where can i find an IDE cable that's longer than usual?
cause my server case is massive, and the IDE cables don't even stretch halfway across :-/
-
You may try to make a long one by joining several small ones...
It's tricky and requires a lot of attention but it works fine most of time...
-
yeah but there's no way i'm going to connect an 80 pin IDE cable manually :p :D
do they make little devices like Female/Female IDE cable couplets to connect two IDEs together?
-
The IDE spec says cables aren't supposed to be longer than 40cm but you can get them in lengths longer than that, the round cables especially come in lengths up to 85cm (and maybe even longer). I have 4 of the 85cm rounded IDE cables in my HQ-08 full tower and haven't noticed anything unusual. The only problem with the rounded cables is because they're an "enthusiast" item they're outrageously overpriced.

yes, but they are cool (and alow better air curculation)
-
That's debatable:

(Warning: 3.2 megapixel pic alert!)
With a bit of effort I could make 4 flat cables take up less space in that hole than the 4 rounded ones. I guess it varies with case design.
(And yes, I'm fully aware I need to dust the inside of my computer, I just don't relish the thought of lugging this behemoth out to the shed to use the air compresssor)
-
yeah well mine have to go at leaset 90 CM, :-/
-
Put the server in a vice.
Yes
-
the maximum length is one meter, before it becomes really really slow due to errors. at least with flat cables, maybe the rounded ones are a little better.
get an ide controller card and wire from that ;)

the round ones are sheilded so I would expect them to be a bit better, though , I have no evedence,
also, I need to get SCSI,
wow, they are expensive!
-
www.xoxide.com has some
EDIT: damn, they're sold out...
I have 36" rounded cables from xoxide (UV reactive too, hehe) for my Matrix full tower case, have to be that long to reach the CD/DVD drives. :p
-
I think I'm going to need one of them cold florecent lights, not just becase it looks cool (and for this I already have quite a bit of cool glowyness) but more importantly becase I simply need more light when mucking about in there, I can barely see anything
-
A normal person would just get one of those lamps on the adjustable arms...

Umm, shouldn't the system be powered down when you're working on it? :wtf::blah:
-
yes, but that doesn't mean I can't make a secondary power suply for it
