Title: The Last Samurai
Post by: an0n on January 22, 2004, 10:55:35 pm
It was just.......beautiful.

Words cannot describe how moving, how stunning, how totally amazing this film is.

For the final half-hour of the film I was near tears.

Go and see it at all costs, as many times as possible.

I'm totally and utterly stunned.

The real an0n is.. 'hanging out' with Tom Cruise tonight. I think that's his fill in, davey.

No, that sounds about right, considering what the events are in that last half-hour that he sees as "moving". Not to say that they aren't moving, but it's not your typical "hero's-friend-with-cancer-lying-in-hospital-bed-saying-something-touching" moving.

I agree - awesome movie.

Absolutely incredible movie. An0n is dead on the movie. The end was incredible. Even had my wife moved to tears.

Yes, this is a spoiler! Consider yourselves forewarned.
Spoiler:

As the end approached, I could have sworn that they'd kill Cruise off as well - that'd make it a considerably different ending than most Hollywood movies. Ah well - at least they kept his grevious injuries consistent throughout the ending scenes.

I loved Last Samurai. Top Gun Cruise was pants but the supporting cast were excellent and totally sold me on the story. Certainly a DVD keeper.

It wasn't that good. Beautiful scenery, well acted but not the best film by a longshot.

Though I did like the way Tom Cruise became the best samurai in the world in six months.

Can anyone comment on the fact that the last samurai is a white male?

I mean perhaps that's the point - I havent seen it and don't know much about it - but the Japanese, traditionally big on honor, especially their fighters, should really have a Japanese samurai shouldn't they? Seems a little... wrong to have yet another American as the leader this time around.

The title is not referring to Tom Cruise, but the samurai who captures him and befriends him.

Yea, mik's right. At the end of the movie, you'll notice that he's dressed in American clothing, not as a Samurai or whatever.

Great, great movie. I thought they were gonna kill Cruise but it was a nice suprise happy ending (I thought it was gonna be sad).

EDIT: The only thing that really rubbed me the wrong way in the movie was how Cruise was trapped at an enemy encampment for over a year, with no access to any cutting tools, yet his beard did not grow at ALL during the course of the entire movie.

Got to be really noticable after awhile :)

I thought it was more like six months? You noticed how they said winter is coming and you won't be able to go through the pass until spring.

I enjoyed the film don't get me wrong, moreso than I thought I would but it's certainly not the best film I've ever seen, not by a long shot.

Absolutely brilliant movie. Everything balanced out really well, though Cruise's Force like ability to predict entire battles seemed a little far fetched, though I got the impression that he was more predicting probablilities, learning from the pst etc. etc. Still, awesome film, glad I chose it over Welcome to the Jungle :D

I was pleasently suprised by the movie! I was waiting for something rather bad, but man, was I wrong. It was a great movie, albeit the whole idea that an american would help Japan retain its heritage was a bit well... But I didn't care. The movie was good, and entertaining.

The point of the film was that despite being a race of warriors, the Samurai were the most peaceful of everyone in the film. That guns, politics and money have sucked all the honour out of war. And that honour transcends all race, religion and politics.
