptor missle with some maxims and morning stars.... you know what happens next.
-
I liked how a ship could be temporarily immobilized by them :)
-
Bash them with some Helios  no wait... cross Port with Inferno arm disruptor with those new bomb I hear of and grab some popcorn.
-
Hit them with a disruptor THEN a helios :D
I quite liking the mission where you have to test the Oberon from the Pegasi with double Morning Stars :D You can have so much fun shooting them and watching those low mass ships fly off into the distance :D
Of course yu can't win the mission that way :D
-
I gotta say, the first time I was assigned Hornet swarmers in FS1 was the most satisfying weapon experience. I'm a big Robotech/Macross fan and the sight of 8 swarming missiles screaming out of the dual missile bays on my Herc was just plain cool.
Then most of them missed. :p
In FS2, the Trebuchet was my fav, declawing Shivan destroyers from afar was good fun.
-
EMP in multiplayer. Way back in the day, I popped into a match, and let a couple off.
The cursing and pleading for me to stop doing it was hilarious :D
-
Dual Harpoons; Lock on Mara - Fox-2 - BOOM
(or is it fox someothernumber?)
-
Fox-2 is for Sidewinders. I forget what it is for AMRAAMS.
-
oh, and tags are fun, too. poor guy has no idea what's going on. he's hit by a small, weak missile, then suddenly gets pounded by six AAA beams:D
-
*bump* *hides*
I'd have to nominate the Flail/Morning Star. Not much damage, but coupled with a Prometheus (or Maxim), it sure gives the hit an extra kick, so to speak.
As for missiles, I'm divided between Trebs and TAGs. Trebs are a lot of fun to use on ANYTHING (even SF Dragons, the pesky things), but once a TAG straps itself onto a target, 6 AAAfs are your friends. :D
-
Tempests are awesome, I took out a Fenris in one pass without slowing down, with just Tempests. Of course it was only a Fenris, but still. Harpoons are great too. I like charging towards a Shivan fighter at top speed and launching the missiles and turning away at the last second, then hearing it explode behind me. :D
-
The next choice is the cluster babies  Send swarms of those without lock
-
Ooooh... Tornadoes and Harpoons are a tie in my mind, having full banks of those mounted on a Herc 2 (can anyone say huge payload?) in the middle of a dogfight is pretty funny. However, words really cannot describe the satisfaction I felt using Phoenix Vs in FS1. Playing Insane, the only way to kill a Dragon in a reasonable amount of time was to punch the Dragon straight in the face with a Phoenix, since as soon as you got behind them they would start jinking like crazy. No ship could match them for speed and missiles were left in the dust by their afterburner, so you only had one chance to take them down. But boy, I've gotta tell you, it's the most beautiful sight to see the missile slam into that Shivan and send it spinning into a ball of flame and shrapnel. Hell yeah. :D
-
Maxim. Takes out anti-fighter turrets with ease.
-
Okay, okay, I've got it.
Back in the old PXO days...
When you nail a player with a Helios in ol' Rebel Intercept.
Now thats satisfying!
~Beowulf
-
Oh, that reminded me...
Cleaning Maras with a Cyclops bank - now THAT is fun!
... or is it just masochistic? :doubt:
-
[color=66ff00]The main cannon on the phoenix from starlancer. :nervous:

-
was that the really bright one that charged up?
sorta like a mini beam cannon?

fish in PXO...... nuff said
EDIT: Steak the 'nix couldnt hit ****.......
-
I wuv taking out dragons from long range with Phoenix 5s. :D
-
The Maxim. I love the sound that thing makes, especially when coupled with something else. :D

how about the cluster bomb babies? :D

That reminds me, RI occasionally had the ultimate weapon: debris. Everyone must have seen this in action at some point; if the Alsace is destroyed too quickly, the Corsica comes in, smacks into a large debris chunk (whose damage is magnified due to lag effects) and promptly explodes.
-
I love the Maxim cannon, that thing is just plain sexy.
I also love sending bombs after fighters, to see what they do. It is rather humorous seeing how the AI deals with a Cyclops chasing after it, or better yet, TWO Cyclops bombs chasing after one...
-
Most satisfying weapon to use, eh ? I'd have to say Morning Star on primary - Dance puppet, dance..... MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA  -, and as for secondary, Tornado will always be in my heart. I like to see the explosions of 4+ missiles on a freaking Mara ;)

Yeah...That and it's Gatling Lasers...
-
I must say the most satisfying is pegging fighters/bombers with anti-cap weapons. After the fight is over, and there's a few shivans around to clean up, crank the energy to engines, and do some "intercept" :thepimp:

Heathen! :p Well, I admit, it couldn't track anything except for maybe a Nephilim or a Seraphim, but when it did hit something - like a Dragon head-on - the bang was memorable. :D

Debris kills own :) There's a mission in LM 4 specifically designed to take its horrendous damage into account - funny as hell when it happens :D
-
i still think the targeting lasers owns all.

AMRAAMs are Fox-1. :p
Ermm...I go for anything with large missile banks and a huge load of Harpoons. Just Harpoons. And maybe some Trebuchets if I'm playing bomber intercept.
-
Another great weapon is the GTD Repulse.. kamikazie extrodinaire.
-
The most satisfying weapon? My hull. Full burners, straight into the hostile's face.
While they're still shaking their head and thinking "What the bloody hell was that?" I'm bringing my primaries to bear.
Second place has to go to the big ol' Treb from hell.
-
Trebuchets... from max distance.. quite amusing in the way a little exlposion appears in the distance ala wile. E coyote
-
Primary: Subach/Maxim/Kayser
Secondary: Dual Trebs/Helios
Subach and Kayser because of their fast shield breaking mechanics and the Maxim because of distance and hull damage.
Trebs also because of distance and damage and Helios because it's just plain fun to take out caps with.

That's what i hoped. Unless you regard the Harpoon as an AMRAAM (I've always regarded the Trebuchet as equivalent, simply due to it's range)
-
Cyclops
But only against bombers (not joking).
I also love the Morningstar knocking the target all over the place.
Finally, there's nothing as hilarious as nailing an enemy with an emp missile and taking out all of your own equipment as well.
-
I made a nice, satisfying weapon once. It was an EMP Piranha.
Just perfect for that daily dose of chaos.
-
hehe, reminds me of a bomb i made...
called it the nuke, had realistic values...
so 12km radius, killed everything on impact...
so bye bye colosus and sathanas,... lol
so here u are starting 12kms away fire this bomb that goes so fast it leaves visual range fairly fast lol, then u wait a few minutes, then it finally impacts, spreading this massive shockwave...
i had it hit a ravana in an asteroid field... every rock was destroyed rofl...
wasnt very playable tho... :p and u NEVER wanted to give it to an AI...
hehe, good times, good times...

A nuke like what we have today wouldn't put a dent in a Fenris, let alone a Sathanas.
-
:wtf: why not?
-
:p
Hey, Harbinger was supposed to be five fission warheads, don't know about strength though, bolted together. And it's not that strong. Looks like the guys on V just decided to call everything powerful. MX-50 - from FS1 - has a payload of 16,5 kT, which is quite a lot, would definately course severe damage to cruisers, let alone a fighter. And in the gameplay you can pump scores of them into a lonely Anubis.
A modern heavy nuke would tear the hull of even a Sathanas into pieces. I guess even Sath wouldn't be able to operate well if it had a huge gaping hole on it's side.
500 Mt nuclear warhead gives 3rd degree burns to people over 130km away and totally devastates area ~50km wide. The ground zero is also quite huge. No installation or starship could withstand such damage. For gameplaying purposes the nukes as such have been replaced with something that has a nice big shockwave and can be called big, clumsy and slow.

Nay, Sparrows are Fox 1. AMRAAMs are Fox 3. Most satisfying weapons would be using Tornado swarm missiles at double salvo mode. Fire 'em off and watch the other guy DANCE!

perhaps in space, the nuke-physics don't apply like in the atmosphere?
-
Nukes in space wouldn't have a shockwave, but any damage resulting from thermal and EM radiation would be instantaneous and pretty much fatal at close range, maybe even farther out. One thing's for sure, if every missile in FS did kiloton level damage at least, there should be flashes.
-
Herc2+2 Kaysers+1 harpoon+1 Tornado.
I just love to pounder away the Mara's with my harpoons and at bombers with my Tornado's.
-
The helios uses a core of anti matter and still fails to kill a sathanas with one hit. Admittedly the yield of an antimatter weapon is almost completely gamma rays but that large an amount should cook the entire crew of a sathanas even if it did very little actual physical damage.
The simple fact is that all the ships in FS1 and FS2 are built out of very tough materials. Most of them could probably withstand a nuke with minimal damage.
-
Or V just made up a few arbitrary facts for their various bombs without really caring whether they made sense or not. :p

Harpoon = AIM120 AMRAAM
Trebuchet = AIM54 Phoenix...
Sidewinder = Rockeye?
And so on...
-
I'd have to say the Subach-HL7 and the Kayser grouped together, along with a Harpoon and a bank of Tempests. Harpoon for damaging shots accurately (double) and Twin Tempests when I drop in behind a fighter or bomber or when I need to take out a weapons on a ship fast. Always works nice. If I can, I would group a Mekuh-HL7 and a Kayser, but chances of doing that in campaign are slim to none.

I'd say
Harpoon = Sidewinder
Trebuchet (as you say)
AMRAAM = uh, Stiletto + Harpoon ??
-
No, the rockeye is much more similar to the sidewinder...
Both are IFF controlled heat seekers and does not require radar lock...
