A few of you may remember the GTFg Styx clas frigate I made for TMA and MG. It's appeared in a couple of renders Ashrak has made for MG.
The Styx was only the second thing I ever built and as such was rather blocky and has been described by some as uninteresting. Anyway I decided to remodel it now that I'm a bit better at modelling.

New Styx

And here's a 60 second texture job (with the same textures) to compare the two.

I'm about ready to start work on the surface detailling but I thought it a good idea to get comments on the general shape first.

Love it Kara, but as I was telling you, some asymetry would really make it top-notch (like removing one of those outriding things) ;)
But, anywho, great job!
EDIT: On second thought...you should lengthen it, too ;)

Looking good!
I like the engine concept. Work on the flat faces and you will be well on your way to a beautiful ship.

He's right. Asymmetry would be good here.
He's wrong. You shouldn't remove one of the outriding pods. You should lengthen it along the ships beam so its about 2/3rds to 3/4s the length of that section of hull. ;)
-
Well I had planned to keep the ship pretty much symmetrical but I like Mik's idea of lengthening one of the pods and I may do that :D
I could always introduce some asymmetry though the turreting too. I'm still in two minds about whether or not I should put a big turret on that fin at the bottom. On one hand it would look cool. On the other hand it would massively increase the Styx's firepower and it's already designed as a pretty uber ship anyway :)

w00t for progress!

I don't like the "wings".
-
Now if they were stuffed full of high-yeild anti-cap warheads, and detailed, then they could be cool. Right now they are linear extrusions from the hull, and that isn't so hot. In fact, there are a number of areas that suffer from that construction, though they could be fixed with a little creativity.

looks good
but nose should be longer:D

excellent, but I don't like the wings too

Looks good But I don't like those wings:)

I don;t mind the wings meself. From the top they look kinda ordinary, but from any angle other than that (except, perhaps straight down) They improve the overall look of the ship, IMO. Break it up a bit.
-
It's certainly a nice looking ship. Personally, i reckon it would make a good destroyer or carrier, but the choice is your's.
-
I prefer the original.....just kidding!!
I think it lacks a verticl element, like a short bridge tower on top, especially from the side view. Otherwise
-
could do with some more recessed windows IMO, possible along the central bit of the nose or somewhere, try also adding some asymmetry along the wings as well.
-
Nice ship, but IMO it needs to be less cylidrical, try and break up the smoothness of it, or maybe add some gun towers to the the mid or rear sections to break up the outline.
always wanted to see guntowers on these ships.
Cool model mind!! Gooooood work.

The engine pods are definately staying in one form or another because as Black Wolf said they break up the main body of the model a bit.
I see what you mean about them just looking like simple extrusions though. I think I can change that look a bit either when I start adding some more detail or by remodelling them somewhat.
The only other part of the ship I'm really unhappy with is the central engine block. I feel it's missing something on top but I really can't figure out what. :blah:

A great improvement, IMHO. Top shot of the new version reminds me of an AR. :)
-
It will look even better once I've added some surface detail. :) I'll have to think of a way to improve the engine pods though.
