Sorry I have to open another forum, but about DivX how good is it? It's just a question and I just want to know. oh and if Zarax :doubt: post again talking again about WMV (which I also hate) just ban him (At least for a day).

WMV = Weird Mediocre (sp) Video

DivX 5.05 is pretty good

any later DivX development is lots slower with worse(!) results.

DivX pretty much is the best format to store videos there is. Quality wise it's slightly worse than WMV9, but it's got a better compression, it's not windows-only, it's more stable, and (the major advantage) it's not from microsoft :p

DivX = THE way to go if you're looking for good results and size

*SMACK*

Ruining it belongs entirely with the Freelancer development team. Microsoft didn't push them into making the stupidest decision ever in the history of space combat games. That was on the books from the beginning, back when they were developing Starlancer BEFORE they got picked up by Microsoft.

MS had mroe influcence than you think, i dont think it was the dev teams idea to make such a crap game, sure making it pretty, making it easy, removing any depth opens it up to the masses dostn make it good.

Micro$haft

Best to not use m$ formats dont use d3d go open gl and it would be a perfect world.

Yes, continue bashing MS...
Soon you will realize your petty error...
You petty minor corporate trust slaves...
You've gotten so moronic that even the best stuff is considered crap only because it comes from Microsoft...
I would shake hands with IBM sales department if only they weren't working into the worst company ever born...
They are reducing software to a service again, trying to having it bundled with their crap and you still work for them without realizing it...
Fools you are that believes that the laws of economy and market doesn't apply to you...

This most likely will cost me perpetual banning, but i haven't gone without a warning for you...
You may consider MS bad, but you're running into something much worser...

what you on about, generally m$ software can be good but generally its not worth how much htey charge thats y people like me enjoy bashing them, when perfectly good alternatives like open office are around which is only held back by incompatabilities with microsoft office .doc, tho its getting very goood now and works most of the time, they are about to change from .doc to an xml format but instead of adopting already standard xml formats used by open office and others. Well i didnt come to these forums to run around preeching the obvious so i guess ill leave it at that. But something much worse thats quite hard to belive, if people dumped m$ and adopted open source alternatives it would become hard to establish a new monopoly.

about DivX how good

To stay on topic, I would strongly suggest you to look at the following article:
[Test Codec] VP6, RV10, WMV9, DivX 5.1.1, XviD 1.0 ...
http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=64789
(http://jfl1974.free.fr/images/PSNROverall-080104.gif)

The best way to confirm yourself: how good is a specific video format, is to see yourself. :)

WMV (which I also hate)

Also check the small video clip here:
This clip was extracted from a 96minutes DVD compressed to 700MB file with 5.1 Surround Sound Audio.

Please check yourself and comment what bad about it.

Acquire Target : McoreD. Commence Plasma Core Insertion. Beam-Free-All. FIRE!

:welcome:

Welcome to HLP. There are exits to the left and rear. Do not attempt to use them. Under your seat you will find empty beer cans, cookie crumbs, dog eared dungeon Porn mags left by Shrike... oh, and a Flamethrower. Unfortunately, we're out of napalm, so you'll have to bludgeon people to death with them.

In the event of serious conflict, there are plasma rifles in the forward locker, though these can only be opened by an Admin, [V], God, or Hyperintelligent shade of the colour Blue. If, for whatever reason, you find yourself crawling around in the ductwork, there's a better than average chance you'll encounter a Shivan. They're easy to spot with the five legs and all. If you're lucky, it's just Carl, who responds well to food rewards. If not, then at least you die quickly. Be aware that the entrance to the main control room is guarded by subspatial claymore mines.

And yet another Aussie :D. Dunno what's causing it, but there's been an influx of late. Not that I'm complaining.

@MCoreD:

and what do those values mean? Nothing.

The result is what's important. DivX5.1.1 is crap, though ;)

It's not even half as fast as DivX5.02 / 5.05 and looks a lot worse. :)

Actually, I don't know anyone who is shouting the benefits of IBM the way you are with Microsoft. Certainly, the IBM lovers here are rather quiet about it.

Time to go back and look at Microsoft's business strategy. They're the ones who want Office and Windows turned into services that you pay for in terms of time. Or did you somehow miss Bill Gates corporate direction speeches and memos from 1998-2003?

@Lightspeed,
Sorry I didn't explain what's Overall PSNR before. :)
I quoted this from a member who explained it in the above article: Please have a read.
Quote
I'll try to explain the difference between Overall PSNR and Average PSNR as far a I understand it. The average PSNR (first graph) is calculated by the average PSNR values (as the name already says )of the single frames. This means for the final result it doesn't matter how constant the quality of the video is. As an example you can take three frames. Codec A delivers a result of 10dB for the first frame 40dB for the second and 70dB for the third. Codec B delivers 39dB, 40dB and 41dB. The average PSNR for those two codecs will be exactly the same. Nevertheless in "real life" you would certainly prefer the quality of codec B because nobody wants a frame with 10dB in his encode.
Overall PSNR on the other hand takes into account how constant the quality of the video is. But please don't ask for the exact formula of Overall PSNR. It's quite complicated (You can search in the Avisynth forum when you are interested).
So IMHO the Overall PSNR is preferable because it's the aim of the 2pass mode to deliver as constant quality as possible.
I hope that helps.

And yes I do agree with you that the result is the most important. These are actual test results which are done by a member called Sagittaire. He has provided links of those test video clips to download and see yourself as well.
However, if you find DivX 5.02 is better than DivX 5.1.1 that's fine. The newest is not always the best. The best is not the best for everyone.
When I have got some free time, I will spend some time to test myself the difference between the DivX 5.02 codec and DivX 5.1.1.

By the way, did any of you test the quality of the sample video I mentioned next? I got no comment about that yet.

Cheers,
McoreD
